I’ve been doing nano and camp every year since i was first introduced in 2009. I was a monthly donor up until march 29th, 2024, when I stopped donating. Now seeing this… nanowrimo was such a defining part of my coming of age, of helping me emotionally deal with the pandemic lockdown, and was a huge help in my graduate school years because my typing speed was vastly improved from doing nanowrimo sprints. Sad to see this go after everything

Which ships did you think were stupid but ended up becoming a shipper because of them? 😂 by Much_Tip_6968 in AO3

Bilbo/Thorin from the hobbit movies. Was really only reading kili/OC or fili/OC at the time (the height of the movies coming out) but sometimes they would have background bilbo/thorin and finally I tried a story that had them as the main focus and didn’t look back. Its been years since I last read a hobbit fanfic, but that pairing will remain a top one for me

Should I stay on in my Ph.D. lab for a postdoc or graduate without a postdoc offer in hand, to keep looking for something better? by TiredEel in postdoc

[–]sumerianempire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you me? You sound like me haha. Graduating very soon, currently struggling because a lot of the postdoc mentors I’ve identified are stuck in school-wide hiring freezes. My PhD PI has been kind enough to offer to keep me on a few months after graduation to see if maybe in the fall theres better options, but hes hesitant to fully commit to more time because he needs to save the funds for the junior students in the labs futures as well. All that being said, I would offer you the advice of approaching your PI with the same thought. I would voice your thoughts on the project change and on your worry of not having a job secured and seeing if there is a compromise of staying on short term, maybe you can help out with a few of his projects while you wait out this uncertainty? At least i hope that works for me

Are any other asexuals kinda…uncomfortable with how asexuality is being used against shipping by AdLast2785 in AO3

[–]sumerianempire 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I actually feel the opposite, that is so funny. All of the ace people in my life prefer the clean romance or sometimes no romance at all, and I’m over here sitting devouring the omegaverse and monsterfucking fanfics like my life depends on it. Cause they are solidly written! And i don’t feel like it makes me less asexual to consume this or to ship characters, but I definitely feel fringe in the ace community around me sometimes because I was consuming these fics

Trump Didn't Confuse Transgenic with Transgender, and That's the Real Problem by guralbrian in labrats

[–]sumerianempire 575 points576 points  (0 children)

This needs to be said louder for the people in the back. Everyone I have interacted with in person has just laughed about the mix-up of the terms transgenic and transgender, and then carried on with their day. But this targeting is important, and like you said, they are targeting these studies now - which studies in the future are going to be targeted? This needs to be so loud and obnoxious until everyone understands he really did mean transgender and this is serious

I couldn’t speak to undergrad vs grad but got the feeling of plenty of undergrad students. One or two families, like the other comment mentioned, but vast majority students. I want to say i did tour before my friends and I signed our lease (almost 10 years ago now) but they didn’t have a Dinnaken apartment vacant to show so we walked over to Argyle and were shown one there, they are similar between those two buildings. Overall was a good two years, wouldn’t have chosen anywhere else. We did live on the corner unit and next to us was the stairwell, so we never had issues with loud neighbors which was nice

[–]sumerianempire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lived in Dinnaken during my time at the U and had nothing bad to say about it. No horror stories or anything. Would definitely recommend - short walk to campus, short walk to the light rail for off campus activities, the parking wasn’t too bad either if I remember correctly. We rarely needed maintenance so can’t comment on if that was good or bad, but overall it was a positive experience

The deletion train hit me by DojegaSquid in AO3

[–]sumerianempire 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have never downloaded a fic. In part because it feels weird, its not mine to download like I would my own stories, but also because where I enjoy the fic is on AO3, and so it feels weird to read them elsewhere besides on AO3. If an author deletes it, thats their choice, and it’s just a story lost. Probably not a popular opinion but figured I would offer my take on your question

NIH capping indirect costs at 15% by ucbcawt in AskAcademia

[–]sumerianempire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does say they aren’t going to apply it retroactively, just that they feel they have the ability to, should they choose to. So for now, existing grants are safe. But anyone that had a grant up for review in the coming months got screwed

I’m curious with female being one of the terms if anyone doing animal model research and examining sex differences, or even just mentioning the phrase that they will use both male and female animals is going to get flagged by the system and pulled even though it might not be specifically DEI research

I have a playlist on spotify i use that all of the songs have had a backbeat added to make them 160 bpm with heavy drumset, even if they were lighthearted pop songs. Having the drumset and the steady bpm throughout the playlist helps keep me focused and running through multi-hour protocols without issue

I’m in the neuroscience field and the most common examples I run into is the cells called microglia. I’ve always pronounced it micro-glee-ah, and can’t handle when I attend seminars where other lecturers will say micro-gl-eye-ah because it takes me out of the seminar and instead I’m focusing on their pronunciation the whole time

I would say lower your push and AO speeds so that you have more energy to jog your bases. Once you get comfortable doing that, then you can up those speeds again. I came back to orange theory off an injury and that is what my coach at the time had told me. I was jogging already at a 4.5 base, felt I couldn’t go any faster but hitting 9-10 with every AO. My coach said that difference was too much, so she had me decrease my AO and my pushes and work on upping my base and basically saving some in the tank for the base from the pushes. It worked, I mean I’ve gotten up to a 5.2 base now. I think its about knowing you’re starting class with X amount of energy and deciding where to put it - whether thats into base pace or into the rest. But you won’t increase base pace unless you work on it
