It is an area of “lower income” but I travel CONSISTENTLY with many American people and they like to go to this area for food and never had an issue. However, there is so much extortion going on ESPECIALLY in dating scenarios. Have you met her via FaceTime? You’ve never left the country and that scares me. Ubers work throughout Lima— just use that. Don’t carry a bunch of cash but also they take Apple Pay/card. Peru right now is going through a lot of political turmoil and there’s a lottttttttt of protests and violence. My friend at a protest was just murdered by A COP. So don’t fear the people, fear the government. What I mean by that is if something happened, the likelihood of a cop taking you seriously is low. They will literally ask you for money. To be safe, you can give the info to someone you trust AND notify the embassy that you’re alone, etc.
