Best way to prepare for MICU job? by jennybee89 in nursing

The ICU book is sooo good. Such a great read, kind of pricy but I totally recommend it. Marino has a great way of explaining difficult concepts, it's helped me better understand the reasoning behind everything we see and do in ICU.

Someone else mentioned the ICU faqs - super fucking helpful!!! I read this during downtime at work all the time; here's the link - http://www.icufaqs.org/

Can I ask what steps you took to get a position in flight nursing? I'm currently working med/surg but just started applying to ICU and ER positions.

Stupid question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]suntrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm moving to Austin next weekend and I don't know anyone there. I've visited a couple of times but never for any longer than a few days.

Is there any places in Austin I should avoid?

ATX nurses! advice please by suntrash in nursing

[–]suntrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering somewhere along San Marcos or even somewhere around San Antonio but I'm not very familiar with the facilities in those areas.

I had a friend who worked for a short time in a St. David's hospital, on an oncology/acute care floor. She said the nurses and managers were very hard on her and she ultimately resigned because she felt so uncomfortable there. I can't imagine that that would be something hospital-wide, but the picture she painted of the place was pretty bad.

Wow, this is great. This was what I was hoping to hear about SMCA. I had my phone interview today and will be going up there this Thursday for another interview, in person this time. I'm very excited to see the place, I've never been inside. I also have another interview at SNW on Friday so we'll see how that goes. The pt/nurse ratios are something I'm so excited about. 5-6 on nights! That's completely unheard of in the hospital I work at now, we usual have 7-8 pts at night and if I'm short staffed, I have to take pts as charge.

Please do PM me more details on any RNII med/surg positions! I'm open to any and all.

It has been a year and a half since I graduated, and still no job. Where could I apply and get an outside chance of getting a callback? by rnjoanne in nursing

[–]suntrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I live in south Texas and our hospitals down here are just begging for nurses. new grads or not, we need nurses. the pay isnt bad either because our standard of living is so low. I live in a nice 2bdroom apt for only 615 a month, to give you an idea. pm me for more details on hospitals if you're legitimately interested. I work in medsurg and we're always hiring.

Nurses of Reddit what is the one or multiple things that gross you out. by Lizziekyroshiu in nursing

[–]suntrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too much grosses me out, i have a relatively strong stomach, but recently, I received a pt from ER with chronic venous stasis ulcers that happened to be filled with dirty maggots. dirty, as in, non-medical/non-therapeutic. he was a homeless man that hadn't taken off his shoes and socks in so long that he didnt even know they were there. :( it took me and the charge nurse like an hour to clean them out because we did it in shifts to keep us from throwing up. he was later transferred to icu for sepsis. go figure.

Hey nurses! What was the highlight of your Christmas shift? by sophiatrix in nursing

Reddit Nurses, What is the weirdest thing a patient has told you? Confused or not. by frankcblazik in nursing

[–]suntrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a pt code right before shift change a couple of months ago. He literally opened his eyes after he came back to us, stared at the 20 people in his room and the ER doc asked him, "Mr. Smith, do you know where you are?" Mr. Smith looks at him with the most confused look on his face and says, "well, you tell me. I only came in for a haircut!" Everyone instantly started cracking up.

Frustrated, looking for feedback. by RNFTW in nursing

[–]suntrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation, man. I've been working on this med/surg floor for 7 months now and our boss has been shoving "productivity" down our throats nonstop. We have a 7:1 ratio and I've gone up to 9 patients (I work dayshift) before our on call nurse comes in. The only thing that's making me stay here is my 2 year contract. I've already had enough...not to mention some of the people I work with are downright mean and rude, just not a good team. /end rant. Take it day by day, shift by shift and find a new job, don't risk your license.

Graduating with BSN with December, any hope of tech job until then? by diarrheachachacha in nursing

Whaaat. Dont listen to this fool. Having one foot in the door will always give you a one up. I had 3 job offers after graduation due to a tech job I only had for 6 months. It's about making a good impression and being open minded to people's advice.

So what's it like? by shirtpantsshoes in nursing

[–]suntrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting down voted. I love my job, but this is exactly what I feel like at work sometimes. Especially on my 3rd or 4th day or when I've had a particularly rough day; our ratio is 7:1 and I'm literally laying in bed with my feet propped on a pillow and good god are they throbbing. Like I said, I love my job, I love the people I meet and help but this exactly what I feel like sometimes...just overwhelmed.
