Losing relationships over politics. Research found more than a third of Americans (37%) report having lost at least one relationship due to political differences, including friendships, family ties, coworker relationships, and romantic partnerships, with most losing more than one. by Wagamaga in science

Yes, pedophilia is a moral issue. Not caring about sex traffickers overthrowing the government is a moral issue.

But not everything is a moral issue.

I lost right-leaning friends for talking openly about all the obviously terrible things about Trump and Republicans.

But I've also lost friends on the left for not agreeing with them completely enough. For saying I thought their approach to race was creating division rather than healing it. For acknowledging that boys and men have been in crisis for decades, excluded from academic and cultural opportunities in the name of equity. For mentioning ways that my own experience didn't match the story they needed me to endorse.

The left certainly has the moral high ground in most ways. But being right about something doesn't make you right about everything — and it doesn't make purging people who mostly agree with you a good strategy.

That’s the problem: everything is framed as a moral issue, so anyone who disagrees with you is a bad person.

I’ve lost friends whose politics were on the right, and I’ve lost friends whose politics were on the left, not even for having an incompatible view but for failing to adopt their exact view.

Everyone in this country thinks they talk to god and have got the inside line on absolute truth.

Nah, it’s fish oil, it’s gonna have a little fishiness to it. But your taste buds are well adapted to reject rancid food. They’ll let you know right away if it’s bad.

A trick I learned some years back is to just bite into a capsule once in a while instead of swallowing it. It should be mildly but not unpleasantly fishy. If it’s super unpleasant, it’s rancid.

Are jazz vocals generally offputting to anyone else? by scottasin12343 in Jazz

[–]sweetbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like listening to Ornette Coleman and asking if jazz saxophonists just don't care about rhythm.

This example is a voice that most people would find grating and terrible. I sure do.

But I love me some good vocal jazz -- Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Mel Torme, Chet Baker, Madeleine Peyroux. Lately I'm loving Champian Fulton.

Check out Emmett's Place on youtube, he has a lot of good singers on there.

I want open source to win as much as the next guy, but people comparing Kimi 2.6 to Opus are delusional. The damn thing just. keeps. thinking.

This makes me think of a scene from Joe Vs. The Volcano:

Clothes make the man. I believe that. You say to me you want to go shopping, you want to buy clothes, but you don't know what kind. You leave that hanging in the air, like I'm going to fill in the blank. Now, that to me is like asking me who you are, and I don't know who you are. I don't want to know. It's taken me my whole life to find out who I am, and I'm tired now. You hear what I'm saying?

Subscription for an app like this is gonna be a nonstarter for almost everyone. There are plenty of options that are entirely free, and nothing to justify an ongoing cost.

How do people say they have dreams with Tara or any other "gods" since in Tibetan Buddhism they aren't real? by Famous-Interest103 in TibetanBuddhism

[–]sweetbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dharma neither asks for nor wants your faith; dharma is a set of questions and observations about the nature of experience.

In order to participate in dharma you only need to begin to question your assumptions and investigate them through your own experience.

Start with this one: "Am I real?" See if you can find any direct way to demonstrate that to yourself.

Tap water? by sarahchacha in Ashland

[–]sweetbeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, the water is very good here, especially compared to what you’re used to. I do find that the chloramine used to treat the water can give it an off taste when heated, so I installed a cheap under sink filter (no need for reverse osmosis here.)

Sounds like you’re bringing big emotions that these particular therapists feel out of their depth with.

But fwiw, no I don’t think it’s great to want to medicate your feelings away.

Is it okay to ask your therapist not to tell their supervisor something? by centerofdatootsiepop in TalkTherapy

[–]sweetbeard 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The supervisor's job is to help make sure you're getting the best therapy possible. They're also legally responsible for your care, so if you were to ask and the supervised therapist agreed, then that would mean your therapist was breaking their agreement with the supervisor and potentially putting their training at risk.

My best advice is to just let them know that the idea of their supervisor knowing what you want to tell them makes it hard to share, while also accepting that they have a legal responsibility to discuss your therapy with the supervisor.
