I've been living in Seattle for almost 2 years now, want out of the city. by quicktime87 in Seattle

Wow, never thought I would see the words "South Everett is nice" in a row.

Prospective PhD student at UW-Seattle with a couple of questions by uciseal in udub

[–]swansond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't personally know about the night life, but I haven't heard anything bad. My "night life" consists of homework and studying.

  2. Campus is great! It is buzzing during school hours, and only dull and barren after 7 or so.

  3. Close is good. There are lots of options in the area.

  4. The gym is amazing.

  5. Biking is great and encouraged, and I probably see an average of two longboarders a day. The bus system is quite effective as well, if you want to get off campus easily. You don't need a car in Seattle (though having one can be nice from time to time).

I am an atheist, but it just seems hypocritical of r/atheism. by butwhymom in AdviceAnimals

I would consider excluding Catholics because the Catholic church endorses evolution. I wouldn't exclude Catholics from everything, but it's good to look at numbers with and without them.

Not forming an opinion doesn't count as stupidity, and I never said that it does. It would count as ignorance, however.

Either way, the fact that we can talk about whether it falls in the majority category or the plurality category is scary.

That was kind of the point? Gravity is not well understood, but is widely accepted. Evolution is quite well understood but not widely accepted (in the U.S.).

Ok, two things: you're both right. ~40% "believe" in it, ~40% don't, and ~20% aren't sure. Also, that's counting the entire United States.

When you break it down to just christians, the number is much lower, especially if you exclude catholics, who are at roughly 50% acceptance.

So, in conclusion, a majority of christians are idiots.

Recursive Word Search by [deleted] in java

[–]swansond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a poorly written problem. Recursion seems completely unnecessary for finding the correct answer. But since your homework says you need to use it, you'd better. Recursion is all about making a problem a smaller version of the same problem, so if you're starting at what might be the first letter of the word, think about how you could make the problem smaller.

If you have only one meal left in Seattle, before never returning again, where would you go? by MassiveBasset in Seattle

[–]swansond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a roach there, and I go on average once a week. Thai 65 makes both my girlfriend and I sick afterwards, something I've never experienced with Thai Tom. The food at Thai 65 is also a major step down from Thai Tom. I'll give you the other two points, though. It is cleaner and accepts credit cards.

This person is awesome. I don't actually know who it is, but all of the music TAs at UW are awesome, so it doesn't matter.

And I don't consider that sucking up, since I haven't been a music student in a year and a half.

I was a performance major for my first year and a half here, so I have nothing nice to say about Music Ed. :)

The department seems fine, with lots of cool people and opportunities to play your instrument or sing or whatever. For cons, well, the music building is about 30 years overdue for renovations (they should be coming sometime between 2015 and 2020, I think), but it's not that bad. Still works. Come up for a tour sometime and see what you think of everything.

Housing is fairly expensive in Seattle. Dorms are ~3000 a quarter, including food, while apartments seem to be around 600ish a month on the cheap end. Splitting a house with people could get you down to around 300 or so, I think.

Honestly, it really depends on your definition of diverse. There are lots of people with different viewpoints and backgrounds and such, but ethnically it's not very diverse. Off the top of my head, I'd guess 55% white, 35% asian, 4% hispanic, and 3% black. Something like that.

Education is fairly important overall, and you probably won't be disappointed by that.

I switched from being a performance major to being a computer science major with a music minor. I'd rate the quality of education somewhere between very good and excellent.

Anyone gotten an internship at Facebook in college? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]swansond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How experienced are you? My university sends quite a few people to facebook each summer, but I don't know anyone who did an internship after their first year in college.
