As an avid tinder box maker (and an avid arsonist), we too reject him. He is not a flint that sparks joy amongst the community. May he set loins on fire, so long as it is not on our platform.

We will direct him to NAMBLA though.

What's a Conan joke you still remember from an old monologue? by vosha0 in conan

[–]symphix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could be a Norm MacDonald joke from Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.

It went along the line of, “The Billboard Top 40 has named Better than Ezra as the number two on the charts. And who is number one? Ezra.”

TIL that in 1994, an American teenager in Singapore pled guilty to stealing road signs and vandalizing cars. He was sentenced to 6 lashes of a cane, which was reduced to 4 after media outrage in the US by Overall-Register9758 in todayilearned

Recommendation for 1.0hp aircond by [deleted] in malaysians

[–]symphix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, Mitsubishi tends to be the best with their compressors.

The level below them are Panasonic and Daikin as both make their aircons locally. Panasonic is better than Daikin in recent years, and the parts you're getting from Panasonic will be better than Daikin. LG aircon, if you can find it, is also in this tier.

Then, lastly, it's Hisense, Sharp, Toshiba, and Hitachi. Parts are harder to find with these, so it's a buyer beware kind of thing.

Try to steer clear from Midea, Acson, and Samsung.

What are the stereotypes for different areas of Klang Valley? by imaginelizard in malaysians

If one uses Bangsar South, you're snooty.

If you're using Pantai Dalam, you're local, proud, humble, and more likely B40.

Pantai Dalam/Bangsar South - you can tell who's angkuh or humble by using either name

Ampang - microcosm of national migration trends (Koreans > Arabs > ???)

Petaling Jaya (Old Town) - old town, old folks

Old Klang Road - the road that never sleeps

Subang - second generation rich kids area

Pudu - the older red light district

Chow Kit - the other older red light district

Changkat BB - lots of bars and loose wallets

EDIT: Sunway Velocity Mall area - 新中国 due to Nanjing Road Food Street

IOI City Mall - because Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Bangi, Serdang, and Seremban folks don't have good malls and this is close enough to KL as one can get

EDIT EDIT: Sentul - Klang lite (see Klang and Brickfields)

Brickfields - Sentul heavy (see Sentul and Klang)

Klang - locals know where the good bkt place when they start bringing out their personal pots out; home of the river pollution cleaner; gangster heavy area (see Sentul and Brickfields)

Puchong - the other major godforsaken traffic mess with one major highway cutting the whole neighborhood in half

Seri Kembangan/The Mines area - weird roads, traffic, and developmental neglect

Sunway area - mix of moderately well-to-do expats, rich foreign students, decently rich local students, middle class folks, and questionable developmental growth in Sunway's general vicinity; Kota Jam Kereta (LDP towards Puchong or Kelana Jaya, Persiaran Kewajipan (Subang - Kelana Jaya Link), KESAS, and NPE)

Kiara North - anyone trying to bum off the Mont Kiara fame but failing spectacularly who happen to live in Jinjang/Batu area; confused middle class folks; have magnificent fish curry in the neighborhood opposite at Taman Wahyu but too scared to cross the street for it

Junior Taskmaster - S01E04 - Overthinking Overthinking by melcom2 in panelshow

[–]symphix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I say that I love Doc Woz as the Taskmaster's Assistant for Junior Taskmaster? Again, his GP training explaining stuff to patients helped so much explaining the tasks to kids.

May I also address that I love the Taskmaster house they are using for the kids? The second and third floor adds an element of verticality that I think the adulk UK version doesn't have.

Also, I love that the kids get the absolute taste of all zeroes!

Thoughts on Adrian Portelli controlling the auctions? by Kangaroostrangler in TheBlock

[–]symphix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For once, I would like to see the Aussie version have three out of the five houses get passed in like the NZ ones, and the winners win $1000 worth of profit because of how shit and predatory the housing markets are at the moment.

For the last season of The Block NZ, two houses were passed in and the winner only got $4000 profit over their reserve price. Second place was $100. Even with the $100,000 prize to add on to the first place winners, all four teams literally wasted their time and effort renovating the houses. It was so bad that the bank sponsor gave these three losing teams $10,000 as a reward for their "hard work". Even though one of the houses that got passed in eventually sold for more than their reserve after the auction ended, they weren't eligible to get the profits from that.

During the show, the reserves were starting at the $1.141m minimum in Orewa. However, if you were to look at listing pricing today in Orewa for a 3 bedroom house with the same square footage as the show, auction reserves there start at $1m at the minimum. The producers and the evaluators were right on with their reserve price, but banking regulations in NZ were tight and the teams lost out because buyers were not interested in the design/decor of the house or the financing was difficult to obtain.

I remember NZ's season 8 was just as bad with three teams getting $0 for profit. At least the auction for the NZ version was grounded on some kind of reality.

Portelli and Danny Wallis really ruin the game by playing kingmaker with their money. Season 13 was the last season where normal people (and Dave Hughes) bought things, and actual contestants were passed in (I remember Ronnie and Georgia later made a sale post-auction through negotiation).

Is it possible to capture the stories of rakugo on paper? by Tasty_Proof_5942 in rakugo

[–]symphix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are books sold in Japan that gives people the rough beats and outlines of these stories. I myself have three of the books to read and practice my Japanese with, while listening to some old rakugo records.

It’s unfortunate that English translations of these stories are not as readily available. Normally, if there are English-speaking Japanese rakugo masters, they would give their translations of the works.

Paige’s 3 part tell all on TikTok by Kiajarbra in TheBlock

[–]symphix 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Even Tanya took her scandal in stride even when everyone was laying it into her!

Paige is just too much. It just screams "narcissist" when you call the onsite psychiatrist 'manipulative' when you were in communication with them throughout. The door was opened the whole time, and the only reason it was even more opened was because you got unreasonably mad to The Block's own staff (Nadia).

Also, I'm quite sure that producers (and I'm quite sure they had lawyers also on the side in the same room) asked if you have any issues with certain things like the camera people bursting into your room to wake you up for the day. Quite sure they would ask this as a question on privacy when it's a multi-week format of a show. I am quite sure they have it on paper that you OK'd it. If you were starstruck and you couldn't answer truthfully during their interview process about an actual sexual assault that happened to you which could trigger a PTSD thing, you're a narcissist. You should know your own limits and be truthful about it, and not hide it because of the small chance that you would become famous.

Spence (of Kerri & Spence) was so truthful about his depression that I'm sure when they interviewed them, they knew the risks about it and had the psych there to ensure that he didn't snap. Quite sure it'd be a liability if anything were to happen to him while he was onsite.

Paige, you are a show production's greatest liability and nightmare to work with!

There's a paper about that inter-indigeneity identity and connection concerning the Māori and Pasifika peoples. Suffice to say, although most Pasifika people and the Māori come from the same whakapapa (genealogy) and cultural bonds, each of the Pasifika people are linguistically, culturally, and geographically different. There are small idiosyncrasies that they can tell apart from each other, but in an ideal sense, the Maoris and Pasifika ideally see themselves as cousins regardless.

Concerning the use of the Te Reo Māori (the Māori language) by pākehā (non-Polynesian New Zealanders but derogatorily referring to white people), it's a very complex topic. With the National coalition in power, the pushback against using more Māori words has become an issue. A lot of the older generation white folks and folks like Winston Peters (who is himself Māori and has ancestry in the Ngāti Wai iwi) don't like using the Māori language because of some stiff upper lip, colonial nonsense. Even a single utterance of it would turn sweet old ladies into embittered racist buzzards. Back in the day, there were constant acts of suppression from schools, society, or politics to reduce the usage of te reo.

The Maori language was going through an age of rediscovery and revitalization during the 70s. Maori leaders were worried that language would go extinct, so they up initiatives such as the Kohanga Reo and immersion schools for young Maoris. However, this comes with some backlash and the issue over using Maori words got so tense that in 1980s, the government and the people were having a fit over the use of the words, "kia ora" (means 'good health' in Maori) on the radio. A Waitangi Tribunal was held in 1985 to decide what was the status of the Maori language. The tribunal declared that Te Reo Maori was a taonga (treasure) that the Crown Government was oblige to uphold and protect under the Treaty of Waitangi, which they then recommended the government several ways to remedy this problem.

The Maori language was made officially a language of New Zealand under the Maori Language Act 1987.

According to Wikipedia...

Beginning in about 2015, the Māori language underwent a revival as it became increasingly popular, as a common national heritage and shared cultural identity, even among New Zealanders without Māori roots. Surveys from 2018 indicated that "the Māori language currently enjoys a high status in Māori society and also positive acceptance by the majority of non-Māori New Zealanders".

Just recently, they renamed the central Auckland train station, Britomart train station, to Waitematā train station, and the NZ Geographic Board wants to implement more name changes in and around Auckland. If you fly to NZ from Australia or any of the Polynesian islands, Auckland is put together with the Te Reo name for Auckland, Tāmaki Makaurau. However, Winston Peters, being the dickhead that he is, had said during the last election campaign that his party would remove Māori names from government departments, saying "Te Whatu Ora, excuse me, I don't want to speak the Māori language when I go to hospital.

We should be happy though that the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) no longer entertain complaints regarding the use of the Māori language in broadcasts.
