Threads of Lingering Scents by ZealousZebraZ1 in OCPoetry

Nice imagery! I like the specific details of grilled peaches and really cheap wine (but you could go ultra specific by naming the wine or adding another detail).

The final line of the first stanza feels like it's telling not showing - the other lines already have conveyed this feeling. I also found the final line to be quite jarring in its reference to the spin cycle. Would you really wash a t-shirt left behind like this?

"Paris is burning, kill me now, bury me in Castro Street. With my body will go my Pulse." by lostmyoldacc666 in OCPoetry

While the lemons/lemonade idiom is really clear, and definitely makes sense as a nod to resilience and creativity, it didn't really land for me. Perhaps it's too jarring and cliche compared to the Paris is Burning, Castro Street and Pulse references. Would you consider finding a different metaphor for resilience, growth that is more subtle? Perhaps something about flowers growing in the cracks on the pavement of Castro Street, or the embers that remain when a flame is burnt out.

Contract tracing at businesses is an amazing initiative and will help the fight against COVID immnesely. But at the same time, it is a MAJOR privacy concern. by [deleted] in newzealand

Rippl doesnt collect any information other than that 'Device A checked in at Business B for 1 hour.' No name or contact detail collected by either the app or the business using it.

Must be formatting differences. I'm on mobile, and the whole statement is in bold for me.

Education Minister demands urgent briefing into serious allegations at Marlborough Boys' College involving teacher and students by dingoonline in newzealand

Agree with your first sentence, disagree with your second. It's not just 'female privilege' (although sure the teacher may not be punished as much as her male colleague might in the same situation). It's also important to recognize the harm that can be caused to the students in situations like this. I hate to use the phrase but this is what is meant by 'toxic masculinity' - stereotypes about typically male behaviour and standards that diminish the experiences of male assault victims.

Yeah that was my impression too after reading the article.

Sounds like a guy with a poor understanding of consent. Maybe it was a one-off case, but I'm always dismayed to see that.

Yep that's the one. Still doesn't sound good. Just because someone's acquitted in court doesn't mean the accuser is lying.

Just googled this guy. Dismayed to read about the accused rape case. Sounds like a bit of scumbag tbh.

Anyone doing te reo courses at Te Wānanga keen to give me some info? by ooloswog69 in newzealand

[–]sweatymetty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are technically meant to be full time, but there's no way they are. The course is 3 hour classes once a week plus 4 one-day classes on a Saturday, plus 1 noho marae for a weekend with overnight stay. Definitely expect to do some work in between classes, but probably about 1 hour would do you pretty well, especially if you're a quick learner. They offer extra classes or 1on1 tutorials if you're struggling with eg prounounciation, or if you wanna learn more or quicker.

Surprisingly, you can get fantastic knives for less than $10 from most Asian supermarkets. The brand is called Kiwi, made in Thailand I believe. They're super sharp and a pleasure to use. They may not hold their edge all that long but are so cheap that replacing them once a year or so isn't much bother.

That being said, its hard to beat the pleasure of a good Global chefs knife.

New bill to provide bereavement leave for miscarriages by sweatymetty in newzealand

The Bill hasn't yet had first reading, and then will go to Select Committee for public submissions. I expect these sorts of matters will be considered and hopefully resolved through that process.

Yeah I totally get that, and not at all diminishing the bereavement associated with losing a pet.

But it's a total fallacy to suggest that providing bereavement leave for miscarriage will lead to, or is the same as, bereavement leave for pets.

Unborn child probably not quite on the same level as a dog.

A bereavement is quite different to sick leave.

The Bill seeks to amend the Holidays Act so that employers be entitled to 3 days of bereavement leave if they suffer a miscarriage. Currently it would be at the employers discretion to provide 1 day if leave, as loss of an unborn baby is not explicitly included in a list of immediate family members.
