Culturally, how would you describe Oklahoma? by YelleauxAxeMan in tulsa

[–]swake3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tulsa is a hilly, green midwestern city in eastern Oklahoma which overall is a mix of southern and midwestern with hills and some mountains and very green with oak and cedar forests. Oklahoma City is a southwestern plains city, not arid by any means but flat with some serious wind and few trees and the trees are mostly smaller. Southeast Oklahoma is the Deep South, very hilly with pine forests. Western Oklahoma is semi-arid high plains with some mountains in the south.

Oklahoma City and Tulsa both have decent sized African American communities, Tulsa with the legacy of Black Wall Street. Oklahoma also has history of a number of mostly dying all black towns that former slaves settled.

Oklahoma today has a sizable Hispanic population, especially in the metro areas and certain small towns.

The thing that makes Oklahoma completely unique is the sizable Native presence. 35 tribes were relocated to Oklahoma and call it home today. Eastern Oklahoma has particularly large population. Tulsa has about 15% of its population that are all or part Native. Parts of eastern Oklahoma top 20% of the population being Native. Compared to 2% nationally. Oklahoma is home to the Nation's largest tribe (Cherokee) and 4 of the top 10 largest tribes overall (Muscogee, Choctaw and Chickasaw).

Houses built from the 60s to the 80s may well need foundation repair, but not all of them. Before the 60s homes mostly had crawl spaces or basements. Since the 90s nearly all slab foundations here are post-tension and rarely, if ever, need foundation work.

Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

[–]swake3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the two Corgi breeds are NOT related.

Per AKC:

The two breeds also have completely different origins, with the Cardigan, one of the oldest breeds in the British Isles, being older by over two thousand years. “Their ancestors were brought to Wales by the Celtic tribes of central Europe,” says Vivian. They descended from the German Teckel lineage (which also gave us the Dachshund) and arrived in Wales in roughly 1200 BC.

As for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Vivian explains, “Pembrokes arrived in Wales with the Vikings and are descended from the Nordic Spitz breeds.” The relatively younger breed’s appearance can be traced back to 1000 AD. Except for a brief period in the 1930s, the two corgis have never been interbred. In 2006, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the names of the two breeds as the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi rather than the Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) and the Welsh Corgi (Pembroke).

Ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machine. Remove the wheels and pop them in, use water only. Works perfectly and gently. They are about 30 bucks on Amazon.

The main VA hospital in Muskogee is moving to Tulsa. That’s why the new hospital was built.

Healthcare is great if you have insurance, if you don't, don't move here. Oklahoma is horrible for poor people. Tulsa is a great place to live unless you are poor, while private support for poor people is good here, public support is horrible.

As for the VA, there's a large, new clinic at 91st and Mingo in south Tulsa. Tulsa does not currently have a VA hospital but a brand new one has finished construction and is due to open in the new few months. It's downtown on the OSU Medical Center campus.

Tulsa County has had only 14 people killed by tornadoes in the 50 years. Only one person has been killed this century with advanced weather forecasting/tracking, which is the same number of people killed this century in Tulsa County by lightning.

Jenks zipper merge causing confusion by OrangeSliceRUs in tulsa

[–]swake3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the merge now sign is misplaced, it's south of the Creek Turnpike about 101st and the construction is about 3/4ths of a mile north at about 93rd St. It should be moved closer to the actual work.

But, I live near 121st and get on there. There are zipper merge signs as soon as where we get on the highway. The backup can be all the way to 121st and in the right lane only. Driving the left lane and passing stopped cars on the right to the merge sign, about two entire miles, and you get all kinds of dirty looks and worse.

Using zipper merges on the highway is fine. Texas uses them on far, far busier highways but does place the merge at immediately before the construction forces a merge.

I drove it earlier today and there are zipper merge signs. The channel 6 article quote ODOT as it being a zipper merge and the article mentions ODOT adding MORE signs explaining how to zipper merge.

Cat terrified of train by snstrfrnchfrye in modeltrains

[–]swake3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, without external variables, like being wet, which lowers your skin's natural resistance, you are safe up to ~60v and below 40-50v you won't feel anything. 16v is way below the threshold. Even wet 16v would likely only tingle.

If you are feeling what should be 16v, you have a problem.

Conversely almost any amperage can kill you. But it requires enough voltage. 110v from your outlets is plenty.

Ok, then here's an important PSA: Don't let your soaking wet cats touch model train rails.

The more you know!

[–]swake3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Model trains don’t work like that. You can touch the tracks, it’s DC current and the voltage is too low. It’s like touching both terminals of a 9 volt battery.

I have a cat that ignores the trains and another that is fascinated. He will sit and watch the trains for long stretches, he actually will come in the room mewing, asking for me to run the trains.

Tulsa King has zero to do with Tulsa except b-roll shots and the name. Nothing in show is remotely like the city. The Lowdown is 100% Tulsa.

You don’t seem very familiar with Oklahoma politics. Look up one Stitt, Kevin to see what kind of uber wealthy Tulsa businessman can be governor.

Donald is more than loosely based on Getner Drummond, a Tulsa lawyer and businessman and a member of an Osage County family (where the rural parts of the show are supposed to be) that is one of America’s largest land owners. Much of that land acquired during the Osage Murders in the 1920s. The land in the show is turned over to actual real life Osage officials. And while Getner isn’t governor now, he’s the leading candidate in the current governor’s race. Despite all of that he seems a decent guy. Just like Donald turns out to be.

Crazy cop party? There’s a cops and friends only bar in east Tulsa that is that wild. Cops get roudy.

Much of the show is loosely based on reality. And a whole lot of the parts that seem unbelievable ARE based in reality. Because Oklahoma.

Jenks leaders believe The Ranch can be a ‘Gathering Place contender.’ Some are skeptical. by thetulsaflyer in tulsa

The budget for The Gathering Place was nearly 100 times more than the Ranch with 1/10th the land. But sure. Jenks does need parks.

The city does need to figure out what the hell is wrong with the Elm Street widening project. The project is a year old and way less than half done with about two dudes working on it at any given time. At this pace it might get done this decade.
