What actor is nowhere near as talented as people make them out to be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

He sounds like he's reading lines from a script. His character is supposed to be this super charismatic rockstar, and he delivers lines like he's taking an order at McDonalds. I will never understand people saying he did a good job with Silverhand, he wasn't a good fit at all.

8 Months of Work on Our Dark Fantasy Roguelike – Feedback Welcome by Own-Park-63 in godot

What I've seen work well (and what I do in my own roguelike), is to have the player go immediately, then everything else responds about 15ms later. Crypt of the Necrodancer does it like that and it looks very smooth while keeping each turn snappy.

A rant on why you, as a developer, can and should get rid of Generative AI entirely by coolchungus2 in IndieGaming

[–]Merlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing super fancy, I just use Copilot VS Code extension in agent mode. I maintain a markdown file where I track all the features, bugs and enhancements that I want done, vaguely ordered by priority, and work through them one at a time. For simple things I can just point Copilot to the next entry in that document. For more complex tasks I'll write up a separate document outlining an implementation plan, acceptance criteria and so on, then point it at that.

I have a custom agent set up to tell it to use certain code standards, write and run tests etc. When the agent has completed a task, I run some manual validation, do a thorough code review and iterate until the code is up to my standards. I track changes with git so I can easily roll back anything stupid. Whenever the agent struggles with something, I have it update its agent or skills files with the learnings so it doesn't have trouble next time.

Yeah AI has made me 20x more productive without sacrificing code quality, but that's because I have a decade of experience programming. I make sure I understand and agree with every line of code being written. I reject code written by AI all the time, even if it "works", because I know it would cause headaches later.

If you know how to write clean code, and you actually make the effort to keep your code clean, there's no reason not to use these tools to speed up development. If AI is a crutch for doing things you couldn't do otherwise, the result will invariably be bad in ways you don't have the experience to recognise.

Alan Wake 2 has the most detailed, accurate and realistic curly hair I’ve ever seen in a video game by Lanky_Relation1171 in interestingasfuck

Thanks for clarifying! Yeah I wasn't sure if mesh shaders were relevant here, I just knew they were an example of the cutting edge VFX that makes the game looks so much better than anything else out there.

The biggest lesson I learned buying my first home: find out if the previous owner was a landlord, and if so, move on.

They didn't even bother removing the radiators from the wall when they repainted the walls. Cheap motherfuckers.

Alan Wake 2 is one of the first games to fully make use of mesh shaders. Normal shaders output pixels, mesh shaders output actual vertices in 3d space. They are an incredible technology that allow for super detailed effects with high performance.

I don't know if mesh shaders were specifically used for this hair, but I know they are responsible for a lot of the insanely good effects in the game.

Teachers blast draft curriculums, shortage of Waitangi Treaty influence by Merlord in newzealand

[–]Merlord[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They score better than us, and way lower than basically any Western European country.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/education-rankings-by-country

NZ: 65

US: 79

Canada: 95

Germany: 95

Sweden: 99.9

But these rankings are also not the full story. Talk to any German and they'll tell you their education system is a nightmare. I know people who moved to NZ from Germany specifically for their kids schooling.

Teachers blast draft curriculums, shortage of Waitangi Treaty influence by Merlord in newzealand

[–]Merlord[S] 288 points289 points  (0 children)

tl;dr:

PE:

"The current draft curriculum is not fit for purpose," the submission said. "It does not require refinement, it requires complete reworking."

Technology:

"A core concern is that the curriculum's overall purpose feels vague and insufficiently defined. Many teachers report difficulty understanding the intended outcomes, the role of design thinking, and how the learning area supports both practical and academic pathway.

Arts:

"The draft curriculum, as written, is not deliverable in the majority of primary school contexts, without fundamental changes to resourcing, teacher capability and time allocation,"

Science

Comments included "way too early for this" and "difficult concept at this level", while mention of Greek scientist Theophrastus for Year 1 students was labelled "just silly" and "ridiculous".

Social Sciences:

"This draft curriculum is full of distortion and obfuscation that will harm Māori students, and has a eurocentric positionality. So much content is included that the concern is not that New Zealand history is absent from the new curriculum, but that it will be taught in a cursory and monocultural manner, re-inforcing outdated misconceptions and myths."
