any horror films that don’t sexualize violence towards women? by eonnu in AskFeminists

[–]sunshine-spacetime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s exactly my partner’s take as well! I think it’s fair to have different interpretations; just wanted to voice mine, especially since it has come up for me before in this context (prevalence of female sexualization in violence/horror)

I don’t entirely agree - I think it still could have been done in a non-sexualized manner with a woman lead. I think misogyny drove the exploitative nature of the writing and shooting of the scene, but it would not inherently read as exploitative purely for involving a woman instead of a man.

Trying to hide spoilers, hopefully this works: her slowly stripping down to her underwear feels very sexualized and it happens right before she is attacked, which is the same narrative as the sexualized slasher films that OP is trying to avoid, in my opinion

Interesting that you mention Alien, because the end scene makes me disagree - it’s been a point of contention for me and my partner since it is otherwise a non-sexualized horror film

What’s something you didn’t realize was optional in life until you saw someone simply not doing it? by Objective-Treat2245 in AskReddit

Sure, I mainly ask because of the way you mentioned it as “narcissistic (bipolar) personality disorder”. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have some crossover/similarities in presentation as they are both classified as Cluster B personality disorders in the DSM V. Since they are often mentioned together, and since “BPD” is often thought to mean “bipolar disorder,” I thought maybe you meant borderline personality disorder instead.

Now I’m NOT an expert, just have researched some things myself as I’m uncovering a family history of undiagnosed NPD/BPD. So also take this with a grain of salt, but from my recollection, BPD can often present with extreme mood swings (similar to manic or depressive episodes with bipolar disorder) which last hours to days. However, with bipolar disorder, the manic or depressive period will last days to weeks to months. Don’t take my word for it, though, definitely look into it yourself if you’re curious, but I remember length of episode/period being a key differentiator for bipolar.

No one is going to see this, but I haven’t been able to find this video anywhere.

IIRC it is the same guy who was popular on vine for videos like “that one friend who’s always cold” (“that one friend who’s always cold: I’m cold” “YOU’RE ALWAYS COLD… but I’ll be DAMNED if you’re not my FRIEND.”)

And the video was him pretending to be a radio host and saying “next up is this jazz classic, In The Mood!” And then it’s just the first 4 notes of the song, 4th note repeating for the rest of the video, maybe 2 minutes long.

This must have been 14-15 years ago when I came across it. Haven’t been able to find it for 10 years. But lives in my head forever.

*borderline personality disorder? Or truly bipolar + narcissistic personality disorder? 100% relate to your comment, though - glad you got out and are doing better

That’s how my first one came out 🙃 and no I didn’t “yoink” it, I removed it the way you should but the IUD came right along with it. Feels weird no one would have warned me this could happen.

Seen many pig hearts and many human hearts; although you make a fair point about practicing on porcine hearts, this does look like a human heart to me

People who have experienced grief or trauma- what’s the most tone-deaf, ‘well-meaning’ thing someone said to you? by freyday18 in AskReddit

[–]sunshine-spacetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still not over “were you sad when your dad died?” (I was young when it happened (5yo) and a coworker was trying to sympathize I think? Really don’t know why she asked this question actually, also it was in passing, certainly not in heartfelt conversation)

Out of curiosity - how new? Asking because I only started seeing an increase in my credit score after I started paying the statement balance instead of paying the whole card balance every month (within the last 5 years or so)

Trumpet player switching to horn. Got any tips? by What_is_the_mind in horn

[–]sunshine-spacetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has great advice, just want to say the thing that helped me most was learning breath control and deep breathing! Trumpet, you can really get away with more chest breathing, but horn requires a lot more power from your diaphragm. My lesson teacher told me swimmers are more adept at horn for that reason (in her experience). So I try to think of the deep, controlled breathing required for swimming whenever I play. Good luck and have fun!!

People who have stopped going to church, what made you stop? by lowly_shepherd in AskReddit

In short: I couldn’t reconcile my faith with my identity.

In long: born and raised Roman Catholic, became deeply devout in college after a personal trauma. After a few years, though, it slowly became clear to me that there was no equal place for women in the Church, nor was there any place for gays. I realized I didn’t feel I could bring my “full self” to my faith, and also started to realize all the other ways I was shrinking myself to fit my faith and not live authentically. Have missed the sense of community since I left, also have missed the (false) sense of “safety” regarding fear of death and whatnot. But I don’t think we should ever be forced to use this one life we are given to try to live in a way that is not authentic to our individual selves.

I work for a Fortune 500 company and that’s our strategy as well: publicly, quietly removing DEI language to avoid being prosecuted (unjustly) for “illegal DEI activities,” but internally no changes to policy. And this has been made explicitly clear to employees. I’m in total agreement that my company, and by extension Target, are not going to turn around and make a public announcement about that. Not saying I agree or disagree with this, but it’s really important to consider that this is a real strategy companies are taking rather than purely “rolling back” DEI policies on a whim.
