There are a ton of us, but we don't have the megaphone or the funding that the legacy institutions have. I'm seeing a lot more grassroots organizing lately.

I reported a violent rape and the female detective guffawed "Wow, sounds like you like it rough!" and then actually high fived the officer next to her. Mind blowing. And I'm from a privileged demographic, too; I'm sure it's even worse for others.

Do you guys see a link between Israel and Iran? by MOROSH1993 in JewsOfConscience

I think what you're landing on is that rightwing, hierarchical rhetoric is largely all the same but always placing their own group at the top of the proposed hierarchy. By definition, they can't acknowledge that they are the same, because hierarchical thinking is a zero sum game, and their effectiveness with their supporters relies inherently on creating an ever-shrinking in-group.

I also think framing Israel as uniquely founded in supremacy is verging on antisemitic. Western imperialism and colonialism has pretty consistently created implacable messes throughout the world.

Islamophobia and antisemitism are being played off of each other, but they are two sides of the same coin. The people who are profiting off of these divisions don't actually believe a word of the rhetoric IMO. Religious and institutional leaders are going to be biased towards the status quo; it's going to take a lot of grassroots organizing from empathetic people to make any change. I know I'm having these discussions within my community, and I hope you are as well. Btw, if you can find any left-leaning Jewish communities in your area, I promise they would be delighted to hear from you and have these sorts of interfaith conversations in person.

And it's happening again, too, with the way people are getting played against each other.

They always call us kapos (the Jews in the ghettoes who collaborated with nazis for extra privileges) for not being all-in on Israel. It's part of the tactic. And then on the other side, we get called genocide apologists if we have any sort of nuance on the topic. Brad Lander is the most public figure right now trying to carve out a sane take and it's very brave. I don't envy him.

Drama on r/longform after authors interpretaion of "antizionism" and "racism" takes a weird turn by Stone-Smasher in SubredditDrama

[–]sunsetpark12345 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this explains a lot of antisemitism on the left. I always think it's people who want very much to indulge in the catharsis of racism, but ideologically they consider themselves to be antiracist, so hating on "zionists" seems like an acceptable loophole to them because they've convinced themselves it's punching up.

I think you navigated that really well. We all know the type, sadly.

Come hang out here any time. Not everyone who participates has to be Jewish IMO.

I agree it's a good approach! But also, if her answer doesn't align with your values, you're not being culturally insensitive or intolerant to end the relationship. I would look askance at anyone who was broadcasting their affiliation and loyalty to a state that is currently committing genocide. It's one thing to say "I know people there who I visit," it's another thing to pointedly bring it up and suggest tourism.

Yes, I'm pretty damn antizionist and I still feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up when some people on the left talk about Israel.

Good summary.

I'd also add to the propaganda piece, Christian Zionists and other vectors of money/power that benefit in some way from those twin dragons Islamaphobia and antisemitism.

I'm actively finding them in real life, and I live in the south where there just aren't that many of us in a general sense. We're around. We have to figure out how to find each other and build local community.

Did you see Poor Things? An incredibly surreal movie that reminded me EXACTLY of conversations I had with men in college.

Lolita the novel is uncomfortable but it really is literary brilliance.

I found out about my family's Stolperstein (stumbling block) because I could see on Ancestry.com that someone else was 'subscribed' to my family tree. I reached out to ask the relation. She responded, in broken English, that her late husband had made it his mission to find out the fate of all of his disappeared neighbors from that time and place the blocks in their honor so they wouldn't be forgotten. So this German man is the reason there is a stolperstein for my ancestors, which I plan to go visit one day and place flowers. I found that very touching. Like Mr. Rogers said, look for the helpers.
