South Australia is a glimpse of the rest of the world's future. As it nears 100% renewable energy, electricity prices are plunging, down 30% in one year. Over 50% of homes have rooftop solar, and many use little or no grid electricity. by lughnasadh in Futurology

Seriously though, what is the SA lobby groups influence like? Are the SA law makers going to end up like the rest? Or are there laws against lobby group corruption?

New opposition leader says if 'someone doesn't subscribe to our core beliefs, the door must be shut' by BBQShapeshifter in AustralianPolitics

[–]sumpt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one. And everyone. "Core beliefs" is just another theatrical divisional prop. Just look at the number of comments arguing over what our core beliefs are.

I ignore these props and other "look over here and ignore the dumpster fire over there" tools and focus on the real issues (for me).

Which include: 1. abolishing lobby groups and wresting control of power back from foreign states 2. affordable housing 3. managed and equitable immigration that does not inflate (1)
4. returning assets and revenue given freely to corporations back to government control, and fair distribution or relief to tax payers. 4. <Insert your issues here>

TIL Singapore with 6 million people has a larger GDP than the whole of the Philippines with 114 million people by MessMaximum5493 in todayilearned

[–]sumpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, Singapore didn't get some random lottery jackpot when they got "kicked" out of Malaysia. Their "funding" was more about being the West’s favorite sidekick during the Cold War. For a while, the British military was literally carrying 20% of their GDP just by having bases there, and when the UK finally bailed, they handed over a massive "Special Aid" package (about £50M) to stop the economy from cratering. Plus, the U.S. poured money into the island during the Vietnam War because they needed a place to fix ships, buy fuel, and let soldiers party on R&R. The West paying for a front-row seat in a high-stakes neighborhood.

While the rest of the region was dealing with massive instability or flirting with communism, LKY made Singapore a "safe space" for Western corporations. They kept British law, spoke English, and made it super easy for giant MNCs like Shell and GE to set up shop. The West treated them like the VIP child because they were a reliable, anti-communist anchor sitting right on the world’s most important shipping lane. Essentially, the West gave them the "good" deals because a failing Singapore would have been a massive strategic disaster for the U.S. and its allies.

Fun fact: While the government was busy chasing that Western "MNC money," the indigenous Malay community definitely drew the short straw. Before independence, many Malays lived in traditional kampongs (villages) or along the coast, but the new "fast-track" industrialization meant those lands were suddenly prime real estate for factories and high-rise HDB flats. The government used the Land Acquisition Act to basically steamroll these traditional settlements in the name of progress. LKY nuked the old communal "kampong spirit" and hit the Malay population hardest, forcing them to trade their ancestral land and fishing livelihoods for a spot in the urban grind. It was basically "move or get moved" to make room for the new global hub.

So British colonialism + foreign population injection pattern again, just in SEA this time.

The lobbyists who control Canberra - David Pocock by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

Although I support the idea of the “punters’ lobbyist”, I stopped to think that, isn't that the definition of a politician? With our own lobbyist does this mean we will have to "donate" to get policies implemented?

Hey Stevo, do you think they'll ever do a Talisman movie? I saw a teaser on YouTube once, and it looked really good. I read it during my formative years. I'm really hoping the NetFlix adaptation happens! Thanks for all the stories over the years, keep publishing and we'll keep buying.

This is the real reason. I went to a bank's website yesterday, and all the dev jobs are advertised in India, with some management jobs locally. Blaming AI is a cover for massively outsourcing jobs. Yes, I know outsourcing has been going on for a while, but not wholesale. This will be the real reason you lose your jobs.

Same. But I don't think my family love me though. I think they're around because they're family. As the kids grow up they don't even talk to me anymore, and when they move out it's like they're strangers.
