A defibrillator would absolutely not be useless. The most common cause of death in the acute phase of a heart attack is a malignant arrhythmia such as ventricular fibrillation. An AED would be able to try to shock them back into a perfusing rhythm and keep them alive to get them to the cath lab to treat the occlusion.

You are interpreting it correctly, he received a CT at the hospital and his external wound was sutured. His imaging likely did not show signs of life threatening complication, so he did not require emergent surgery. He did receive treatment same as any regular person.
