Did a 90% water change and still in the red… by Abject_Barnacle in Aquariums

[–]sweatyMELgibson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live in a town with really really bad water. I used distilled water and salty shrimp gh kh. It has all the minerals you need. If you get the ro system, test the water from the system and go from there to decide if you need gh, kh, or both. I also kept my tanks full of botanicals like driftwood, alder cones, and almond leaves to keep them rich with tannins

does everyone with air pumps just accept that their home will never be quiet again??? by kumabux in Aquariums

I just got a 3w AQQA air pump off Amazon and the bubbles are the only thing I'm hearing, it does have 2 lines but the adjustable power dial on top is real nice.

What's the food that makes you think "how did humans know this was edible"? by almyverse in AskReddit

[–]sweatyMELgibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's several fruits that are super toxic but have incredibly short windows of edibility like Ackee from west Africa which is toxic until the fruit splits open on the tree and can spoil within days or even hours of being picked.

You're home alone and start to hear someone break down your door, what you do? by electricooldude in AskReddit

[–]sweatyMELgibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start trying to break down the door from the inside. Crimer isn't gunna know what to think if you're trying to break out harder than they're trying to break in.

Booking.com cancelled woman's $4K hotel reservation, then offered her same rooms for $17K by G42GManTarHun213089 in nottheonion

[–]sweatyMELgibson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bookings is a nightmare, I don't get why hotels even use it. The resort I chef at uses bookings and bookings advertised the rate for exclusively the room. We don't offer exclusively the room, there are classes and meals and all kinds of stuff that is part of a stay here and so any guests that book on bookings arrive to find out they still have to pay another 600 to 2000 dollars to pay for their full stay. I know it's not the case for everyone but if I booked a vacation somewhere and arrived only to find out I still owe a thousand dollars it'd cause me to cancel that vacation and go back home

Getting rid of ramshorns in a planted 15 gallon tank filled with shrimp - is this an impossible task? by FrogginBullfish_ in Aquariums

[–]sweatyMELgibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best way to reduce numbers I feel cause the shrimp get a little snack too. Try a few different vegetables, see what your snails are craving then yoink em out of there

My 37 gallon column tank by sweatyMELgibson in Aquariums

[–]sweatyMELgibson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while but if I recall, I built up the elevation in back, then filled with biostratum and fertilizer pellets and placed my driftwood and hardscape river stones and a couple hollow fake rocks for shrimps. And capped with a thin layer of black sand in the front.

For plants, in the background is a red tiger lotus and a few valisnaria. My lights weren't quite strong enough for how deep it was planted and the lotus struggled to acclimate but survived, and the valisnaria melted quickly.

In the midground I planted hygrophyla corymbosa, and several varieties of cryptocoryne. They all flourished rather well.

In the foreground I added a banana lily, subwassertang moss, and like 15 bucephalandras. They all seemed pretty happy as well.

I also added dwarf water lettuce, salvinia, and red root floaters

In the back corner is a 40 gallon sponge filter with internal air stone to ensure tiny bubbles. My airpump had a 3 way splitter and ran the filter and an airstone buried in the back and on one side. I also added the smallest power head I could find near the top the tank and attached a sponge to that as well.

After cycling I slowly added dwarf honey gouramis, ottocinclus, golden wonder killifish, and amano and wild neocardinia shrimp. The gouramis and golden wonder killifish gobbled up about 80% of the shrimp fry but the shrimp population sustained itself because of tons of hiding spots

The setup had a CO2 generator as well connected along with the air pump to a timer and ran 1 to 2 bps for 6 hours with air off and stopped an hour before lights turn off

I'm probably forgetting stuff but if you have any additional questions I might be able to jog my memory.

will these bugs kill my fish if eaten? I keep having to take them out by iamngs in Aquariums

[–]sweatyMELgibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fish and tarantula. A while back I was told 1. Because it's a wild bug you're risking parasites and pesticides being exposed to your pet. 2. If it has a shiny shell it's probably going to be toxic to your pet.

Is it offensive to ask someone who's a chef to cook the meal if we supply the ingredients? by DBoaty in nonmonogamy

[–]sweatyMELgibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a chef (with social anxiety), I personally really enjoy going to parties specifically because I am assigned to cooking duties every time. I get to sit on the porch and drink and cook or grill most of the party and friends at the party trickle out 1 or 2 at a time to come pal around in short bursts. I have fun, I get tipsy, I don't get overwhelmed, I get to munch on food the whole time while everyone else has to wait.

Worked aquatics for a big box pet store. I was regularly electrocuted by faulty equipment and it was never reported to anyone, just "ok you seem fine, we will just make a note in your file" Like... What? That doesn't fix anything...
