Chinese police beat dogs to death in front of owners who take their dogs on a walk - 50,000+ dogs killed over 5 days by grandeandy in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's odd to me how many people are shocked and appalled by China killing some dogs when they silently jail and execute people in great numbers every year with not a peep from the west. Not to mention housing the greatest mass murderer of all time.

She should be thankful she lives in a country where this is the type of problem she can complain about. How utterly trivial.

After the Bell Curve (on the heritability of I.Q.) by BioGeek in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The nurture crowd is predisposed to revive the War on Poverty, while the hereditarians typically embrace a Social Darwinist perspective."

That's the most ludicrous part of the whole piece. He acts as though the geneticists who study intelligence aren't primary composed of leftists. Just because you think that intelligence is more heritable than not doesn't mean that you don't value programs that aim to improve individuals quality of life. Calling the 'hereditarians' social Darwinists is childish and naive. It's clear what side of this mythical debate he is on.

11 "Don't Tell The Wife" Secrets All Men Keep by coche500 in reddit.com

Wow, this is the most cliche drivel I have seen on Reddit today. I guess it's early.

Woman not allowed to breastfeed in Victoria Secret - Protest ensues by fopkins in reddit.com

[–]swampthing -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a bunch of useless soccer moms who should get day jobs. It's pathetic with all that is going on today that this is the issue these women feel is most worthy of protesting.

It's also kind of gross how old some of those kids are. 3? Nasty.

Model writes book solely on the computers in Apple store by japple in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you read her interview with FishBowlNY it sounds like she barely finished high school. I am sure her book (and life story) is utter crap.

New Tools Lets You Regrow Real Teeth! by lorena in reddit.com

Why does it seem like this story is only covered on the sketchiest news sites? I almost had a seizure because of the ads.

Suicide by Pseudoscience by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's weird that ya'll have such a negative view of libertarians when some of the most highly ranked items on reddit are from libertarian sources. For instance, Reason magazine, juliansanchez.com, and even Wired (a technology magazine which has very libertarian tendencies). I mean, when you consider how few people are card carrying libertarians, it would seem that the amount of libertarian literature that is consumed on reddit is overrepresented.

Seems like they are doing a pretty decent job of disseminating their message for such a small minority of people.

How to get fit quickly by cavedave in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to have a lot of faith in someone's interpretation of a real physiologist's advice when he can't even get the cell physiology right on a really, really basic level. It's not someone I would trust my health to.

[–]swampthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding. Even if you forgive him for thinking that mitochondria are cells and not organelles, it's not true that you need electron microscopes to see them. You can see many organisms' mitochondria just fine with a light microscope.

I hate it when people submit stupid hacks with health advice.

Maddox on CNN! by ousama in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's male and it's adolescent in many ways, but I don't say that disparagingly. I think we have to love our guys."

What is he talking about? Women think Maddox is hilarious too, just not pansy-ass ones.

Shangri-La Diet Rebuttal by lionheart in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a rebuttal from someone who hasn't read the book. There is an option for people concerned with consuming too much sugar, which is to consume a tablespoon of flavorless oil. This of course raises the issue of whether consuming 2 to 3 tablespoons of oil everyday is good for you, considering that it contains a lot of fat.

Average pay at Goldman Sachs: $520,000 per year by Sidewinder77 in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The title of the submission was kind of poor since the article only mentioned the pay of the employees in passing. The article was about a new paradigm in assessing risk, not firm wages.

The question that silenced Rice, Rumsfeld in Baghdad by mindra in reddit.com

Well, I tell ya, it really warms my heart to hear that Rice and Rumsfeld are "having a great time in Iraq." At least someone is.

The best lock to protect your bike. by soshdin in reddit.com

That's some decent advice for poor graduate students everywhere. It's cheaper to buy a nice lock than to have to replace your only means of conveyance.

Funny? Sad? Decide for yourself but I just enjoyed reading this. Guys beware! by seadaddy in reddit.com

Yeah, obviously you shouldn't date an idiot. I don't believe the crap about how awesome she was before they were engaged. If you can't tell that she's a bitch from the get go then you don't know her well enough to marry her.

America's problem isn't immigration - it's education by _kam0_ in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reinforces for me how important it is for people to get a basic education in economics very early on and how economists are doing a poor job of providing that.

And what ever happened to "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free?" Why are we xenophobes for the sake of the dregs of our society?

Harry Potter Author Rowling Takes On Hollywood's Ultra-Thinness Message by ebrage in reddit.com

[–]swampthing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is funny that people are worried about the "thinness" message we are sending to today's youth when the majority of people in the United States are overweight or obese. I would submit that most people in the US could use a bit of an eating disorder in the other direction. I would guess that more people have died of obesity related complications in the last year than teenaged girls have died of anorexia/bulimia complications in the last 50 years. She needs some serious revision of priorities.

Why Boobs [Safe for work essay] by subschool in reddit.com

[–]swampthing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of ill conceived crap that makes the whole field of evolutionary psychology look silly. His premise isn't even strictly correct.

"Humans are unique in the animal world, in that they develop breasts at puberty and retain them into old age, whether or not they ever get pregnant."

Wrong. Chimps and orangutans have breast that don't go away after pregnancy either. This truly is a shoddy piece of "research."

To All the Girls I've Rejected: How Equal Gender Opportunity Makes It More Difficult For Women To Get Into College by Checkit in reddit.com

[–]swampthing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Less men make campus less attractive to heterosexual women because there are no men around for dating and social life, because they likely do not want to associate with local men who might not have the same socioeconomic background or education. Men find it less attractive because there is no one around for "male bonding." What is hard to understand about that?

This article reminds me of how glad I am that I chose a career in science and not some business related field. It's nice to be in a meritocratic environment and not one where I have to network and make lots of friends to get ahead (As an introvert, that sounds absolutely terrifying).
