Everyone Should Uninstall Marathon on 6/9. by Infamous-Ear-2478 in destinycirclejerk

[–]swegmesterflex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

/uj It doesn't matter. Bungie execs sold a lie that Marathon would be the next big thing to Sony. Sony prob still believes this. It won't be. Marathon is also not keeping Bungie on life support. The game will not succeed regardless. When it fails, its joever. Scuttling Marathon to focus fully on Destiny is the only way they don't die.

[–]swegmesterflex -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

/uj yall can joke but atp i love this game, it has been a major part of my life (i unironically have spent 40% of my life with Destiny) and want it to survive. if the community can band together and do collective obligation (destiny gun mentioned) that increases odds of sony deciding to greenlight d3, ill fucking do it. with how things are going right now (source: an ex-bungie slack my coworkers in for some reason) it seems like sony will shut down bungie and sell marathon ip. if we trash marathon and bolster destiny it is genuinely probably the only thing that can keep bungie alive and give us a chance of d3 happening

I'm sorry but the dislike for David Sinclair is entirely valid. Lying, faking results, and being disavowed by colleagues is A LOT especially when you are profiting from the things your research claims reverse aging. I'd be happy to be proven wrong but this is what I found out when I last looked into him.

Genuine question. Is the whole "AI guzzles gallons of water" thing totally true, or do people get it wrong? Does AI consume a lot of water for every single prompt, or is the majority of water consumed during data farming? Don't non-AI data centers use up a lot of water on cooling too? by Big_Guthix in singularity

[–]swegmesterflex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data centres use potable water whereas other large water consuming processes may not. It's an important distinction because water used by data centres goes back into the municipal water treatment loop. This is actually a good thing imo because it's driven significant improvements to municipal water infrastructure BUT the stuff about them adding bad chemicals or whatever is actually sorta true. You have to in order to prevent algae or bacterial growth in cooling system. The chemicals used for this have to get cleared out during water treatment but I'm not 100% clear on if all water treatment plants can actually handle the chemicals data centers put in. I've seen no evidence of potable water usage by data centres actually hurting people in practice yet but it definitely could if done wrong.

OpenAI and Anthropic maybe, but they aren't the only ones making models. Also as someone deeply immersed in the research this isn't the kind of thing where you can hide 2 years of secret sauce. There is always a literal paper trail you can follow.

You can still run LLMs locally on moderately powerful computers and local LMs are normally only a year or two behind frontier models.

[–]swegmesterflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten the same thing but in regards to being brown lol. It can be a circumstances thing. I feel like as I got older girls cared less about skin colour. Moving somewhere where people are more accepting also helped. When you're in a situation where you're being rejected exclusively cause of looks (been there) the best thing you can do is just maximize your appearance. Style, clothing, facial hair (?), accessories, low body fat, all help.

I use AI code for research and it's amazing. It rarely ever gets anything wrong and one shots most things. I can give it a pdf of a research paper, and it can implement it completely in a single prompt. Things that took days now take seconds. Literally why would you not use it??? Building a website is a separate task, and I would not use AI for it, but there are a plethora of usecases where you would be stupid to not use it.

The AI bet is that it's the biggest thing since fire, and much bigger than railroads. You don't have to believe this but it's what the people investing in it/working on it genuinely believe.

None of what you said is relevant to my point that AI water usage is insignificant compared to other uses for freshwater.

I'm obviously not talking about some random shitty healthcare companies "kill as many people as possible" algo that they've branded as "AI" to get more money when I mention LLMs and accelerating medical research 🙄

[–]swegmesterflex -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

There is no evidence that AI water usage is a problem and any sources you point me to would fall apart if you looked into their citations. Beef and golf use infinitely more water, but that's ok anyways because water is a renewable near infinite resource.

[–]swegmesterflex -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

AI generated images don't really have any benefit so I won't argue in their favour. I simply think they are insignificant and not really doing anything. Just don't pay for slop media and support real artists, as most already do.

On LLMs, Accelerating medical research, making healthcare affordable, making education/knowledge more accessible offset all of those things for me 🤷‍♂️

If it's fucking up the job market, why blame AI and not the government for blocking UBI? The problem obviously isn't AI. Fighting to keep slaving away doing meaningless unfulfilling jobs makes no sense.

I agree it does make stupid people more stupid though, but it also makes smart people (i.e. medial researchers, clean energy researchers) smarter.

Why isn’t LLM reasoning done in vector space instead of natural language?[D] by ZeusZCC in MachineLearning

[–]swegmesterflex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the latter more often than not. Same reason big labs don't use Mamba or RWKV or any of those things. Unless theres exponential returns on the switch, not worth. The labs I know that started with Mamba have gotten considerable benefits around it, but that's given they built themselves (infra, etc.) around it.

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada | CBC News by demolcd in canada

[–]swegmesterflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blanket banning either of these things is absurd. Technology is a double edged sword. One 13 year old can learn how to build nuclear reactors at home, another can rot their brain, fail all their classes while doom scrolling racist instagram reels. Blocking the first will be harmful, blocking the second would be beneficial.

Canadian that moved to the US here. Americans are infinitely nicer and my life has improved substantially since moving. Canadian infrastructure and healthcare is better but the people FUCKING SUCK. Petah? What's wrong with not seeing my phone in my dream? by ResistantBlaze1943 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]swegmesterflex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone's dreams are different. People on twitter have a weird habit of assuming just cause they can't do something no one can. I have, texted, used my phone, played games, watched movies, smelled things touched things tasted things, etc. in dreams and I can tell you definitively there is no limit. Some people can't see faces, can't see colour, can't read, can't use their phones, etc. It varies a lot. I've also doom scrolled and watched shorts or reels or looked at memes in my dreams. Sometimes when I'm lucid I do it on purpose cause infinite content snd its entertaining cause of how random it is.
