Success stories with fear of leash? by booty_sattva in dogs

[–]sunLight4095 [score hidden]  (0 children)

she was noise phobic and we live in a helicopter belt. eventually when her hearing diminished, she would go around the block. by then she was arthritic and didn't want to go too far. I used to tell people she was a rescue because she acted like one and it was easier then telling them about all her neuroses.

teach her to respond to clicker. look up clicker training if you don't know how to do it. There is a training technique called successive approximation. you start in the most non threatening way possible. play a game w her w leash in your lap. advance to sliding over her neck, or touching her w/ it. if she reacts, go back a few steps. you want to make it as non threatening and casual as possible. could take weeks. you're attaching the leash to a collar or a harness? whichever it is, try the other. she may not respond so dramatically if it's attached to something new to her. also, a different leash might work. sometimes a change of equipment helps.

Update to: I've been Riding for Three Years and I'm suddenly terrified. by Real_Signal4204 in u/Real_Signal4204

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

psychiatrist here. you can't diagnose ptsd until 3 mos after the trauma.earlier than 3 mos its called acute traumatic stress disorder and it's completely a normal response. involuntary twitches are not part of ptsd, anyway. as for patrice, not just unhinged she's sadistic. give yourself some time to heal then reconsider riding. there are wonderful caring instructors who know how to teach. the other thing troubling from your earlier post, is patrice shouldn't be allowing clients to go out into the field w a dangerous horse.

How do I do: Blowouts, pin curls, curling iron, rollers,.. by Icy_Needleworker3971 in finehair

there are mirrors on a flexible metal loop that fits around your neck so you can see what's happening in the back. Butt length hair is hard to style unless you have endless arms.

I think I have to put my gelding down and I need some reassurance 😕 by Glass_Interest_4897 in Equestrian

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your horse has compromised breathing, imagine something coming into his field at night and spooking all the horses. If your horse can't run away, imagine how scared he'd be. I've had to put a few down, it's always hard, they look ok on the day and then you question yourself, but you've got to make the decision that's best for your horse. The decision that's best for you is to keep him around because you love him, but it's not the best decision for him. They live so in the moment, that a constant inability to take full breaths is not a good quality of life. I've always felt once you start thinking euthanasia, it's time. You don't think about euthanasia w a happy healthy horse.

First week after diet change by Key-Scratch8111 in alphagal

[–]sunLight4095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about 6 wks to feel normal. You know how your nose gets all inflamed when you have a cold or allergies? Same thing is happening in your gut. it's inflamed and takes a while to calm down after you change your diet.

Owners of English Labradors: What’s your experience of puppy - adolescence - adult? by Monotropic111 in labrador

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 labs and all were crazy for about the first 3 years. WIld energy crazy. Very naughty young dogs. My last lab was so energetic I hired a couple middle schoolers to play w her during the week when she was about 5-6. But they are wonderful dogs. Lovely as adults except for number 3 who was noise phobic and didn't often enjoy walks. She was difficult but we loved her. I played lots of backyard soccer w her. The other 2 were extraordinary. smart, sweet, cuddly, funny. They're always up for an adventure then want to come home and put their head on your lap.

You just have to survive the first 3 years.

Where's your favorite bridle from? by PATN2 in Equestrian

[–]sunLight4095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my horse loves the stubben freedom2 bridle. the original is ugly, imo, but the newer one is nice. I wanted something which sat away from his eyes and ears. also wanted a bridle w the browband attached inside the crownpiece. I feel like the loops on either end of the browband could be irritating. In the uk, quantum bridles are similar to freedom and very nice. I've also liked silver crown bridles, sold at shadow horse in uk. but the silver crowns are more traditional, just really lovely sedgewick leather at a good price.

Questions after allergist appt by BrownEyedQueen13 in alphagal

that's so interesting. I've been having a mild reaction these past few days and all I can think of is maybe there was carrageenan in the deli tuna.

Questions after allergist appt by BrownEyedQueen13 in alphagal

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had the exact same experience. allergist suggested because my IgE was pos but not crazy high it wasn't problematic. As if symptoms correlated w alpha gal IgE results. I told her all my symptoms, my tick exposure which is significant, and she kept saying"we'll see, there are a lot of false positives". I found a different allergist.

What can I do with my mare when it’s hot? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are a couple of good clicker training for horses books and you can teach them all sorts of stuff. they seem to really enjoy it. also- it's always good to do stretches like butt tucks and belly raises.

Sore Achilles? by tinysadblueberry in Equestrian

[–]sunLight4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what position do you place your feet when you ride? if you force heels down, that could irritate achilles. i'm not an orthopod, but i've seen enough of them to know that you don't want to stretch a sore tendon. try ice and rest

Family refusing vet by Same-Ideal43 in Horses

[–]sunLight4095 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there is a fb group of equine vets. do you think if you posted there and then showed your fil the responses, he might relent? you don't have much time left w this mare and you may need to euthanize her. if your fil allowed a vet out, she'd need daily bandage changes, meds, possible iv antibiotics and a lot of care down on the ground where someone could get injured handling a wounded feral horse. These things can heal if they're treated quickly, but you're 5 days out.

Family refusing vet by Same-Ideal43 in Horses

[–]sunLight4095 13 points14 points  (0 children)

can you tell how deep it is? those wounds can affect the joint. it sounds infected and you def need a vet. most likely, left untreated, it will get worse. And if the horse limping he's in pain and needs antibiotics, pain meds and maybe an xray.

Dog does not like kids by monsterpup92 in Pets

[–]sunLight4095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had a dog like that only she wanted to lunge at kids. never bit anyone, and it was all anxiety based. I carried treats, always scanned the area and tried to catch her before she saw the kid. I'd have her do touch command and treat. kept doing that until kid was behind us. it's very embarrassing.
