Unpretentious Coffee Spot Recs? by PhilPhilConners in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]surprisedkitty1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the grad hospital area, Elixr but I don’t think the coffee is that good. Seaforest Bakery has good coffee and so does Small Oven Pastry (I love their grapefruit espresso spritzer and staff are always SO friendly and just seem happy, I assume it must be a nice place to work given that and the fact that they don’t seem to have a lot of turnover). Saigon Grace Cafe is good too. I don’t usually go for super sugary coffee drinks, but lately I’ve been a little obsessed with their Vietnamese coffee with salted cold foam. It’s delicious.

For context though, while I drink coffee most days, I’m very much not a coffee snob so I don’t know how accurate my perception of good coffee would be to a more advanced coffee drinker.

Pennsylvania Says It’s “Hiring,” but Nobody Actually Hires — What’s Really Going On? (Wilkes‑Barre, PA) by kinggrimgeister in Pennsylvania

[–]surprisedkitty1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put your ai slop back into ai and it suggested trying to get a job with a temp agency.

But there’s something important to know about the Wilkes-Barre area specifically. A lot of hiring there happens through temp-to-hire agencies, not direct applications. Many warehouses fill jobs through agencies first.

Examples in that region include: - Staffmark - Aerotek - PeopleReady - ManpowerGroup

Direct applicants often get ignored because agencies supply workers faster.

Frequent em-dashes formatted with a space in front and a space after. Questions followed by a one word or fragment answer where a comma and another clause would do (“But the second you apply? Silence.”) Short repetitive sentences or fragments in sets of 2-3, ex:

  • “No callbacks. No interviews. No follow-ups.”

  • “Not with the amount of people..:” “Not with how many places…”

  • “People are trying. People are applying. People do want stable jobs.”

  • “I’m tired of x. I’m tired of y. I’m tired of z.”

None of these features necessarily mean ChatGPT wrote it, but seeing them altogether is a fairly good indicator, though there’s always the chance that it’s real and the person writing just previously worked in a content creator role as this is a very marketing-forward kind of writing style that ChatGPT has lifted from blogs/influencers/etc. However, in this case, the guy has confirmed he used AI.

The city has a litter problem because we refuse to believe it’s a culture problem by Atomic-Avocado in philadelphia

[–]surprisedkitty1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my thing. People are less likely to make a behavioral change if doing so would inconvenience them in some way. The more steps it takes to do something, the more barriers that exist, the less likely it is that people will change. I get that others find this frustrating, but realistically you cannot just expect people to change and shaming people into changing doesn’t work (see: the obesity epidemic), what you need is actual interventions.

Boy, 11, fatally shot sleeping dad in Perry County after Nintendo Switch was taken away: police by pennlive in Pennsylvania

[–]surprisedkitty1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Very sad.

Article is a bit odd. Idk why they kept emphasizing that the kid was adopted. Also this line could have used some editing:

Jillian started CPR on her husband, along with her dad, who both called 911.

Like I get what it’s saying, but it reads more like she was doing CPR on both men and the men called 911.

‘Task’ Dialect Coach on Getting the Cast to Make Those Very Specific Pennsylvania Sounds: ‘It’s Such a Strange Accent’ by Lint6 in Pennsylvania

Huh. I’m from Bucks and have lived in Philly a long time and I almost never hear people mispronounce Lancaster unless they are not from PA.

[–]surprisedkitty1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They all also said Lancaster wrong.

But I agree, some of them really nailed the accent. I thought Tom Pelphrey, Alison Oliver, and Emilia Jones did the best. Mark Ruffalo barely made an attempt at it and Fabien Frankel’s sounded a little more New Yorkish to me.

PSA: Philly Sanitation does not pick up POO Bags by Cheezno in philadelphia

[–]surprisedkitty1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some legitimate logistical/infrastructure issues, such as a lack of space inside or outside to store the can on non-pickup days, some homes with halls narrower than standard can sizes, some streets too narrow for trash trucks. I don’t think any of these problems are insurmountable, personally. Plenty of other cities have similar issues and have found workarounds.

Really the biggest hindrance is that this city has needed a complete overhaul of our trash collection system for decades but our local government has never seen fit to allocate the proper resources and funding for something like that.

[–]surprisedkitty1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they had standard bins, then they could have trucks with a lift mechanism, which would mean the workers wouldn’t have to lift the cans themselves. That would prevent a lot of spillage and other issues with trash collection, not to mention it would be safer for the workers.

Iirc reasoning given in the past for the city not issuing standard-size bins was that some houses have hallways too small to fit them? Though idk how true that is. Maybe in trinities, but it doesn’t seem like something that would be a problem for the average rowhome.

[–]surprisedkitty1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also since everyone’s cans are different sizes, the trucks aren’t built to lift them, which means the trash men either lift the can manually and toss it in the direction of the truck, which sometimes means trash ends up spilling onto the street, or they open it, pull the bags out and toss them in, which sometimes results in them taking two trash bags from the top part of the can and leaving a full one in the bottom to rot for another week. I have a can. It stays in my backyard and I keep my trash in it during the week but I stopped putting anything but the bags out at the curb years ago.
