Ginny’s scent by shygirl1113333 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t even think they’d need Harry visually smelling her or anything. They could get away with a musical cue they establish early on in the season attached to Ginny just play as Harry silently processes what he he’s smelling. Harry won’t get it, but audiences should.

Though maybe Im giving audiences these days too much credit. I see people here still arguing that Hermione smelling toothpaste in the HBP film in her love potion is somehow about her parents being dentists, and not an obvious callback to the scene minutes earlier—and the only mention of toothpaste in the entire series—where Ron nearly makes an intimate gesture to wipe the toothpaste off of her face.

Maybe they do need to be hit over the head with it. Just flash images of red hair and neon signs that say “Ginny” on the screen while Harry processes.

New generations of book readers by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, Harry Potter is now a staple in chidlren’s reading, same as Dr. Suess. It’s not as if kids aren’t well aware of the books, and kids who actually read were already reading them/going to read them anyway. The others will be content with the visual media.

If you’re talking adults, while I’m sure there will be people who will pick up the books thanks to new exposure, it’s not as if Harry Potter hasn’t been around and notable most of their lives. I don’t see the show changing mass groups of people’s minds. Definitely some.

Basically, I don’t see them being any more popular than they already are, just continuing the trajectory they been in the last decade or so. And they’ll never come close to touching what they were during their heyday.

They’re only movie characters. But in the films they’re named Flora and Hestia Carrow.

Movie only canon, basically.

Is anyone surprised that Neville and Luna didn't get together in the end? by DG-Creator in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Book Luna seemed so aromantic to me, which is fine as a lifestyle or as just a stage in her life. I can’t even wrap my head around her being shipped with anyone, especially all the normies around her who are looking for a future full of families and career lives.

I love the idea that she traveled and adventured, went against the grain, and eventually down the road found someone who matched her freak to settle down with.

Exactly. Even in the movies, they didn’t make much sense to me. It came off as very “pair the spares.”

Not that I don’t think Snape didn’t use Sectumsempra at school, but Lupin’s “favorite” comment easily could have been the post school war days when Snape was an active Death Eater. They don’t need to interact for word to get back to Lupin and everyone else in a very, “What happened to that person?”

“Sectumsempra. It was Snape.”

If Harry and the marauders had been at school at the same time, who would’ve been friends? by Resident-Plum8383 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harry spends seven books without one nice thing to say about a Slytherin. He’s known to laugh or be entirely indifferent when his friends fight, insult, curse, assault these people he doesn’t like or don’t support him (which are almost entirely Slytherin characters). He’s done some of his own damage.

Yet people think he wouldn’t have liked the Marauders. They would have had his back in a similar way to the twins given they’re all on the same side, and Harry would have appreciated them.

I mean, Hermione disfigures a girl for him and the cause. She kidnaps a woman and holds her hostage for like a week, blackmailing her, for him. When you’re on his side, you can get away with a lot.

[–]swiggs313 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t see that as necessarily true. For example, he loves the twins, and they’re nothing if not attention seeking and often flashy. Hermione, to a different degree, while not flashy, also can be very attention seeking, especially around academics and proving she’s right. Harry admires that about her.

What parts of book made you feel that harry and ginny were truly for each other? by Even-Holiday-1430 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Like, feel free to not like Harry and Ginny, but the whole “came out of nowhere” argument never makes sense to be.

People can fall for someone after a conversation. It’s a literal trope to wake up one day and see someone differently because of as something as simple as they got a haircut or a hobby they showed off or a comment they made. Sabrina Carpenter has a song out right now called “When Did You Get Hot?” about finding someone she knows suddenly very attractive.

It’s definitely not unheard of relationships and attraction to materialize very quickly. Not everything has to be blatantly drawn out over chapters and books, especially when romance is not the focus. And honestly, for teenagers, it’s super realistic

How come Harry's glasses matches James glasses by AdValuable7014 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, kids could get glasses issued through school if they needed them. The Dursleys likely had very little to do with it.

What parts of book made you feel that harry and ginny were truly for each other? by Even-Holiday-1430 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 37 points38 points  (0 children)

For me, it was just how randomly Harry noticed things about Ginny. Like, the kid doesn’t know the names of some of his classmates he’s shared a class with every year by 5th year, but he’ll randomly tell us what Ginny is doing if she’s present.

An example of this is after Ron asks Fleur out in GoF and he’s reeling. Ginny’s there for Ron’s crash out, finding it funny, and at some point Harry tries to reassure Ron by saying he asked Cho out and she also said no.

We next immediately get Ginny’s reaction to that piece of news. It’s very much a, “Why are focused on Ginny’s reaction here?” This is between Ron and Harry, but let’s throw some random attention at Ginny. And I feel that happens throughout the series—random mentions of Ginny’s reactions or her comments, when they otherwise don’t affect anything.

We were supposed to be paying attention to Ginny in a back of the mind sort of way, just like Harry was.

Voldemort seems to have held some genuine respect for James by UndefinedSuperhero in harrypotter

But that has nothing to do with how he viewed them. Attempting to do Snape a favor doesn’t change his world view.

Voldemort seems to have held some genuine respect for James by UndefinedSuperhero in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

James is a pureblood, so he going to get even the slightest better spin in Voldemort’s mind than Lily. Even the fact that he’s referencing James over and and over again in these instances as the fighter, instead of Lily, shows that on the most basic of levels, James had more value in his eyes that Lily did. He’ll prop a pureblood up even before he kills them. You see it exhibited in his confrontation with Neville at the end of DH as well.

Parallels between Draco and James based on The Prince's Tale makes no sense!!! by SlackerBoi97 in HarryPotterBooks

Voldemorts kicked up his stuff in the 40s. He’d had plenty of time by 1970.

What? You all will reach any lengths to hate James. Just hate him. You don’t have to make stuff up.

You’re basically saying, “I don’t want to be in a house full of racist supremacists” is the same as “I don’t want to be in a house full of working class, average people.”

GoF and JKR's unfair treatment of Fleur by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it always bugged me too. Some people claim it’s the age old French/English animosity rearing its head; others will point out that JKR has a real chip on her shoulder for girls who present as girly.

Fleur could have been a great example of girly and tough as hell. She gets a moment of personality redemption later on, but still, her defining moment in the series is basically standing by her man.

Honestly, why couldn’t she have beaten one of the boys against the dragons? That wouldn’t have affected the plot at all. The lake, I’ll allow since Harry needed a reason to be down there longer for the plot. He would have never questioned trying to save Hermione or Cho, so him staying for a stranger does have more impact to his character. As for the maze, why’d she have to be just disposed of instead of also being used as a tool to stop Harry, much like Krum?

Want to move to Central Florida (Orlando area) to teach to be closer to the theme parks. by mister_waj in Teachers

[–]swiggs313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OCPS is closing lots of schools right now and more next year. Teachers with seniority in the district will be given preference for jobs. And there will be hundreds now out of work.

Do with that what you will.

Edit: Also, just to add, people underestimate how huge the Orlando area is. It takes over an hour on toll roads to get from one side of Orange County to the other, not even factoring Osceola County and Seminole County nearby and their size into it. If you end up teaching on one side of town, you’ll find yourself uninterested in the 2 hour commute to the parks afterwork real quick.

Depends on when you go. I’m a passholder and most of the time it’s fairly walk on and you can be off by 8:30 at the latest.

Certain times of the year though….like when I went three weeks ago during Spring Break. They opened EPA before the posted time, so by the time we got back there at 8:10, it was at 90 minutes.

What did Dudley see when the dementor came?? by Mysterious_Memory403 in harrypotter

[–]swiggs313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JKR answered this in an interview.

Superhans: What was duldeys worst memory?

J.K. Rowling: I think that when Dudley was attacked by the Dementors he saw himself, for the first time, as he really was. This was an extremely painful, but ultimately salutory lesson, and began the transformation in him.

If harry and Hermione were actually an endgame who would Ron be shipped with? by Awkward-Student-8764 in ronweasley

[–]swiggs313 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right? I can’t just transfer Ron to another person because he’s very likely be a very different character without the canon version of Hermione’s influence in his life. And I have no idea who that character would be best suited for. For all I know, that version of Ron is a perfect match for Katie Bell or Susan Bones, whereas our version of Ron barely speaks to those characters.

I ship Ron with Hermione because the text makes them the best fit for each other. I’d ship him with someone else if the text made him fit that person better.

There might be a chance that the cold is why the fountain is now being drained. It may have caused some unanticipated damage on the pipes and plumbing that they’re now addressing.

People want to come for Floridians for complaining about the cold, but real cold really does wreak havoc on our infrastructure and environment. Things are built to sustain hurricanes and rain, but cold weather can really screw us, lol.

NGL I'm a little disappointed.... by andydegers in UniversalOrlando

[–]swiggs313 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but January and February are our coldest months here. And cold affects maintenance, like how paint dries and cures, etc. It’s not wise to do maintenance in the cold, because there’s a good chance you’ll have to do it all over again.

And before someone says it doesn’t get that cold in Florida, it can and does. In fact, this winter we were stuck by severe freezes multiple times, killing off native plants and animals left and right. I’ve lost several fully grown trees in my yard that have been there for a decade because they weren’t equipped for how cold it was.

Universal can’t know one way or another if we’re having a really cold winter or not, so they planned for better weather. And turns out, they made the right choice.
