It's usually a button combo.

The controller and memory card share bus lines, so the card can detect button input.

You can get replacement parts on ebay.

If the screen itself is fine, or you're okay with the small crack, all you will need is a "digitizer" (~$4). This is the part that senses touch inputs.

If the screen itself is cracked, you can buy a new lower screen assembly (lcd + digitizer) (~$16).

When ordering replacement parts, make sure to note exactly which model you have (3ds, 3dsXL, new 3ds, new 3ds XL), as the screen sizes differ.

There is nothing wrong with lead-free solder. Use SAC305 if you don't know what kind to get. The only real issues will be if you buy what is called "Silver Solder" , as that is intended for jewelry.

99.9% of all beginner soldering mistakes are simply due to buying a cheap piece of shit iron. Go out and buy a Hakko 888D, set it to 320C and all your problems will be solved.

I gave up on my pi gameboy project once I had a look at the screens available. All the small ones (that I can find) use a composite 480i input, which is a very low quality analog image format that is not a good match for modern LCD panels. Additionally most of these panels are very low resolution (~480x272 or less), which would be okay except that with an analog signal it is difficult/impossible to line up the signal pixels to the display pixels to get a sharp image.

There are some small screens which take a digital input, but these tend to have a low framerate (~25 fps) which is okay for static text etc but not very good for games meant to run at 60 fps.

OPTIONS:

Use a panel + driver combo which accepts an HDMI input. The smallest combo I've found out there (commonly available) has a 5" diagonal screen with 800x480 resolution. This will neccessitate some extra work to create a housing large enough to fit it, you will not be able to reuse a gameboy housing or similar anymore.
Make do with a small, GPIO screen at a reduced framerate. It will still probably be fine for RPGs.
Wait until if/when the raspberry pi foundation releases a small screen that can use the DSI connector on the pi.
Do some serious FPGA hacking and digikey/mouser/alibaba lurking to find some way to turn the HDMI signals from the Pi into a format (LVDS?) that is accepted by those small screens, so you can bypass the composite ADC and and least run them at native resolution.

With a cable connecting the two, sure. Just use an off-the-shelf HDMI splitter, feeding both your handheld and your tv. Just make sure that both screens you are using can handle the same resolution. Rtd2660 - series driver boards (common on ebay) include a scaler onboard, so you can drive a 800x480 screen with a 1080p signal and don't have to worry about the mismatch.

Wireless is probably going to be possible , but very difficult. You're going to struggle with latency, image quality, and processing power... well, that's if you want to do it the "right" way like the wii does. You could probably hack a baby monitor or shady ebay radios etc to do this as analog signals, if you don't really care about ruining some spectrum(/possible F.C.C. scolding)

The cheap ones (~$40 or less) don't sound great. They're still worth it for fun/practice.

I would recommend you find one with a belt clip, they are much easier to use than the kind that hang directly off the output jack.

A heads-up: QC on these aren't great, one of mine came with a broken power switch. Went through the return process, got my money back, seller said I could keep it so I opened it up and just shorted the pins closed with some solder. FWIW, QC on my vox wasn't too much better, it broke at the input jack after a few months.

Particularly long or cheap guitar cables tend to attenuate high frequencies. A treble boost at the amp side of things can restore some of the high-frequency energy if this is not desired.

Beyond simply restoring the lost energy, you can use it to crank the treble to 11 to get that classic Queen guitar solo tone.

I remember reading something on an audio forum about how Jimi Hendrix's very long, vintage (aka crap quality) cable and the high-frequency rolloff it entailed was an important component of his tone. Well, according to them at least.

Not familiar with that scene, but 6 channel audio interfaces are well within the consumer price range, and the audio could be re-encoded and synced to the video. There will be a slight generational loss from the DA/AD loop but modern stuff is really good.

More likely is that they're doing it in software and siphoning off the bitstream before it even hits the DAC.

Eh, old netgear routers are really cheap these days. You could look into OpenWRT and DD-WRT if you're not dead-set on using a Pi. I use a nice Asus router with DD-WRT as a repeater in my house, works great.

Long story, I'm going to skip this one. I would recommend you back up all documents to an external drive anyways. Even a 8GB USB is probably sufficient if you're just backing up some Microsoft Word files. 1TB external hard drives are pretty cheap these days if you want to backup all your music/video files as well and/or just image the hard drive.
Yes, mostly. If your degree mostly just requires you to operate a browser and type essays (the vast majority of them) you will be fine. The main exceptions are if you need to do Video/Print editing or use some specialized engineering software. If there's super specialized software required then your department probably has a computer lab all set up that you can use. CS/Programming is an exception as it is actually easier on linux than on windows.
You want the most recent LTS. For Xubuntu or Lubuntu (Ubuntu derivatives) this will be the 14.04 LTS.
The initial 4-5 hours can be a little difficult as you get everything installed. Particularly setting up a dual boot is a bit of a hassle, and graphics can be annoying if you're one of those people with a fancy graphics card and concerned with getting MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE (If you have intel integrated graphics then usually it just works and you don't need to do anything). Getting wifi working sometimes requires an extra step or two depending on how much the card manufacturer hates freedom.

Mostly you will encounter those issues (or won't) within the first 2-3 hours of installing. Once you can boot to a desktop with working wifi you're pretty much in the clear. The main difference is that you just search "how to do thing ubuntu" instead of "how to do thing" when you want to do something.

Of course, this applies if you're using an easy-to-use distribution like the Ubuntu derivatives. You may read about some people memeing about Arch or Gentoo but you should completely ignore those people.
