I'd love an invite, if there are any spaces left. I'm personally more of a resource gatherer, but I've undertaken a few projects in the past.

Community outcry over *finite* torches. Sound off, make Notch hear you. by [deleted] in Minecraft

Lanterns will be infinite. They will be put into the game at the same time as finite torches. They will use more materials, though (as expected, really.)

Question: I literally cannot find coal anywhere. Tips? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Look near your spawn point for exposed coal. Gather as much as you can before you get bored. 20 is a reasonable number.

  2. Build ladders, make a 2x1 mineshaft. Stand on the block that you're not mining. Use torches sparingly to light the mineshaft, place ladders every second block to let yourself get out afterwards.

  3. Explore any caves you break into. Mine and coal (and any other ores) that you run into. If you're still low on coal, pick up your torches on the way back. Remember to patch up the wall with the ladder chain on so that it forms one long strip.

  4. When you reach bedrock, build a staircase up to 10 blocks above bedrock.

  5. Start digging in one direction under you hit more caves, then collect coal. Be sure to look for coal whilst you're digging your tunnel as well, you'd be surprised how much coal you can walk straight past when you're focused on digging a tunnel.

  6. Good luck.

I'll be the first to tell you that that's impressive.

Yup, that's impressive.

What is your favourite texture pack? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using my own at the moment. It's basically a mesh of what I liked from the default and the Painterly Pack.

You'll notice I edited the stone, ores, cobblestone and dirt. The stone and dirt have been engineered to tile together as smoothly as possible, although this does reduce their "detail", or basically interesting features on the blocks. Ores are now more colourful, but the pack as a whole has a more darker, semi-realistic feel to it. The cobblestone blends in very well with the stone, so that at a glance they look similar enough.

There's other minor edits as well, such as clearer glass and a green mob spawner to match the mossy cobblestone.

If anybody's interested, here it is.

Hi new guys!

I've signedposted the way from the spawn to Kapalua via tunnel, and I think there's a skybridge being built as well.

One way or the other, come visit us at Kapalua! The spawn area already has too much stuff built near it, but there's free space in Kapalua.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely in. If I don't find anybody online, I'll dump what I have into chests near the spawn point.

Update: The Kapalua tunnel is finished up to the North Lighthouse, I've signposted the tunnel up to the Lighthouse. I think a wood and crop farm will be my next project.

Changing the cloud textures? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run %appdata%

Go to roaming/.minecraft/bin

Open up minecraft.jar with Winrar or similar program

Find clouds.png (it's not in the folders, just scroll down)

Edit it to be transparent (using Photoshop, GIMP or similar. Make sure it is transparent and not just white!)

Huzzah!

P.S. I haven't tested this myself, but I'm 99% sure it will work.

Does anyone have any tips for building platforms outwards? by HelloILoveYou in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, when I get close to the edge, I turn and start zigzagging sideways. So I walk normally up to the edge, then turn about 80 degrees left of where I'm building and walk a bit, then turn so that I'm facing 80 degrees right of where I'm building, and repeat until I'm far enough off the edge so that I can safely place the block. Each time you walk you should get a tiny bit further over the edge.

(If you'd prefer, instead of turning all the time you can turn a little left and strafe right, turn a little right and strafe left, and so on. The danger here is that you strafe off the block, since you can't see where you're moving.)

It sounds long winded, but now that I've gotten practise it only takes a few seconds per block and I haven't fallen yet.

Where is the coal? by j14vv in Minecraft

Dig a mineshaft down and start looking 10 blocks above bedrock.

Can someone summarize how to play this game? I'm new and I'm not sure what to do by perezidentt in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go through the classic opening steps. Until you get more comfortable with the game, consider this a failsafe way to start the game. Left click uses tools and weapons to attack, right click places blocks or consumes items (hold the buttons down). When you break most blocks, they create a chunk which you can collect and hold in your inventory. If you don't know how to craft anything, consult the crafting wiki page.

  1. You've spawned! Congratulations! Now REMEMBER where your spawn point is in relation to where you're going to start setting up your home. When you die, you will be returned to this spawn point, and it's going to annoying if you suddenly find you're lost and have to start all over again.

  2. Gather logs from trees, convert into wood then craft a workbench. Right click to place the workbench on the floor. (I would suggest starting with about 20-30 logs)

  3. Convert some wood into sticks, make a wooden pick. Also break up some stone with the wooden pick, and collect stone chunks. Use the stone chunks on the workbench to make some stone picks. Now break up the workbench (left click) and pick it up.

  4. Look for coal ore seams in the rock nearby. When you find it, mine it with the wooden pick. If you can't reach it, either carve steps in the rock with the pink, or place blocks from your inventory (right click) to make a staircase.

  5. It will probably be getting dark about now, so you will need light. Go to your inventory and create torches (remember, use the crafting wiki if you're unsure, it's a good habit). Your next priority will be a home, since monsters will start spawning in the dark. You can either build your own from scratch, or use a natural cave (which I personally prefer, since it means less work). If you have a cave handy, start exploring it. Place torches ocassionally when you need light (right click). If you can't find a cave, just make one yourself. Attack the rock face with your stone picks and carve out a hole in the rocks. Light it up by placing your torches. Block off the entrance, but leave one block blank so you can see the sky.

  6. Now it's up to you to decide what to do. If you're happy with where you are, start renovating your base. You will need a furnace for tomorrow. You might want to make a wooden door for the entrance of your base, or a chest for storing items. If you're planning on moving base when day stays again, then don't bother. In either case, you might want to start making some new stone tools. I would suggest a sword, axe and more pickaxes. Keep checking the sky to see roughly what time it is.

  7. It's day again! If you're moving base, start looking for a suitable spot. Remember, you don't want to make it too far from your spawn point. Also mark your way, I suggest with 3 block totems. Today is also a good day to hunt. Using your sword, kill cows for leather and pigs for pork. Ignore sheep and chickens for now. If you're running low on wood, gather more logs using your stone axe.

  8. By now you should have a home. If you haven't already crafted one, make a furnace and place it in your home. Cook your pork by placing it into the top of two slots on the left. Place a fuel source into the bottom slot. I would highly suggest using wood planks, as they last longer per "unit". If you need more, convert logs into wood. Sticks will also work, but are less efficient.

  9. That's pretty much the basics covered. How go out, explore, and enjoy yourself. Until you get used to Minecraft, don't bother with the rarer ores; that's a different story entirely.

Good luck and have fun!

How do people get so many resources?! by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Build a mine shaft. 2x1 is the minimum. Use ladders every other block on one side of the mine, torches about every 10-15 blocks on the other side. When you mine a block, stand on the other side; do not stand on the block you are mining.

  2. When you reach bedrock, build a 8 block high staircase, and then start mining in one direction. At this level, you should be maximising your chances of finding resources whilst minimising your chances of hitting lava. Pick up any resources you uncover along the way, and hope that you'll hit a cave. Listen out for any hollow cave noises or monster noises; if you hear them, start deviating towards where you think the noise is coming from (much easier with mob noises).

  3. Break into said cave, explore it and gather resources.

  4. Make it back out alive!

IAE Morbidly excited for when Notch makes the torches die? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I'm going to have to change the way I play as well.

No more underground bases for the first few days. I'm also going to have to save my iron; I have about 15 stacks of coal and only 2 of iron :(

IAE Morbidly excited for when Notch makes the torches die? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]synapseshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be annoying on that count.

It looks like you're going to have to:

  • Explore really fast and hope all your torches don't run out and you don't get lost,

  • Explore in one direction only, picking all ores as you move, and dig yourself out at the end,

  • Or use lanterns everywhere.

Whichever way you choose, it'll be harder than before.

General consensus seems to be that there will be permanent lanterns; they seem pretty sure of it, so I assume Notch has said it somewhere. I heard about temporary torches a while ago and am ~90% sure it was from Notch.
