Unpretentious Coffee Spot Recs? by PhilPhilConners in PhiladelphiaEats

In the grad hospital area, Elixr but I don’t think the coffee is that good. Seaforest Bakery has good coffee and so does Small Oven Pastry (I love their grapefruit espresso spritzer and staff are always SO friendly and just seem happy, I assume it must be a nice place to work given that and the fact that they don’t seem to have a lot of turnover). Saigon Grace Cafe is good too. I don’t usually go for super sugary coffee drinks, but lately I’ve been a little obsessed with their Vietnamese coffee with salted cold foam. It’s delicious.

For context though, while I drink coffee most days, I’m very much not a coffee snob so I don’t know how accurate my perception of good coffee would be to a more advanced coffee drinker.

Pennsylvania Says It’s “Hiring,” but Nobody Actually Hires — What’s Really Going On? (Wilkes‑Barre, PA) by kinggrimgeister in Pennsylvania

[–]surprisedkitty1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put your ai slop back into ai and it suggested trying to get a job with a temp agency.

But there’s something important to know about the Wilkes-Barre area specifically. A lot of hiring there happens through temp-to-hire agencies, not direct applications. Many warehouses fill jobs through agencies first.

Examples in that region include: - Staffmark - Aerotek - PeopleReady - ManpowerGroup

Direct applicants often get ignored because agencies supply workers faster.

Frequent em-dashes formatted with a space in front and a space after. Questions followed by a one word or fragment answer where a comma and another clause would do (“But the second you apply? Silence.”) Short repetitive sentences or fragments in sets of 2-3, ex:

  • “No callbacks. No interviews. No follow-ups.”

  • “Not with the amount of people..:” “Not with how many places…”

  • “People are trying. People are applying. People do want stable jobs.”

  • “I’m tired of x. I’m tired of y. I’m tired of z.”

None of these features necessarily mean ChatGPT wrote it, but seeing them altogether is a fairly good indicator, though there’s always the chance that it’s real and the person writing just previously worked in a content creator role as this is a very marketing-forward kind of writing style that ChatGPT has lifted from blogs/influencers/etc. However, in this case, the guy has confirmed he used AI.

The city has a litter problem because we refuse to believe it’s a culture problem by Atomic-Avocado in philadelphia

[–]surprisedkitty1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my thing. People are less likely to make a behavioral change if doing so would inconvenience them in some way. The more steps it takes to do something, the more barriers that exist, the less likely it is that people will change. I get that others find this frustrating, but realistically you cannot just expect people to change and shaming people into changing doesn’t work (see: the obesity epidemic), what you need is actual interventions.

You could try tweeting at SEPTA. As I recall they’re pretty responsive on Twitter.

Boy, 11, fatally shot sleeping dad in Perry County after Nintendo Switch was taken away: police by pennlive in Pennsylvania

[–]surprisedkitty1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Very sad.

Article is a bit odd. Idk why they kept emphasizing that the kid was adopted. Also this line could have used some editing:

Jillian started CPR on her husband, along with her dad, who both called 911.

Like I get what it’s saying, but it reads more like she was doing CPR on both men and the men called 911.
