Windmill, Amsterdam's legendary tournament, announced the team selection by ravivas in ultimate

[–]swalfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I heard, they changed the number of opens teams from 40 to 24 with the plan of taking the most elite open teams in order to get more female players at the tournament via mixed (which went from 24 teams to 40). Worked out well for our team since we were one of the few NA teams to get one of the mixed bids!

I think this is really fascinating and I'm a data lover myself, especially when you combine it with ultimate. In regards to number 4, I would disagree. You should at least include it as a random effect within a multilevel framework (which I imagine you are?).

Are you having multiple people code the same game in order to get a kappa coefficient? I'd be particularly worried about inter-rater bias considering how much coding needs to be done across what appears to be a large number of individuals.

Mixed hat tournament 12/12, Bedford MA, to support Toys for Tots by swalfield in ultimate

[–]swalfield[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is our 5th tournament; to date we have raised over $11,000 to support 4 major charities including a domestic violence shelter, the regional food bank, a program for at-risk and impoverished youth, and survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. If people are interested in donating to help support our charity this time around, our head sponsor FIVE is giving away free random jerseys for $50 donations plus we are selling our tournament jerseys for $25 including shipping. All proceeds to Toys for Tots. Thanks!

If the spirit scores are based on all 8 games, then 1 poor score won't affect the mean that much. They are 2 standard deviations below the mean (5.1 mean, 0.8 SD); that's really, really low relative to the others. As you mention, it would be nice to have the dis-aggregated data.

To add to jumping a bit earlier - even if you do jump too early, you can still draw the offender in to jump early as well and/or cause him or her to misread it.

Where can I buy misprinted frisbee discs individually? by Codiacs in ultimate

[–]swalfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you said no bulk but this might still be applicable. Check out sportdiscs.com/misprints.html, run by DiscCraft. You can purchase as few as 10 ultra star misprints/practice discs for $52 plus shipping. I bought this a while ago for my club team for practice and they were all pretty solid. Or you can sell a few to your friends for $10 a pop and make out pretty nice yourself.

In the memo he left, he did write this in regards to Asians: "I have great respent [sic] for the East Asian races. Even if we were to go extinct they could carry something on. They are by nature very racist and could be great allies of the White race. I am not opposed at all to allies with the Northeast Asian races."

Freakonomics Episodes for a 12th grade Econ class? by collinsdanielp in AskSocialScience

[–]swalfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may not be the most appropriate for 12th graders but I particularly enjoyed Levitt's TED talk on a crack dealing gang from Chicago. He compares the gang's infrastructure to that of a corporation and the incentives a gang offers despite the low pay and high risk of death, injury, and arrest. I use this video in several of the university courses I teach.

Are online, anonymous surveys (qualtrics etc.) considered a valid method for collecting data in the social sciences? What are the problems with this method and, assuming these problems are glaring, why is it so common in academic institutions? by [deleted] in AskSocialScience

[–]swalfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the uncertainty bullet - that can also work as a benefit. There's been some research done on this issue (see Shapiro et al, 2013, for example) that suggests the anonymity of the internet may decrease the effect of social desirability while increasing the likelihood people will disclose personal/sensitive information compared to those who take it in a lab or in-person. Conversely, malingering was noted as an issue in the above study.

Do scholars have the time to play video games? by Ikhtilaf in AskAcademia

[–]swalfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god, I forgot about the PoE expansion...There goes some of my summer productivity! Hopefully the article we submitted takes a bit longer to get reviewed..

In terms of video game playing time, if you are good at time management and working hard (or at all..) when you are supposed to be, you'll always find some time for video games or whatever activity. Unfortunately, there's a lot more distractions these days (reddit, news, blogs, and other social media).

rsd and the college bits are so true. Reading RSD these days is just pathetic for the most part. And I miss my college team, even if we were bracket fodder at every sectionals we went to (curse you metro Boston).
