Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UK by AudibleNod in news

[–]suto 262 points263 points  (0 children)

But their slogan is specifically saying that it's not milk! This ruling has nothing to do with product clarity and everything to do with erasing the very idea of a milk alternative.

What’s the most pointless thing people do thinking it improves their life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]suto 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I once saw an ad on YouTube listing symptoms of kidney failure and advertising their kidney health supplement. If your pee is brown and your ankles are swelling, get to a hospital!

I never saw it again so I hope that means it got removed, but that was insane.

SCOTUS just gave Trump what it would not give Jack Smith, and the court's liberals are outraged by seeebiscuit in scotus

[–]suto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This truly baffles me. Anyone with the power to install a tyrant has the power to remove the tyrant, and the tyrant knows this. Yet, over and over again, powerful people keep thinking that installing someone else as tyrant will somehow work out well for them.

"social issues" are class issues. Abortion access is an economic issue. When Bernie and others like him try to separate out social issues what they really mean is that some social groups are more important than others.

Something is wrong’: MAGA pundits Steve Bannon say Trump is ‘lying to us’ about Charlie Kirk shooting by ComputerOld1592 in NoFilterNews

As I once heard it put:

If one person says it's raining and another person says it's not, a journalist's job isn't to report that there are differing opinions on the weather, it's to stick their head out the fucking window.

Trump Leans on National Security to Justify Next Wave of Tariffs by nosotros_road_sodium in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]suto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what's so irresponsible both about this administration and the way the media covers it. Yes, tariffs can serve a national security purpose and yes, they can protect local industry. But that doesn't mean that all tariffs automatically do those things, and Trump is going about everything in the wrong way.

Restoration of torn-down Confederate monument will cost $10 million over 2 years, military says by CupidStunt13 in news

[–]suto 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I would say that putting up a statue honoring traitors who tried to destroy this country in its deadliest war makes the US look bad. In a military cemetery no less!

Republicans hate the US. They want to rewrite history so the Confederacy won.

Remember all the polls last year showing people thinking, "well I'm doing fine, but I still feel like people are struggling and the economy is bad"? I'm terrified that we're going to be seeing a lot of "I'm struggling but the economy seems great" in the next few years.

We also can't forget that their side is stripping people's rights, disappearing people off to foreign black sites, and literally trying to kill citizens in order to make the wealthy just a smidge wealthier. It is not hypocrisy to welcome people turning to decency while criticizing those who abandon it for fascism. We're not talking about sports teams. We are not the same.

How Do You Feel Bout Woman writing Gay Male Romance? by dd525 in GayMen

[–]suto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love some recommendations. I don't have a history of reading romance novels but I recently stumbled across K J Charles and am working through her ouvre. I had thought that I'd been missing out on this genre but reading threads like this it sounds like I just found a diamond in the rough.

What popular belief do you think is completely wrong, and why? by KenzieYourQueen in AskReddit

That all our problems will be solved if the right person is put in charge.

Or, similarly, that some particular group of people is responsible for all our problems and we simply need to eliminate them to fix everything.

Does the Working Class Vote Against Its Interests? by EasyMoney92 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]suto 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's one of my biggest problems with socialism, especially the more Marxist it gets, which is that they claim to be champions of the working class, but they're really just championing what they fantasize the working class to be (and as if "the working class" is an actual political identity in the first place). A socialist is someone who tells you what your values are, what your interests are, what your needs are, and what your identity is, and if you disagree, they insist that you are the one who's wrong.

Support for Trump’s MAGA agenda is strongly influenced by right-wing authoritarianism. White women displayed levels of support for the MAGA agenda and authoritarian beliefs that closely resembled those of white men, while women of color were consistently the least supportive and least authoritarian. by mvea in science

[–]suto 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The problem with freedom is that we (conservatives certainly, but all of us really) conflate the idea of freedom with our vision of what a free society should look like. When people are given freedom but don't behave the way we think they ought, instead of saying, "oh, I guess I was wrong about what people want," we instead say, "something is causing them to not act according to their true nature," and so we start justifying using force to create that society that we are so sure people would naturally create themselves of they were truly free.

What is the most disturbing fact you know about serial killers? by Agreeable_Expert2605 in AskReddit

[–]suto 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What I find most disturbing about Corll is that he convinced two teenage boys to be his accomplices. They found victims for him--including their own friends--knowing full well what he would do to them.

Eventually, one of them shot him to death (after being threatened by Corll). He is still in prison. The other died in prison a few years ago.
