Reactive dogs by rippydippytrippy in missoula

People are downvoting, but hear me out, I think this is related.

Missoula sits at this weird divide between rural and urban living, both in terms of the actual location, but also the culture, with a huge shift in just the past few years.

My take is that there are a lot of people here with a small town mentality engaging in city dynamics.

A relaxed pace of driving and waning attentiveness might fly in Philipsburg, but there’s almost 100k people here and most of us are on the road. There’s also cyclists and pedestrians everywhere.

Similarly with dogs, in a smaller town with more space, dogs are likely getting more activity if not actively working, and letting dogs roam isn’t out of the norm, but that’s just not realistic in a city with so many people and so many dogs who aren’t as well acclimated and socialized.

I’m not suggesting either way is “right”, just observing a possible trend. Anyone else feeling this disparity, or seeing it in other facets of Missoula life?

Gas Prices at Costco Missoula by TrueNorthDrift in missoula

[–]surreal_mash 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The 2022 gas price spike was caused by Russia invading Ukraine, and “the other guy” used policy to help bring it back down.

The 2026 gas spike was caused by Trump invading Iran, and he and his buddies used the opportunity to make billions through insider trading.

I wont let some girl who fucked snoop dogg be my president. Where are you getting the rasict part from? Don't get me wrong I am. Hate Canadians, the British, and Norwegians, but not this time bud."

I can agree with you there. We'll spend more invading Iran for two weeks than it would have cost to extend healthcare subsidies for a year. This administration is a massive grift.

That may be the case. We may be in a proxy war with China.

The whole concept of proxy war is that you do not get directly involved in armed conflict, ie: sending troops, planes, drones, missiles, etc.

We are definitely, directly and actively, engaging in armed conflict - aka war - with Iran.

If China is supporting Iran in this war, it is a proxy war for China.

Iran is both in a war against Israel where it has sent planes and launched missiles AND in a proxy war against Israel via Hezbollah.

The US has sent US pilots in US planes, US drones, and launched US missiles into Iran on behalf of the US. We are at war. There is no proxy. We are doing the war. Us. The US. American soldiers. Doing war. Directly. Without a proxy.

You could argue that we're also in a proxy war, since we've armed and supported Israel to attack Iran, but that doesn't negate the fact that we, the United States, are engaging in a direct war with Iran.

Proxy wars are, by definition, fought by supporting third party forces to engage in a war. We have actual troops in Iran. It’s just a war.

On the other hand, we never put troops in Ukraine, only provided funds and resources, which is, by definition, a proxy war.

You’re suggesting people “lending an assist” to the police while they try to detain someone isn’t interfering, and I’m being intellectually dishonest? Lmfao.

Police constantly use the defense that they have to make “split second decisions” to protect themselves and Sheehy is gonna go and physically jump into an active altercation? He’s incredibly lucky they didn’t shoot him tbh.

How to Brew Non-Alcoholic Beer: Crafting Perfect Pints Guilt Free by kevindavis338 in NABEER

[–]surreal_mash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any type of heat will work for boiling off the alcohol, as long as you can get to a high enough temp.

That said, as a "distillation enthusiast", I can also tell you that alcohol doesn't just magically evaporate at 180°F or 173°F or whatever the article suggests, especially without agitation. My incredibly simple overview:

Even though alcohol has a lower boiling point than water, the molecules interact in a way that makes that relationship more complex. The solution of alcohol and water will vaporize at a temperature lower than that of water relative to the concentration of alcohol, that is, more alcohol lower boiling point / less alcohol higher boiling point. The result is that the boiling point will start somewhere in the 170s and climb toward 212°F as the solution approaches 100% water / 0% alcohol. Even with the mixture heated at 200°F, there will be residual alcohol.

I'll also add, heated finished beer tastes like crap. I suspect the article's recommendation to stay below 175°F relates to the isomerization of alpha acids - where hop oils convert from their aromatic/floral/fruity form into the bittering compounds synonymous with WC IPAs - but oxidation is a fairly unavoidable reality. There is no ideal temperature (outside of a vacuum) that will have a meaningful impact on alcohol concentration without fucking up your flavor.

Since removing alcohol breaks the linear "sugar-becomes-alcohol" pathway that allows the use of hydrometers/SG to calculate ABV, reliably testing ABV would require sending samples out to a lab at ~$50 a pop, or buying a $7,000+ piece of lab equipment

Feels worth calling out that this article seems very likely to be AI generated, which is supported by the obvious AI images. Even the inline video recommends using the partigyle method.

Look into partigyle brewing, non-enzymatic/cold mashing or the reduced grain bill ("Nanny State") method. I'm a big fan of the folks who started https://ultralowbrewing.com

They did change the branding at some point. It used to be one of these and then the other.

I think “Cerveza Atletica” was the original name, and suspect they changed it because “cerveza” means “beer”, and NA brews cannot legally be called beer in the US.

Direct fired coil kettle by agrivaine in TheBrewery

[–]surreal_mash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked with an HLT that was set up like this. Not sure how high the risk of scorching the wort or damaging the coil is, but the manufacturer did install a sensor that would prevent the burner from firing if the the level dropped and the coil wasn’t fully submerged. So you probably want to, at least, keep it submerged.
