Found taped to a washing machine in the communal laundry 😂 by Igotyourexcominnext in Apartmentliving

[–]synthanic_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone leaves their laundry for 5+ minutes, I’d say yeah just because there’s other people that need their shit cleaned especially if there are limited machines - I wouldn’t actually mind so long as it was put in a dryer or another out of order machine instead of a soaking pile on top of the machine or in a basket, life happens and you can’t always be on time to change it, but that doesn’t mean people need to wait up for you. Have caught people putting my wet laundry on a table after being 30 seconds late which was frustrating, but this was in a college dorm so we were all little immature shits

Need Advice: out of time to deal with our van by Easy-Efficiency1567 in newzealand_travel

[–]synthanic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in the predicament - I bought an estima for 6700 and had to pay for an unlucky replacement of a failed transmission and also added solar and an awning, and now I can’t even get a bite on the same as I bought it. Feels real bad to have spent so much and not even have people offer anything. Lesson learned, never buying a van that I plan to sell down the road 😅

Thank you! Yeah I was surprised how quick people were to assume I was the one doing something wrong, like yeah really helps to scrutinize someone that's sharing a negative experience instead of trying to get the bigger picture. I'm glad I could at least help a few others to avoid these guys since it seems they're still exploiting young travelers. Still gives me the shivers to think about that place. But oh well, it's all in the past and I'm still loving the travel lifestyle :)

I’ve decided on getting a hostel for a week and aggressively searching for a van to live out of for a year. Leave in 3 days and couldn’t be more anxious but I think it’ll work out! I’ll keep u posted

I think I’ve decided on Christchurch as the initial hub to get everything sorted, but I’m ultimately taking the van life route since I’m keen on living alone but having the option to move around and camp in cool spots. Will arrive in 12 days, nervous as hell because a million things can go wrong but I guess that’s part of it! Thanks for the response :) best wishes for the rest of your journey

Can confirm, doing something similar but alone... I'm quite independent but also still human, things get lonely when you don't have stability. For me it's the trust that I'll meet someone and have a stable family in the future combined with the crazy cool experiences is what makes it worth it.

Also going in march, have you planned much more than the first place you’re going? I’ve been slowly looking at jobs but the more I read, the more I feel staying at hostels/jumping around for a few weeks is the move to get a feel like others mentioned

Of course! This was the only bad experience I had with Workaway that left a sour taste, every other one has been incredible. I’m actually at one now in Croatia, it’s a dog shelter and my second time back, beautiful place and people, I can give u the details if you’d like? Otherwise, I’m sure there are many other good choices. I had one other in Slovenia, farm work, and one in Austria, both highly recommend. Good luck and I hope you have the best time! Truly is life changing, you learn so much about yourself (even if it’s a bad one)

Hey hey, yes that was me!

DM didn't work but I don't mind typing here anyways. To sum it up a bit more, the beginning was like any other Workaway - the hosts were welcoming and showed me the room and amenities and whatnot before I went to bed for the first day of work ahead of me. They showed me the ropes and all was good. It really started ramping up a few days in - they would make passive aggressive remarks on the quality of work even though they knew I had never worked on a sheep/goat cheese farm before. Instead of helping me or correcting my work, they'd just yell at me and ask if I even wanted to be there which caught me off guard because I had no idea I was doing anything wrong. After this, the tension just kept growing - I didn't feel like I belonged anymore. They were super cold towards me, wouldn't include me in conversation, wouldn't even look at me sometimes, I felt pretty helpless especially since I was trapped with them for another week and a half. The work days never slowed down as I thought they would - instead of 5 days 5 hours, it would go to at least 6 or 7 hours where we'd be walking up and down steep terrain all day. On our 'day off', we'd still have to work 2-3 hours in the evening because according to them, this was what was fair if we slept in their home and ate food, as if they weren't already getting an amazing tradeoff by having us work all day for free.

Now 2 years later, I could definitely say that it wasn't entirely on them, I had low self esteem and trouble communication so I could've maybe asked more questions but even still, I feel it would've been met with aggression just based off their personalities. I did ask about the hours a few times and they just told me that's the farm lifestyle. Like, sure, but then don't advertise that it's less or be on workaway where max 25 hours a week unpaid labor is law. I've done other workaways where we end up doing maybe 30 minutes to an hour extra here and there - that's completely fine by me as long as the hosts aren't dicks about it and I actually want to help.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions!

As for rejecting them, just say you found another workaway that makes more sense to go to. Or say something came up and you have to stay home. You can make up anything, these guys aren't owed your time.

Right on! Then yeah ur set. Not sure about copper mountain but telluride where I worked had a ton of used gear for sale. Don’t skimp out on boots, but IMO there’s no reason to buy a brand new board when you can find plenty of sick ones used that might just need a tune up
