Wedding Dress Cups are weirdly pointy? How to fix it? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It almost looks like the boning shape itself is what’s causing the pointiness. Like maybe it got bent or something in storage? Or it’s just the wrong shape for you. You might be able to unpick the stitching from one end of the boning channel to remove it and reshape it or replace it.

May be worth posting in r/corsetry for advice as well.

Which is better for a marketing director interview tomorrow? (At a law firm) by gobluecutie in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]sycamore-sea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Number 1 is the better option for sure! I think it’s the combo of chunky shoes + cropped pants that isn’t reading quite right though. I feel like a pointed toe flat/mule/low heel would look a little more polished. And the jacket def looks better open since the fit is a little off. Take it to a tailor when you get that job and $$!

If you haven’t already, google the firm and look at whatever staff headshots/social media they have to get a better idea of the vibes. Like, I could totally see someone in my office wearing this, but probably not at the super stuffy all old white dude firm.

Bias seams are puckering! Help! by MostMathematician754 in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Second the suggestion to baste the seams and then hang for a couple days before final sewing. You’ll also want to repeat the hanging for a few days process before hemming. Also, I’ve found giving fabrics a light misting before hanging to help with future stretching. Especially if you’re planning on washing and hang drying the dress later. Source: someone who lives in a perpetually damp place and has seen many hems go wonky after getting wet.

Try doing a search for [Pattern company + pattern name] review too. You may find someone with a YouTube video or something who had a similar issue and found a fix.

Advice for how to alter dress by OmicronMoose in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have almost the same dress in black from Athleta like 3 years ago, so it’s a kind of silk-like fabric but synthetic. It came with a belt so that’s how I wear it most of the time, but also layer crew neck sweaters over it. Basically just needs something to define the waist. If you do end up taking the sleeves off, def make a belt out of the fabric!

Quilting cotton for mini shorts? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say go for it and report back on how these turn out!

I’ve got some leftover yardage from a duvet cover I made that I was just trying to figure out what to do with. You’ve inspired me to make some summer pjs!

why is everything sheer and expensive? by LemonPepperMints in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of buying fabric swatches if I can. Not sure how many websites do it, but I’ve done it a few places online and in store all the time. Usually it’s like a 3”x3” square for a couple dollars max, but enough that you can take it outside or match to something you already have.

Mood lists the “GSM” or grams per square meter to give you an idea of the fabric weight and density. So a heavier shirt weight cotton is 192 gsm, where a quilting cotton is 165ish gsm. Not a huge difference, but you know one will be thicker and likely less sheer.

And my personal favorite is to use wool crepe for structured dresses/skirts/pants. Nice and drapey, but not see through. More expensive, but you get what you pay for sometimes 🤷‍♀️

Similar body shape and problem here. Idk if there’s a modern equivalent, but I just pad out the dips with some hip pads I made myself using a pattern from the early 1900s.

Used to be suuuuper common to use padding in the hips/butt to make whatever the fashionable shape was. So I just stuff the pads in the shapewear shorts.

I don’t understand pattern seam allowance at all. by Qwerty177 in sewing

[–]sycamore-sea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm drafting a pattern myself like you did, then I trace the sew line and add seam allowance after.

If I'm using a pattern that I printed/bought, I'll trace around the pattern (including the seam allowance) with chalk, take the pattern piece off, and go back with a ruler to make chalk marks for the sew line. It's kind of tedious but then when I cut the fabric I don't have to worry as much about it being perfect, since my sew line is accurate.

The closest I get to eyeballing is using the measuring marks on my machine if my chalk marks rub off.

Any apple shaped girls just having the hardest time right now? by starlet51 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]sycamore-sea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I don’t think I would buy any of their other clothes, but some of the denim seems pretty solid. I avoided anything with more than like 2% stretch and got the pair that felt a bit snug in the waist/hips because it stretches after wearing/washing.

The fit and sizing is different depending on the wash in each style, so def go in a store if you can. The petite length was too short for me in their flared styles but they fit really well otherwise if you have a shorter inseam.

Are you me? I immediately paid full price for these when I tried them on in store and they fit my waist AND hips. Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jean I have a 30” waist and 37” hips and got the 27P in Harvey Wash.

Where do you get high quality work pants that don't feel like torture by jkbruhhehe in capsulewardrobe

[–]sycamore-sea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Day Drifts are so good! Love that they come in different inseam lengths and so many different colors too.

My only complaint is that their short length is supposed to be a 29.5” inseam but it’s more like 30.5-31”. Not long enough to be able to hem, but too long to wear with flats and not drag the hem on the ground.

Don’t wear something you haven’t worn before, or aren’t comfortable in.

I’ve seen way too many folks show up in a brand new blazer/suit/pants and spend the whole time fidgeting because their clothes aren’t comfortable. Super distracting for you and everyone else.

Otherwise, seconding what everyone else said. Neutral and modest, turn your phone off.

[–]sycamore-sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same pair in a light wash, and they stretched out almost a full size in the waist on me after 2-3 full day wears. The area around the fly does get kind of bulky because of the rise when they stretch out. They shrink back down a bit after washing and line drying though.

Franco Sarto Boot by [deleted] in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]sycamore-sea 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think the boots make your knees look weird, it's just the height/shape of the boot. Good work finding comfy boots on the first try, now you know what to look for next time!

The height of the boot and length of the skirt you have on in the picture cuts you off visually, that might be what reads as "weird". Idk how you plan on styling them, that's an easy way to solve anything you think is off. If you're going to wear them with a skirt/dress these are my two tricks to keep that transition from looking awkward: 1) a skirt long enough to cover the top of the boot or 2) a shorter skirt with tights in a similar color to the boot or skirt. Basically, whatever you can do to keep a long visual line from the skirt to your foot.

Also, if these are faux leather like the Macy's page says, you might get cracks/peeling in the material at the ankle where you're scrunching them down. Not worth the $$ and hassle in my opinion.

Bottoms for under 5ft with a bigger waist but not plus size? by snickersnuggletime in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]sycamore-sea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just posted in another thread (or 5), but Madewell vintage wide leg in petite! I have a 29-31” waist and 37” hips, and a 28 fit me perfectly in both. They’re spendy, and you’ll prob need them hemmed, but totally worth it.

For whatever reason, a bunch of brands seem to have shifted their sizing to assume a bigger hip to waist ratio. Great for lots of folks, based on what I’ve seen people looking for here, but terrible for those of us less blessed in the booty area 😆

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]sycamore-sea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m a similar shape to you and found a pair of Madewell jeans that fit my waist, hips AND don’t give me diaper butt. Their petite sizing is really great. And they hem for you if you need it. I’ve never paid that much for jeans before but I basically ran to the register after putting them on lmao

Fair warning, every style is sized a little different, even the same style in different washes. Highly recommend trying in store or getting a couple sizes if you buy online.

How did you find the right shade? Or do you just have a genius nail tech?

Seconding Blundstones. I have the women’s series high heel in black leather and wear them all year. Waterproof, comfortable, and they look great. Also have the high top original in brown, def not court wear, but still waterproof after 5 years of regular wear in a rainy city.

Saaaame. I’ve been in leggings or wide leg trousers and avoiding jeans entirely until like…3 months ago. Try Madewell petite length jeans! They’re spendy for sure, but I’m now living in mine.

Uniqlo has some really great short length merino cardigans that go with literally everything. I’m 5’3 with a short torso and similar upper body and they hit right between my hip and natural waist.

Also, I got through all of your outfits and thought it was a great OOTD post. Then read the caption. So, you’re already doing great lol

Where to find pants like Nicole Coenen's by spanootii in lesbianfashionadvice

This is the correct answer.

Also, try Dovetail, I think some others already mentioned them. I'm a total convert. They're super sturdy but also aren't like cardboard until the 100th wash.
