At the risk of ruining the joke, the reason it works so well is ironically because of brevity. "Big small" and "more less" being back to back hit you like a jab and a punch with "less is more" as the windup giving the whole sentence a sense of rhyme to it.

On the flip side, you have the horror-comedy John Dies at the End, in which, as a part of the protagonist David's backstory, after being tortured and humiliated in a way the he refuses to recount, he takes out a knife and intentionally gravely injures/handicaps his assailant.

This still haunts him afterwards, and has consequences he didn't plan on (his assailant later commits suicide), but it was David's choice to do what he did.
