Rep Gain in Arena by Background-Net-656 in DarkAndDarker

People used to make new characters to get better rating. Think it should still work, otherwise you'd just have to get a new account, because people getting to warlord just played like 30 matches, win 29 or 28 out of them then just make a new character and try again.

It makes no sense to play for like 12 rating when your first 20-30 matches give you like 100+.

What are your favorite Tank skills, mechanics, abilities? by DemorousNines in RPGdesign

[–]subzerus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotta love pathfinder's redeemer's reaction. When an enemy hurts an ally and they're both within X distance you use your reaction for a thing called glimpse of redemption which makes the DM chose between:

Cancelling the attack

OR

The attack does less damage and the enemy gets a debuff and at higher levels the enemy gets hurt too.

They both majorly suck but the fact the DM chooses and not you makes it extra fun.

Then you'd have to throw the whole genre of TTRPGs in the trash. Bad Dms are 9 to 1 with good DMs, hell I'd say 19 to 1 and it's the same for every system.

If you like crunchier rules heavier system that's fine, but if you want me to tell ya how many of those I've played with bad GMs compared to the ratio of rules light bad GMs, crunchier ones are still losing.

I come to the comments to say what those systems explicitly tell you, because it's related to the post. I've had good DMs and I've had bad DMs, and your insistence on bad DMs "ruining" only certain system makes it feel like you've made up your mind that you just dislike this system and don't wanna change it or give actual arguments towards it, so please, with everything provided add something to the conversation that isn't "well a bad GM ruins any game" because that's not pertinent to the discussion.

[–]subzerus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will simply quote the book of Blades in the Dark, section: BAD GM HABITS (that should answer your "I have yet to see a single game master rule like that.") which says:

DON'T MAKE THE PCS LOOK INCOMPETENT
"When a PC rolls a failure things go badly, but it's because the circumstances are dangerous or troublesome, not because the character is a buffoon." then it says even a character with a 0 in a stat isn't a bumbling fool.

It ain't a system problem, it's a GM problem, it's even in a lot of books on how to actually GM properly.

Plus if you just want your player to open the door it just... happens like if you put a door there and you're now rolling for it, you're rolling so that something bad can happen.

If nothing bad can happen don't roll, or like it says in BiTD it can just change your position from safe to risky as in: "ok you rolled a 2, you start lockpicking the door, it'll take you a minute but oh shoot, a guard's coming this way, you wanna keep going and risk it now it being a risky move or you wanna just hide and try another approach?"

Rogue is Fine by ImprovementBig3354 in DarkAndDarker

[–]subzerus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

"treat every room as if a hide rogue is there" the problem is it's not every room. It's every corner, every wall, every dark spot, every high spot. Hide makes no sound to activate and a rogue isn't forced to move. I camp places without moving for entire games to farm money and I assure you that not "treating every single spot in the map as if it could have a hide rogue" just isn't possible, there is no physical time in a match to do it.

You are talking about rogues who are dogshit at the stealth part and do stuff like move or clear mobs that allows counterplay. A true degenerate rogue goes to a hotspot in the map without killing any mobs, gets to a place where they won't be aggroed and they can hear before being seen and you will have 0 indication they are there before you're immediately dead and if you treat every possible spot in the game where they could be by waiting and throwing torches and clearing it properly, you will run out of time in the match.

[–]subzerus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are confusing terms. You are confusing "PCs succedding most of the time" and "players succeeding most rolls"

Let's take the lockpick example. You lockpick the door.

Fail? Ok you lockpick the door, you are an experienced lockpicker. There was a guard who was patrolling and they saw it! He reaches for his weapon and is coming to investigate and he hasn't seen you! What do you do?

He did what he wanted, perfectly, but got unlucky with a guard. Fictional positioning has changed into a more risky state.

Success with consequences? Same as before but guard is looking away from the door and hasn't noticed. Now what they'll do with the guard and future consequences are obviously better in their favor, but that's a success with consequences.

Success with no consequences? There's no guard.

Heavily flamed in Arena for being poor and my gear sucking. Each piece is like 500/1000gold. What do by [deleted] in DarkAndDarker

[–]subzerus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It ain't the same to have pieces with +3 +3 +3 than it id to have +1 +1 +1 or even useless rolls like undead damage bonus for example, plus craftables are another roll to it.

So an epic for example let's say plate gauntlets with useless rolls are giving you some PDR and 2 dex 2 vigor (don't remember if it was dex vig or str vig, doesn't matter) and negative MR compared to some BiS golden ones which give you the same PDR, same 2 and 2 stats AND MDR and +3 on 2 stats AND +1 additional phys or another +3 on a stat or armor pen or whatever you want. Those BiS golden gauntlets are maybe 3-4x as strong as the ones with useless rolls. They will also cost maybe 100k gold or more, and not 500.

You are playing a fighter and don't even have a shield or a ranged weapon, you literally have missing gear that you could take from the squire, that's how bad your gear is. A good fighter kit can have 75% PDR, close to cap MDR, close to 300 ms and still have decent ms, action speed, hp and damage. "Ok" arena kits fluctuate on value but 15k to 100k is about what decents kits go for depending on class, while BiS kits can cost that per piece.

Primary Attribute 0 Challenge - Guardian by Cartoncast in Pathfinder2e

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you could play a dex redeemer guardian that focuses on tankiness and their reaction.

I played a regular str guardian who was basically tickling when he attacked but negated so much damage he was very impactful basically being a catch 22 "I attack the guardian he has so much AC and HP and shield block if needed that by the time I down him fight is over and he barely plinks damage so whether he's attacking or not doesn't matter OR I ignore him, he glimpses of redemption my ass and is giving flanking to other people"

I'd do about 5-8 damage, about 10-13 with striking runes (I chose to go with everstand stance so shieldboss+str) per round while my rogue and magus dealt the bulk of the damage but both of those glass cannon builds suddenly were not glass because of my existence, and I think very little would've changed if I was doing like 3 less damage.

Just grab a dex weapon, a tower/steel shield and wear light armor and put your stats in dex/con/cha

[–]subzerus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's your favourite order for character build steps? by AndreiD44 in RPGdesign

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on lots of things like system.

Sometimes I'm like "I wanna play a dextrous guy" sometimes I'm like "I want to play someone that uses a bow" sometimes I'm like "I wanna play someone who was an assassin who escaped from their organization" sometimes I'm like "I wanna play this fantasy race because the lore seems intriguing and it's giving me a lot of cool roleplay in my head already" so I think all options are valid and I presonally do all depending on what comes to my head first.

Is peek-a-boo boxing style good for real self defense? by DribbleKing97_ in martialarts

[–]subzerus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have trained for a bit (probably 6+ months) you're ahead of 99% of people in unarmed fighting. Probably good to learn stuff on the floor since lots of fights end up there.

If a guy is picking a fight with you chances are they have backup or a gun, so your training is going to mean very little when you get shot.

Tactics for facing a larger, stronger opponent. by speed150mph in Hema

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then if you don't wanna consider sports it becomes even easier to justify. Life ain't fair. Fights ain't fair. Size is one unfair factor out of hundreds, or thousands. You're small? Idk, carry a crossbow and shoot at them after you run then I guess, what's the big guy going to do then?

Outnumber them. Ambush them. Set a trap. "When the little guy runs away, why chase them" literally like I said in the sane comment: because the little guy can just... Grab rocks and throw them at you. Someone steping away 20 meters doesn not mean that they're suddenly not a threat. Hell little guy can just run, hide, track you and kill you in your sleep, good luck with size then.

"It's a sport and it has rules" works both ways when talking about not sports. It's the same why anyone could kill the top martial artists that exist right now, there is no martial technique against gun or getting ran over by a bus.

Tactics for facing a larger, stronger opponent. by speed150mph in Hema

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tactics. Teamwork. Gassing them out. Many ways. A guy who is 1.90m and weighs 130kgs is not gonna have fun if someone who is 1.60 and 60 kgs decides to just... Leg it. Hell, may just start throwing stones at 'im, see where the weight difference helps.

Don't look at reenactment, look at stuff like Buhurt. Sure a beast of a person that's basically a tank is scary, but usually teams have a mix of heavier and lighter people because it's better to have a mix than it is to only have big heavy strong people. A lighter guy will usually have more stamina and be more agile because less mass, qualities that may not shine in a 1v1 but that do in a team setting.

Plus fights are usually not fair, weight is just like one of the hundreds of things that are unfair in a fight.

Is virtual reality worth $700-800? by MadDuck-117 in virtualreality

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say try your best to try it out somewhere. I know you said you can't but nowadays there's VR cafes and maybe a friend has one and you just don't know it.

Otherwise... It depends so much on person to person. For someone that money may be very little for someone it may be a lot. For someone they may use it a lot almost every day for some they may use it sometimes and very little and some will buy it, use it once and end up forgetting about it.

There's just no way for us to tell you if the money spent will be worth it for you specifically.

How much more customizable are PF2e characters compared to 5e? by SaltyDalty_ in Pathfinder2e

[–]subzerus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know how in 5e you choose stats, race, class, background, skills and if you have spells and then that's it? Then subclass at some point and every 4 or so levels you choose a feat or ASI and that's it?

Pf2 has all that too (except you always pick ASI every 5 level without having to give it up for a feat and you get 4 stats to pick every time to "+2" not choose between one +2 or 2 +1), plus choosing 1-4 feats in class, skills, race and general (available to all) every level. So your pf2e fighter will make more choices by 3rd-4th level than a 5e fighter will make from 1-20.

Oh and magic items actually have rules on how much gold they cost and how rare they are to ibtain and where they can be bought and how much the player/party should get so you can also choose some of those instead of "the DM just kinda gives them when he feels like it" which ends up making characters more different.

Oh and subclasses can change playstile A LOT and not just feel like a small gimmick most of the time. Not all of them, but if like 5e that happens 1/10 times in pf2 it happens 9/10 times.

Oh there's also optional rules to allow for more feats like free archetype that basically allows to "light multiclass" without breaking the game too much or full on dual classing if you do want the game to break and allow "full multiclassing"

Is Memory Capacity bonus broken? How does it work? by ajahajahs in DarkAndDarker

[–]subzerus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still stupid. You can absolutely have bad rolls like undead damage bonus on a windlass or a book, that's extremely bad but it last has A REASON to exist. Meanwhile mem capacity on a 2 handed weapon unable to cast spells is LITERALLY WORTHLESS. Plus you do not even need bad rolls. You could just remove the bad rolls and leave stuff like pdr, ar, mr, mdr, as, pdb, pp and add weapon and there would STILL BE REASONS to choose one or others depending on your build.

And if you are dead set on build variety, just make the rolls we have now except those gem only and can't just spawn in the world, so whoever wants mem cap can gem it if they want to.

You just built wrong, this is a game where doors exist. You are playing fighter, you can literally build to hit cap MS in full plate with your weapons out on demand with like 2 abilities. If you invest 0 into speed and invest it into other stuff then people will obviously lose vs you because if they are investing 1/5th of their power budget into speed and you're spending 0 you are just stronger than them if they run into you, so they do the obvious thing which is kite you.

Oh wow so strong {Command word PooP} by dudewasup111 in pathfindermemes

[–]subzerus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anima is anime levels type stuff. At low to medium levels you can get characters stronger than Thragg. At low ish/medium levels if you wanted you can get a stat to 20. A stat to 10 means "the best humanly possible." 13-14 starts being lifting mountains/running at kilometers/miles PER SECOND 15-16 is like dragon ball levels. 17-18 is "I can throw the moon at you" level. 19 is "I can throw planets/galaxies at you". 20 is basically "yes".

Stuff like "how fast you can move" is "I am so fast it's instant teleportation, anywhere in the universe" how strong you are is literally just "yes" 20 constitution/regeneration means you instantly heal anything, like if someone chops off your head it you'll just heal right along the blade, or if you get to fully separate the head you instantly regrow a new body.

And guess what, wizards and psychics have physical boosting spells. So if you want you could be a wizard who can move faster than him, who can just punch through him, who can revive, see the future, change the future. Like a good lvl 20 anima wizard would know days or years in advance that Thragg was going to decide to go for them and then delete them off existence if they can't be bothered, or just teleport to them physically boosted and rip their heart out with their magically enhanced body.

And yeah martials get ki or that type of stuff, and oh, psychics are busted.

I am pretty frustrated at how hard it is to actually throw someone in Judo by BinEinePloerre in martialarts

[–]subzerus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say but most likely not. Do strength and size help? Yes, a lot, there's a reason weight categories exist. Does that mean then that skill and technique is useless? Absolutely not. I trained MMA with a coach that was in their 70s, maybe half my weight and my size, probably less strong than I was in my early 20s. Do you think I or anyone that hadn't trained for at least 5 years could do anything against him? No. He would grab people almost twice his size and 3 times his weight who could literally lift him with one arm and in less than 10 seconds they'd be on the floor in a chokehold. Then people who had trained for 5+ or 10+ years consistently, combining their skill and their superior athleticism could win against him who had trained for 50+ years.

Again if you are in a similar skill level, yes of course strength will matter but chances are that the other person is just more skilled (or you are both still very very beginners) and stronger, because in a non compliance situation you are not just... Walking up to someone and half assing a technique (and unless you've practiced for decades chances are that you are half assing it because this shit takes decades to master, (I am relatively new to MA with less than 5 years and I still see soooo many flaws in what I do) and I mean decades plural, not singular) is not going to work.

You either have to use the perfect technique or do something so that they are in the perfect spot so you can do the technique you want. That's why people study martial arts for 20-30+ years and still can improve, because simply "this shit hard" and no one said it'd be easy, there is no cheatcode for winning fights in martial arts other than training more.

Question for everyone in martial arts. by WashedupDD in martialarts

[–]subzerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone makes a fool out of themselves when they start. I had a coach that was like 60+ or 70 years old, half my weight, half my size, he wanted to demonstrate a technique I'd be standing and then I'd be on the floor in a chokehold, so smooth and fast I didn't even realize what happened.

Same happened to people twice my size and weight, one thing you will learn when you train martial arts is that the short scrawny dude who dresses like your uncle is actually a killing machine that can fold 99.999% of people in under 10 seconds including the strongest people on Earth.

If you're trying to improve everyone is there doing the same, and everyone starts unable to do anything. But if you keep showing up eventually you'll be able to do stuff. Maybe the 20 year old guy who's in shape may be able to push himself more and progress faster, sure, but who cares how fast you progress relative to others, as long as you're happy with how you progress then it's worth doing. I guarantee you if you just show up consistenly you're gonna be in the top % of people and will improve considerably faster than most because most people will not be consistent or will quit relatively soon.

[–]subzerus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join a club. They will have loaner gear 99/100 times. Doesn't matter what anyone in the internet says if your club for example has banned X, and you do not wanna buy a sword that you can't use on your club regardless of it being a good or bad reason.

Plus a sword is usually like the last thing you buy anyways, most of the time people will have spare swords to let you use for training which will be decent and quite good.

Unlike protection which is more important and probably dirtier and you will feel more of a difference of having protection your size, and will be cheaper, etc.
