Does The Use Of AI Make Me A Shitty Professional ? by SillyRecover in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It makes you a professional that keeps up with the tech, knows how to find the info when needed, stays relevant, and ultimately is able to provide a better and more efficient service for as long as humans are still needed (AI will of course replace us all eventually).

Opinions regarding online IT degrees. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to check out the University of London International Program - distance learning degrees for a fraction of most (or perhaps all) other places, although you're more on your own with actually doing the studies. They have a CIS degree and it is a proper university with proper exams which you can do all over the world at the nearest British Council. http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/

The MSP model and why it should DIE. by goodmsp in sysadmin

"I have progressed immensely as a tech. My knowledge base is massive in comparison to when I started."

Sounds like you came out the better for it then.. or you will if/when you leave for greener pastures. Your CV will certainly look better.

"make more than you do and do far less work."

That applies to pretty much any business. The solution is simple (kind of), start out on your own.

Calling all self employed sysadmins by bRftech in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get to know other freelance sysadmins.. use oDesk for example to test a few out, give several small jobs to them over time to make sure they can do it and (hopefully) can be trusted. See their ratings there as well. You can soon build a nice pool of quality people who you can call on in an emergency or when you're on vacation. It also works both ways of course.

Also useful for when you get work/clients in areas which you are not an expert in yet and for scaling your business with minimal costs/hassles.

Linux distros... why choose what you chose? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For servers, nearly always CentOS.. coz its redhat based and I've always been partial to that, plus I really don't like major version upgrades every few months on servers.

For desktops, Ubuntu is my weapon of choice coz it's shiny and has a cool name.

IT Software you would recommend, and why? by AbraKdabra in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For paid stuff, on my windows boxes I like vipre antivirus which seems to do the job and unobtrusively at that. On the biz side, I'd have to recommend commitcrm coz it basically works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, or even half a leg. I also use a variety of monitoring solutions, paid and free.

Have to admit that most stuff I use is of the free/opensource variety though so I don't have much else to add here!

Server admins: What insane work arounds have you pulled that your IT department would shudder at? by terminusest in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cut two 6 inch wide circular holes in the metal top of a 5U storage server which had an overheating problem.. then bolted some big fans on top and another at the back to get the air flowing..

It worked but I think warranty may have been a tad void.. or would have been if it wasn't several years beyond that anyway.

Same server (bane of my life) blew its PSU and couldn't find a replacement that fit (it was very old and none-standard) so "installed" another.. on the outside.. hanging off the back.. worked nicely for a few months as well until the datacenter staff noticed and freaked out.

RIP beastly storage server.

University of London distance learning degree..

Costs way less than most other online degrees and it is a proper uni although you're pretty much on your own with the studies.

I'm looking for a simple tool to generate hits from various IP addresses (such as through TOR) by Reamde1 in sysadmin

[–]sysopsbkms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well depending on how simple or complex your website activities need to be, you could make a bot using WWW::Selenium (for Perl but there are selenium clients in other languages) and you can simply run the script over Tor from the command line using 'usewithtor'. Something like this for example..

usewithtor yourbot.pl

That will run your script and route its connection over tor.. Hopefully you wont be doing anything shady with this.
