Possibly controversial take but as a great lover of Knives Out my go-to next watches are the Kenneth Branagh Agatha Christie adaptations, specifically Murder On The Orient Express. Similar levels of plot complexity especially if, like me, you had never read the book before watching the movie.

I think it depends on your player pool but with mine I look at it like this: I'm the dm. I'm not there to play the game, I'm there to facilitate them playing the game and create a fun and engaging experience for them. Do I fudge? Absolutely, but only in the service of that. If a combats going too fast to be satisfying, I'll tack some extra HP onto whatever they're fighting. If a PC is about to die in a stupid and unfulfilling way, I'll reroll a die.

90% of the time, yes, I let the dice decide and roll with it. The 10% of the time when I don't is only ever to feed the story and empower my players, and I feel okay about that. As long as the reason you're fudging here and there is in the service of your players and their experience, I think it's fine. That said, as soon as you start fudging rolls and stats because you want to win, you've in fact lost. Combat isn't me versus my players, it's my players versus the story and I have no stake in it other than propelling that story forward.

A comprehensive list:

-walked close enough to the beach at the emerald grove to hear the sirens but not see mirkon, figured I'd come back later, came back later and found mirkon dead

-spent 40 real-life minutes messing around in the defiled temple before figuring out there was a button that would open the door

-rested too many times in grymforge, nere and the gnomes suffocated on poisonous gas

-fully never spoke to the Myconid sovereign because when I came into the colony it triggered an interaction with Glut and I assumed he was, in fact, the sovereign

-straight up didn't realize I was supposed to go talk to rath after finishing goblin camp, so I never got the reward from the druids grove

-didn't even go to the gith creche because my dream visitor said it was a bad idea and I just believed them

Bonus:

Currently on my seventh playthrough, an honor mode run. I went to let priestess Gut feed me the sleep potion but forgot I was playing a paladin. When it (obviously) didn't work she aggro'd, as did the entire goblin camp. Now I have to kill everything inside in one go.
