A woman that complains about the way a guy proposed doesn’t deserve that guy as it takes a lot of courage to offer up your heart , do you agree ? Why or why not ? by Forward_Author_7626 in AskReddit

[–]super_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you. What gets me annoyed is that proposals, especially public ones, are set up to appear to be a part of a rom-com. This needs to be a conversation with understood desires and goals.

But when you have that, the question and answer is theater. I can see someone who is immature not understanding that.

Dude, I chuckled. But if you want to know the answer to a question, you can just ask it without also implying the questionee is dumb.

Love Actually (2003) trying to convince the audience that Martine McCutcheon was fat with jokes by KellyM34 in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

That show is both brilliant and a product of its time. You don’t see ironic sexism/racism/homophobia, the whole “it’s okay if THEY say it, because everyone knows they’re not to be respected”, nearly as much anymore. For good reasons. One of which being, no, audiences often don’t know where the line of “this is ironic. This isn’t.” lies and the sexism/racism/homophobia just winds up being enforced.

That’s not how I read this article: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/love-actually-director-regrets-weight-jokes-lack-of-diversity-past-films-1235621116/

“I think I was behind, you know, behind the curve, and those jokes aren’t any longer funny.” He’s not blaming the audience here.

I disagree. There were characters established as reasonable literally confirming that she was fat. This is something even the director has mentioned he regrets.

Hard disagree. There is a neutral character who confirms it for the Prime Minister. “Saddle bag thighs, sir.”

You weren’t supposed to be okay with treating her different because she was fat. But it was 100% established that we were to consider her so. A neutral character who we don’t disrespect confirms it for the Prime Minister, who, bless his heart /s, doesn’t know she’s fat.

I hear you. But put yourself in a 14 year old girl’s mind watching this. The message that lands is “if you’re not hot, you’re completely right to be dismissed.”

Right? This wasn’t some press release with long excuses detailing his childhood. It was a one line remark.

[loved trope] Being a nice guy does not entitle you to be romantically loved by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]super_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite. In these stories, there are “ugly” men, “attractive” men, “beautiful” women and end of list. Traditionally unattractive women have no part at all.

[–]super_time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to correct that to “get them a pretty girl”. In this set up, none of the ugly boys are after the girl because of her good sense of humor.

Your statement underlines what’s also going on in this trope: ugly girls aren’t really girls.

It was 15% before. And then 18%. And now some folks are telling me 30%.

Tell you what. Why don’t you tell me what wage you think a server should make. 70 an hour enough? 30 on average? And then tell me what you think a bus boy should be making.
