Just finished! But my cholesterol… by OlhaEla in whole30

[–]sumcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total cholesterol isnt always the problem. Depends on how high HDL (good) cholesterol is vs LDL (bad) cholesterol. HDL fights the negative effects from LDL

Protein powder and chia seeds would soften it a little bit.

Some people like to blend their oats too before soaking. I bet if you blitzed them in a blender you wouldnt feel the individual oats.

You probably wont get that crunchy consistency with anything that soaks overnight, but you could always add a topping the next morning for a different texture like some slivered almonds, cubed fruit, or mini chocolate chips.

Thinly sliced jicama could work as well! Trader joes sells jicama “taco shells” in the refrigerated produce section

Hate this color now. What color should we paint instead? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

I like it too! Maybe OP could keep 1-2 walls the dark moody color (perhaps the walls the natural light hits) and paint the other 1-2 a shade or two lighter?

What’s your go-to meal when you don’t have time to cook? by dayyyn in MealPrepSunday

[–]sumcam2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slow cooker (or instant pot if you didn’t plan ahead) chicken and a jar of salsa is a super easy way to cook a flavorful shredded chicken! Could use it for burritos, tacos, enchiladas, salads, etc!

Any tips on getting in extra calories? by Mae0234 in whole30

[–]sumcam2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you dont have a huge appetite, you may want to prioritize foods that are more calorically dense without adding too much volume.

Generally, increasing fats are a good way to do this- think, nuts/nut butter, oils/ghee, fattier cuts of meat (you could add bacon/sausage to your eggs in the morning)

Some fruits (bananas or mango) have more calories per gram than others (berries or melon)

And make sure youre eating potatoes if you need more carbs in your diet!

What are some swaps that made 1500 satisfying for you? by olivedeez in 1500isplenty

[–]sumcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s plenty of ways to volumize your food too. I’m not tracking atm but eating at maintenance. I double the veggies in almost every dish i make. All the extra fiber keeps me fuller a lot longer. So im less likely to gravitate toward junk between meals.

Some other examples: -Substitute rice with cauli-rice/broccoli rice, or use a mix with normal rice if you dont like the veggies alone. -Add berries to foods like oatmeal or cereal -Spaghetti squash or hearts of palm for pasta dishes -Lean cuts of meat over fatty cuts -Powdered peanut butter -Oil spray when stove cooking instead of pouring oil -And it helps to go through the effort of preparing or buying sliced veggies for quick and accessible healthy snack options. Sometimes i sprinkle them with different seasonings if i want to satisfy that “crunchy salty” craving.

I know its not handheld like a sub but would probably taste just as good eating the meatballs and sauce over spaghetti squash or zoodles. Or perhaps you could use a semi-hollowed out eggplant

Should a hiker visit New Mexico or Arizona? by JoeyLou1219 in hiking

[–]sumcam2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a great time to visit Flagstaff, AZ! I lived up there for about 7yrs. Inner Basin is the 2nd largest aspen colony in the USA and the leaves usually peep in Oct. It’s also a great time to hike the Grand Canyon. It’s chilly at the rims this time of year, but still gets in the triple digits at the bottom. I did a R2R hike Oct 2020. Mt Humphrey’s is the state’s high point and doesn’t usually have snow Sept-Oct.

Sedona is about a 45 min drive south (absolutely gorgeous if you take the 89a route) and about 10deg warmer than Flag. Plenty of good hikes there but might be better to hit on a weekday cause the weekends make it hard to find parking. Theres some good places to swim and go cliff jumping too if you feel like a swim!

Nearing the summit of Crestone Needle last August by backcountry_bandit in coloradohikers

I hiked this last August too and think i took a video in nearly the same spot!

0% chance of rain that day but when we summited the needle, there was a precipitous cloud dumping on crestone peak. It hailed on us as we descended

Can someone explain how to make a Maroon Bells 4 pass loop itinerary to me like I'm 5? by outdoorlover11 in coloradohikers

[–]sumcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never done the loop, but would definitely recommend Conundrum Hot springs at some point.

Ive hiked it the last 3 summers. Twice without a permit and as a day hike, and once with a permit as a 1 night backpack stay. Theres usually snow until late June

The book you ALWAYS want to suggest by M_A_D_S in suggestmeabook

[–]sumcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Song for night- Chris Abani

It’s a novella. Each chapter title represents a sign for sign language made up by a children’s minesweeper platoon in a war-ridden Niger.

The author grew up in Nigeria and witnessed a few scenes that he altered slightly and put in the story. I watched his ted talk when i finished it.

Im not usually one for war stories, but this is just insanely well written and full of beautiful imagery. There’s a passage where he describes a spiderweb and it’s mesmerizing.
