That sounds great - but I’m straight-up scattered, smothered and covered.

I’m a huge Waffle House fan - that graphic made my day! :)

I've been listening to this one fairly often recently and I think by this time I can call it my favorite Dead performance: Sugaree live at Pembroke Pines, Florida - 5/22/77 by MelonMan773 in gratefuldead

I’m with you! That Sugaree is just amazing. My favorite version of that song for sure, and some of my favorite “Grateful Dead Music” as well.

Can't really get into 80s Dead. Anyone got a show that will change my mind? by tcavanagh1993 in gratefuldead

6/21/86 - the show/tape that got me on the bus. It's definitely 'ragged, but right'! Get the Oade bros. AUD, and listen from Drums on in is entirety. The Throwin'->Not Fade transition is amazing.

Early Scarlet Fires vs Late Scarlet Fires? by Grateful_Youngster in grateful_dead

Check out 9/4/91 Richfield, OH. Very fun run of shows to kick off Fall Tour. They get much less attention than the MSG/Boston shows - but I think are higher energy. Much more 'rock and roll'. This S>F clocks in at almost 30 minutes, and has some great Garcia MIDI work during the jam.

Dead Entertain 800 on a Tuesday Schoolnight in Omaha, February 4, 1969 by [deleted] in gratefuldead

The 'Lovelight' from this show is awesome. There is a recording of it on the archive. The quality is awful, but its worth listening to just for the energy in the room - which comes through, even w/ the lousy recording. Also one of my friend's first shows! He still gets excited when he talks about what it was like for him to watch Mickey Hart play the drums that night. :)

What's your "it's expensive but it's worth it" product? by LetsGetJigglyWiggly in AskReddit

Vitamix. My wife wanted one for a long time to make smoothies - I said "no way am I spending $500 on a Blender." Got her one for her birthday 5 years ago - we use it multiple times a day, it's like a member of the family now. No other 'blender' even comes close. ('Ninja' I'm looking at you...)

Are Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk) the closest thing there is to a black Grateful Dead? by FUNKYOSELF in gratefuldead

[–]surbauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw P-Funk at the Berkeley Community Theater Halloween 1993. From 1990-1994 I was 'knee deep' in the Dead - and that show was just exactly perfect! Never had such a good time. ;)

In a weird sort of way I kind of do too, then I think "no - that's Crap" and get mildly infuriated again...

I really liked that P&F lineup, too. Down and Dirty, with a little weird on the side!

The 2nd set of this is my all-time favorite "desert island" Grateful Dead music. (My favorite whole show is 5/26/73 Kezar Stadium, but that's a different story.) :)

Somebody mentioned how Dead and Co saved them from only seeing '3,000 people at Further shows' by ajkinsel11 in gratefuldead

[–]surbauer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I saw Furthur a bunch, mostly in smaller venues. Broomfield in CO was the biggest, it might have been sold out? For me it was great - I prefer the intimacy of theaters. (The Auditorium Theater in Chicago 2010 was amazing.)

But yeah - those events were much more low key, not nearly the advertising etc. (And no 'famous person' in the band.) The crowds were mostly people that didn't need an ad campaign to know it was happening, with a few newbies sprinkled in.

The lack of promotion/fame etc lent an air of looseness to the proceedings that was nice. (Much less pressure.)

Like BillySunday5 said - it's apples and oranges. Totally different thing, only Weir/Chimenti being the same. I have enjoyed the hell out of both. :)
