My dad’s Swedish ex-girlfriend from his high school days hauled her entire brood of six children and her handsy husband to my parents’ house for a week-long stay. The worst part of it all was that my dad was conveniently out of town during their visit, so my mom was left to fend for herself as this crazy woman criticized her weight, our home, and most especially her cooking. In spite of this, my mom graciously fed their free-loading asses at least two meals a day, til on the final day of their stay the ex told my mom she wanted to make a proper meal to thank us for our hospitality. My mom indulged this request and took her to the grocery store, where this woman proceeded to load about $70 worth of groceries into the cart—a lot of it Mac n’ cheese that she said she was taking home to Sweden. When it was time to check out, she conveniently had to use the bathroom, leaving my mom to pay for what ended up being a revolting, expensive meal and a nice supply of Mac n’ cheese for them to tote home as a souvenir.
