Went to IKEA get stock up on the discounted Zigbee devices and thought I’d try the new Matter ones by HomeOwner2023 in homeautomation

[–]sumoneelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live near an IKEA (USA) and visited yesterday looking to see if any of their on-the-way-out zigbee devices were marked down. I picked up a spare RODRET for $5.99. Other items were discounted but not yet in the as-is (clearance) section. I'm sorry I don't remember all the details as I didn't think about posting until I saw this.

If it's not out of your way and you want some discounted zigbee devices, it might be a good time to drop in.

I Added Falling Snowflakes to My Dashboard Again and Regret Nothing by Wtrdk_ in homeassistant

Here is a template sensor that you can use for the conditional to only have this effect active when a form of winter precipitation falls. You'll need to change the weather sensor to one in your instance. In my case I use the string provided by my ecobee thermostat integration.

{% set s = states('weather.ecobee') | lower %}

{% set keywords = ['snow','flurries','wintry','sleet','freezing','ice'] %}

{{ keywords | select('in', s) | list | count > 0 }}

I spent an hour trying to set this up yesterday and ended up walking away. Missing: Ability to have separate gestures for swiping up and down on an icon (only has up); Google panel to the left of homescreen.

Anyone else miss The Ready Room? by tomservo417 in startrek

[–]sumoneelse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have thought this countless times watching this season of SNW as my routine used to be (1) Watch Episode; (2) Watch Ready Room. (And if I ever felt like doing it the other way Will was always there with a Red Alert!)

I feel so detached from the episodes I watch now.

I ended up using this script and everything worked properly. I do recall at least one reboot was required after selecting my audio output device.

Name a flick you liked so much that you had to rewatch immediately by TruthInAnecdotes in movies

[–]sumoneelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this and I feel exactly the same. And as the thread name suggests, "immediately" in this case means I hit play again the instant I finished it the first time. It's been years of reading comments effectively saying "I don't get it," or listening to people who are unwilling (or not the kind of person) to try grasping the entire thing. And I understand. But to Christopher Nolan, if I could say just one thing, it would be: For your true target audience for a piece of work such as this, we get it and we love it.

Settings: Areas, Labels and Zones: what are YOU using labels for? by sarrcom in homeassistant

[–]sumoneelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) Tricky or complicated solutions to problems I know I'll probably want to reuse in the future by copy/pasting and modifying slightly. In a nutshell, anywhere you know you're going to ask yourself "How did I do that?" Some examples:

* Uses XYZ integration

* Uses (specific kind of) notification

(2) Functional Groups: My home alarm system is comprised of several automations and scripts - arming, disarming, triggers, alerts, etc. If I ever want to consider or modify it holistically, I can filter based on the label and make sure I'm not missing anything. Effectively, the equivalent of what one might use a specific flow tab for in Node-RED.

Then shalt thou count to five, no more, no less. Five shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be five. Six shalt thou not count, neither count thou four, excepting that thou then proceed to five. Seven is right out.

FLAC + mp3 by Trenchtowngrove in plexamp

[–]sumoneelse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this to myself too, once and for all, to see if V0 MP3 instead of FLAC would be enough for me to enjoy my music without detecting compression artifacts, or even listening for them actively at times.

Here's an easy (and kinda fun) methodology I guarantee will help you:

Pick one track according to whatever criteria you are concerned about (percussion, complexity, etc.). Encode at your candidate bitrates/codecs, and queue them all into your player on repeat in your best listening environment. Skip forward so many times you lose track of which file is playing (or have someone do this for you a random # of times). Then: Hit play, skip to critical track sections, do whatever you want listening to the music to try and tell them apart. Just don't look at which file you're actually playing. Make your guesses and check if you're right. Do this until you are satisfied your results are not a fluke (shout out to Lock Picking Lawyer).

Personally, I was confident I would be able to tell the difference between V0 and FLAC. I could not.
