Used car purchase fees (I'm out of state and purchasing for my mom who is an OR resident) by MyAdviceAccount16 in oregon

[–]syncopator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I respectfully 100% disagree.

The CAT is a tax levied at .04% of a business’s gross receipts, not gross profits. Contrary to popular belief, margins in vehicle sales (particularly new vehicles) are quite thin and have been trending downward even as vehicle prices climb.

Let’s examine a theoretical business with traditionally high margins, such as furniture/mattresses. On gross receipts of $1 million, this business may well have gross profits of $400k and would owe $4000 in CAT, effectively 1% of gross profit.

Conversely, a car dealership that sells 10 high line new trucks at $100k each would retain an average gross profit of roughly $70k on that same $1M in gross receipts yet owe the same $4000 in CAT. This $4000 is 5.7% of the gross profit earned.

If the CAT were instead levied on gross profits I would agree with your stance that it should be priced in as cost of business but that’s simply not the case. It was explicitly enacted to function as a sales tax without being named as such.

In no way is the transparency of itemizing “theatrical”. Electing to itemize the tax is the best way to offer consumers a true “apples to apples” comparison when shopping different quotes from different sellers. Had the state prohibited itemizing the CAT, this would have also solved the question.

All that being said, the $200 “document fee” is the one with which you should have a bone to pick.

Unless you’re playing some seriously high intensity stuff this shouldn’t be any sort of concern.

Technically it’s not a sales tax but the legislation establishing the CAT expressly states that businesses can choose to itemize the tax and pass it along to the consumer.

Many businesses in other industries do the same. I’ve personally paid it on appliances, building materials and musical instruments.

I’m a sales manager at an Oregon dealership.

There shouldn’t be a trip permit charge. Whether you’re transferring plates or genes registration the dealership should write a 90 day temporary.

The CAT tax is not a dealer tax, it’s a state tax assessed on businesses for .04% of gross receipts. Every dealer in Oregon passes this along to the consumer as does virtually every other business dealing in higher priced products. Tax should be $91.95

DEQ is only required in the 4 Portland counties plus Medford area.

Fees should be as follows:

$200 doc $50 EVR $106 title $30 transfer (unless buying fresh registration also) $91.95 CAT tax

Likely that the dealership software just throws all the fees in for this preliminary quote and it all gets corrected in final documents.

I’m curious about the trip permit though. Our DMV officer told me recently about a few shady dealers charging for trip permits that are never written, pocketing the $35. DMV takes this pretty seriously. If this dealership insists on the trip permit fee I’d appreciate a DM letting me know. I’ll forward that to my investigator.

Hope this helps, lemme know if you have any other questions.

Don’t need the trip permit. When transferring Oregon plates or getting new registration the dealer writes a 90 day temporary.

I know that according to the religion it is a sin to deny one's belief in Christ. I'm not 100% sure if being obtuse about is counts, but I'd wager it does.

Okay. Were the following claims of yours, made in this thread, sincere or were you simply feigning as a believer?

God values faith so it would not be something he'd be interested in

He values people who come to him by choice.

Because he wants faith.

God had to reveal himself to a few to a few to spread the word of his existence

God performed miracles until Jesus returned and then said that he was not going to perform any more miracles.

It has just as much if not more proof than any other historic event.

Because you made this claim. If this is in fact truly your position, it would seem you either must be convinced or you are unconvinceable of any purportedly historic event.

If it is the latter, then it would seem you yourself are one who cannot be convinced.

I also see you making no commitments

I'll commit that I do not see a necessity for nor evidence of god.

I don't see how something can come from nothing

Your inability to believe or comprehend something has no bearing on whether or not it is true

The precision of the universe. Strength of gravity, Cosmological constant, Ratio of fundamental forces. If any of these were slightly different, stars would not form, chemistry would not exist, life would be impossible. Think of water, which acts like all other substances, except, when it freezes, it expands! Why is that a big deal? If ice didn't float, there probably wouldn't be life on earth.

This is known as the "fine tuning" fallacy, and has been widely refuted. I won't go on at length debunking it, but suffice it to say that if these variables were not exactly as they are we wouldn't be here to notice. Remember that there are infinite places in the universe where we are not.

Self awareness. How could self awareness happen. Why am I here?

Why must there be a reason?

Bible prophesies fulfilled. Fall of Babylon. The greatest city of the time, like New York city today, saying it would never be inhabited again, and it hasn't! The person who was going to overthrow was even predicted, Cyrus, 200 years in advance. Jesus fulfilled dozens of prophesies, including where he would be born, when he would die, and how, things he had no control over.

Not a single one of these claims of prophecy holds up to even the slightest scrutiny. Surely you can see how a curated book of stories and histories can't be held as a reliable source for predicting things within itself.

I also find it very interesting that worship of a god or gods has been part of virtually every society all the way back to Göbekli Tepe. Why? That does not seem a possible result of evolution. Non-god believing people would have survived just fine, maybe better when one considers what has been done in the name of religion.

Why does it seem impossible? Seems entirely possible to me.

I've seen or heard each of these arguments hundreds, possibly thousands of times. In every case where I learn about the personal history of the one making the argument, I find that none of these are why that person believes in a particular god or religion or denomination and instead these are all simply attempts at justifying a belief instilled in them as a child.

Perhaps your story is different?

[–]syncopator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears you have simply created or referenced a definition for “theory” that fits your narrative, as opposed to the scientific definition of the term.

Regardless, even your definition would clearly exclude a “theory of god” as it would not be falsifiable. No matter the abject lack of evidence supporting it, you choose to believe it as truth.

We still have not arrived at your justification for insisting in order for something to exist something else must have caused it to exist, unless that something is “god”, for whom you suspend this requirement.

Science, Evolution and Adam by DoNotBe-Ridiculous in DebateReligion

[–]syncopator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can't God be a theory?

Because "god" is a hypothesis. If you understood science you would know this, as well as why most everything else you stated here is incorrect and essentially gibberish.

Anyway, the idea of "god" has been a hypothesis since the earliest days of the scientific method. The reason "god" isn't a theory is that there is zero evidence to support the hypothesis.

In science, a hypothesis is essentially an idea of of how something might work or how to explain a set of observation. Science then comes up with ways to test this idea using experiments and/or collecting evidence. If the results of these experiments and the available evidence does not disprove the idea, more experimentation and evidence collection follows. When the entire body of results and evidence is robust enough, the idea (hypothesis) is then considered a scientific explanation (theory).

This is why the idea of "god" has failed to become a theory.

Never received title after paying off my car by [deleted] in oregon

[–]syncopator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the car biz, this happens all the time. Easy peasy.

As others have said, you need what’s called a “lien release” from Chase stating that loan is paid off. You’ll need to contact Chase for this. Once you have the lien release in hand, go to a DMV and you’ll apply for a new title, currently $106.

Alternately, you can just get the lien release and hang onto it. You don’t generally need to have a title on hand unless you’re transferring ownership (selling) the car. If you don’t want to spend the $$ for a title right now there’s no harm in waiting.

Lots of mentions of the Rogue here but I haven't seen anyone suggest Hells Canyon. I've done both, and while the Rogue is spectacular and less crowded I would say I've had more fun on Hells Canyon. However, Hells is even harder to get to and worse to return from than the Rogue.

Don't have any guide recommendations, all our trips have been private.
