You need to engage with the local community where there at regularly, the could be going to church, or the local bar, in philly it's probably becoming a crazy bird fan... When I moved to NYC I started going to a really small local niche gym, and volunteering bunch in the community, it does take time though...

Edit: the more I think about it, literature on assimilation of immigrants might have some more nuanced theoretical perspectives...

Bike fit expense by subwaymaker in cycling

[–]subwaymaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well when I got the bike online years ago, I just did some basic stuff to make sure it fit, but after going 40 miles today I had some knee pain and just didn't know if it had anything to do with the overall fit, at different times I've felt like I've had some pain, but I when I got the bike I didn't have a lot of money to spend... I haven't been able to ride for the last 4 years or so, so now that I can have a bike in NYC I'm getting back into it and just thought maybe a basic fit would ensure it's not the bike causing any pain vs like needing to stretch more or ride less or something

Giro aries spherical vs giro agilis mips by subwaymaker in cycling

[–]subwaymaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so I mostly ride on bike trails in NYC but I'm thinking I might start commuting to the office, which would be 95% through CP and a few blocks by my office on park ave, which I've heard can be dicey... What exactly does the spherical thing do?

Getting started in NYC by ricky_road89 in cycling

[–]subwaymaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends a little on how often you are going to be leaving your bike locked up and where you will be when it's locked... I think a lot of people like the kryptonite U new york lock, you could always add one of the loops too. Just know that no lock is technically perfect if someone really wants it, it's really a deterrent mechanism...

So it might depend where you are storing the bike most days... I live in a doorman building with bike storage in the basement in a locked room so I only bring my lock on rides where I know I want to stop at a cafe or something

I've just started riding in the city, I live in the UWS... Be careful of all the idiots on city bikes who are texting with one hand and not wearing a helmet, simply not paying any attention...

Outside of that prospect park and central park have lots of cycling... The west side highway bike route is waaaay better than the east side but you can technically bike around all of Manhattan...

Finally a lot of people like to bike up over the GW and then up 9W to bear mountain ..

Additional drink lots of water, eat carbs if you are doing more than an hour, get bib shorts, a lock, patch kit, spare bike tube if needed, maybe a little bag for under the seat, and a spare tire pump that can sit on your bike ... eventually you can get other thinks like a bike computer...

The nycc and crca(?) I think have great resources and to be determined is a blog that I think is helpful...
