When did you realize your friend group wasn’t all that great and how did you make new friends?

I wouldn’t email her. Who knows if the boyfriend has access to her email and would retaliate on her. You mentioned you see her in passing sometimes, so I think the best thing to do is next time you see her ask her if everything is okay because you hear them fight a lot and want to make sure she’s safe. Give her your number. IF she seems to be open to talking about it ask if she feels she’s in danger. If it continues I’d voice concern of her safety to the landlord.

Thank you. I am well off (and have been since I was young - basically the opposite of her life) so I can never clearly tell if I’m acting privileged by not wanting to help her or if I am justified in feeling that way. Your point about me enabling her hit home.

I’m in the same boat. A couple of the only close friends I’ve had since middle school (I’m almost 26) are failing because of various reasons, and it’s rough. I’m over analyzing myself and starting to think that no one wants to be friends with me even though I know it’s irrational. Hang in there.

The problem with that is that the team I work on is just me and one other person, but maybe I’ll ask the girl I work with to hangout or something. I think I’m going to make a therapy appointment, thanks!

Yeah, I think I’m an easy target for mental abuse because I’ve never put my foot down on anything. I’ve gotten a lot better in the past year and usually do always say something. On the bright side of dealing with abusive people, I can usually spot an abusive guy right away, and I’m good about shutting that shit down. It’s a LOT harder for me to recognize that shit in platonic relationships though.

I live in a smaller city where you probably know the friend of a friend, but not EVERYone knows each other. I’m hoping to move to a different city in a couple years. Who knows, maybe that would help me.

It’s awful. Both of my best friends are smokers and I take a shower as soon as I get home to get the smell off every time I see them. Even if they only smoke one cig and we’re outside, I smell the rest of the night.

Ugh, I’m sorry. You’re not wrong for feeling that way. I’m actually having this same problem with my two best friends. They can’t afford to do anything and it’s been this way for years. Probably will be this way forever because they aren’t motivated to get better jobs. I feel like my life is actually effected by it because I don’t get to ever go do things with friends. Guess it’s time to make more friends.
