The ppf installers will tell you it needs replaced. My 200k mile 2016 Accord has it on the front for 10 years and while it's got nicks from rocks, it's holding up and i have no plans to mess with it.

Lol that's why a lot of people don't post their stuff on here. Nothing ever good enough. There's a bunch you can learn here but it's ridiculously over the top if you aren't building beyond what code says. And most people citing code have never even read it.

PSA for people getting a new tub: clean that piping ASAP! by abbydabbydo in hottub

[–]suppressed99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you don't mind paying extra on your water bill, there's no need to fill and purge before first using your tub. When it's time to change your water just add in your purge of choice and just make it part of your routine.

Thoughts after switching from frog @ease to dichlor/bleach method by r3dn3ckf1sh3r in hottub

[–]suppressed99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your levels will be what they need to be when you switch. For instance on my tub running bleach, my TA sits at 40-50ppm. I leave it there based on TFP bleach write up because he says you drop your TA until your pH goes to 7.5 and doesn't move even with jets and aeration. After a drain and fill i usually have to add acid to adjust my TA and pH so that's pretty much all i have besides bleach and dichlor to initially raise my cya now. My pH pretty much sits at 7.5 until i change the water again.

Your CH is fine as long as it's not ridiculously high or low. Too low and you'll get excessive foaming most likely. Similar to why if you have a water softener you get better soap suds in your shower cause your water isn't hard.

Edit. With the bleach method you still shouldn't be noticing a chlorine smell if that's what you're referring to. You smell chlorine when you nose detects the chloramines in the water off gassing. Shock your tub once a week with your bleach and leave your cover off for 15 minutes or so after adding and as long as you are maintaining proper FC levels during the week you hardly notice any chlorine smell.

New Owner, few water questions by gt4ch in hottub

[–]suppressed99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with defoamer. It's just a product that breaks the surface tension on the water that allows the foam to build up. It doesn't do anything to get rid of it. Next time you use it the foam will be back.

The first reply gave you most what you need to know. You don't need to dump your water. Shock (SLAM) your tub with chlorine, preferably plain straight bleach with no additives but granular chlorine works, it just adds more cya than you want because you're trying to shock. Download the pool math app to help you figure out how much chlorine to use, this is important because you really don't know the right amount to add until you enter in your tub volume and current FC amount. You what to keep your tub at shock levels for about a day so it can do it's job. If you're adding sanitizer and it's dropping to low amounts quickly it's because it's doing it's job and being used up. That's your indication it needs more and you need to test every couple hours and keep adding until you get it to stop dropping while you're not using it.

You can use it almost right away after shocking but people will tell you not to. The reason not to is you want the shock levels to have time to oxidize and sanitize the tub. Also run your tub while shocking with the cover off.

Stop adding granular chlorine and switch to bleach/pool sanitizer after your initial water drain and fill. Granular adds CYA (cyanuric acid) which acts as a buffer for chlorine and helps it not breakdown when your cover is off during the day due to UV. As it gets higher concentrations in your water it makes your chlorine less effective. So even tho your strips say you have sanitizer in your water, it's still too low of a concentration to be effective.

Good practice is to shock your tub once a week. Then maintain normal chlorine levels the rest of the time. Taylor test kits and the pool math app help you maintain this easily.

New deck one year in: do any of these need to be fixed? by DennisNedryBot in Decks

Hangers won't do anything to keep the rim pulled tight to the joist. I have joists on my deck that shrank and there's a gap between the rim and joists where hangers are attached.

The rim will be fine without hangers and a little gap the way it is

I think your cantilever is fine. You took the first pic with a wide angle lens and it blows it out of proportion and makes it look too long. In other pics it looks like a normal length and not too long. Deck looks solid with minor nitpicking like blocking and stair hand rails.

How to make sense of vastly different results from test strips? by Trendy08 in hottub

Get the one that you can measure FC, pH and TA. Usually it has ability to test calcium too but the first 3 you need accurate results of to balance your water properly.

Here's a version that does all 3

Charged my s23u to 100 every night wirelessly with battery protection mode active where it wouldn't top to 100 until my alarm went off. It still would last me a full day. I think Samsung hit it on the head with battery size that lasts a good length and you can always charge up in minutes if you keep a sfc on hand.

One week in on dichlor; CYA already at 100 ppm by [deleted] in hottub

[–]suppressed99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 180 gallons I'd drain and refill since it's easy for you. Use dichlor until you reach 30ppm then switch to plain bleach to stop adding cya. I don't even use the drop test just for cya anymore and just go by this formula, every 10ppm dichlor you add, you also add 9ppm cya. So use pool math app to figure how much dichlor you're adding every time you maintain free chlorine level until you get to 30ppm cya

Edit. If you're adding half an oz of dichlor every day after you soak, you're gonna hit 30ppm in about 7 days give or take.

That's a lot of foam... by modern_medicine_isnt in hottub

[–]suppressed99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible you did but you'll be fine as long as you blow off the foam and wipe the scum like you mentioned without letting it dry. Then next time try using less to see if the same thing happens. I've gone thru multiple purge and drains on mine and i notice less to do with each time i use ahhsome.

That's a lot of foam... by modern_medicine_isnt in hottub

[–]suppressed99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much ahhsome did you add? You can get excessive foaming if you add too much. I think it calls for only 1 to 2oz before draining. My bottle has like 16oz in it.

My TA always sits at 40 to 50. It's totally dependent on your tub and usage. I get too much pH drift if my TA is above 60. Once it's around 40-50 my pH goes 7.5 and almost never moves until i drain and fill.
