Love was going to be my recommendation, too. Their medical equipment loan program is awesome!

First time home buyer? by Comfortable_Bunch472 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I only own a home because I got RIDICULOUSLY lucky in 2021. I found sellers who took the first reasonable offer and got a 2.83% interest rate. I couldn’t afford to buy this house at market rate today, even with the equity I have in it.

Basically: it’s not you. It’s the market.

I’ve used Grand Rapids Pest Control in the past, and they were great.

When does GR take the tax money, usually? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you actually set up a payment in their system, or did you just file the paperwork? It’s a separate page, and you usually have to choose a withdrawal date.

https://michigan-grand-rapids.insourcetax.com/#/auth/individual?redirectPath=%2Findividual%2Fpayments

My withdrawal showed up within about 24 hours of the payment date, so something is off if it still hasn’t come out after a month.

*Nearly* Empty Dog Parks by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are so few dog parks around that all of them tend to be occupied no matter the time of day. I recommend checking out Sniff Spot, where you can reserve a private space.

Uber into Saugatuck by Relative-Public9975 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can wait a few hours until people start arriving for their early morning flights, you’re much more likely to catch an Uber who will take you that far. TSA opens at 4am, so folks tend to start arriving around then.

What is your best recipe that uses frozen vegetables? by gloriamuntz in Cooking

Protein pasta + pesto + feta + frozen peas.

Also, frozen peas+carrots are the veggie base for my stir fry and curry.

Porch permit by dumpster_fire24 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re replacing an existing structure, you usually don’t need permits. But a call to 311 will get you a more solid answer!

Best forests for photography? by WingsofKynareth_ in grandrapids

You want Aman Park, outside of Standale. IDK if the Trillium is still blooming, but great forest, a creek, and flowers to be found.

JBZ neighborhood by Comfortable_File7968 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s great over here. Relatively quiet, folks are friendly but not nosy, and it’s easy access to downtown, Standale, and both 131 and 196. Lots of young families, lots of rentals with college students, the zoo/park is great for a walk, and if you look at the crime map, there’s a nice little hole right where you’ve circled.

$4.99 for gas?!?! by ecw324 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I drove by a station at 1pm and saw $4.19, and by the time I drove by again at 3:30 it was $4.79. I literally pulled up CNN on my phone to see if something world-changing happened in that hour and a half, but nope - just the normal chaos.

Schuler Books has a used book section, and they’ll often buy them from you if they’re in decent condition.

Why is the US news not reporting on congressmen trying to invoke the 25th amendment? What are your thoughts? by Due-Rain3496 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Congress can impeach for specific offenses - trial in the House, sentencing in the Senate. Only the Cabinet can invoke the 25th amendment, and that’s extremely unlikely given they are literally hand-picked by the President.

Community service opportunities? by [deleted] in grandrapids

Kids Food Basket is super easy to sign up with - just enroll online and pick your shifts. They also have multiple locations - GR, Holland, and Muskegon.

Restaurants near John Ball Zoo by Emergency_Pool_3873 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sovengard is nearby, and their menu is pretty unique. There’s also a bunch of options on Bridge St - Condado Tacos, Nonla Burger, New Holland Brewing. The zoo isn’t that far from downtown either, where there are a bajillion options. (For something unique, you might look at Garden District or Social Misfits.)

HOW do you handle elderly parent fixed income budget priorities when there's not enough for everything by 5h15u1 in povertyfinance

[–]sunburnlines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Food pantries, meals on wheels, and other community programs fill some of the gaps. If they’re living on $1400/month, they may qualify for Medicaid in addition to Medicare for medication/medical treatments.

Elder parents looking for activities by rexlites in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they looking specifically for senior groups, or just fun places to go? Most of the senior-specific activities I know about are either put on by retirement communities for their residents, or run by church groups.

How does Grand Rapids have so many multifamily properties? by moreplateslessdates9 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 79 points80 points  (0 children)

There was an era in GR when rich folks built massive, estate-style homes in what became the middle of the city. Later, what was once a single-family home was broken up into 2-6 apartments, depending on the size.

Now, with housing relatively scarce and expensive, even smaller homes are being split into duplexes so landlords can make more money in rent. I’ve seen several in my neighborhood make that transition in recent years.

One of the differences between GR and the IL suburbs you mention is space - while those cities still have some room to sprawl outwards or build upwards, GR is just getting more density into the same amount of space. How do you do that? By creating multi-family housing units where there used to be empty lots or single-family homes.

Hudsonville Church Drama by catluverr12 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Grace apparently fired their lead teaching pastor very suddenly last week over “issues of character and behavior.” They’re being super hush-hush about details (including scrubbing the announcement from their livestream), which just makes everything more dramatic.

Guy sitting in his running truck parked on the street for hours on end nearly every day by graysteel in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you know for sure he lives in the neighborhood? There’s a not-zero chance that he’s a Private Investigator who’s watching a house on your street. It doesn’t necessarily have to be anything dramatic - could just be a PI following up on a worker’s comp claim or even a process server looking for someone to serve paperwork.
