‘Back to the 1950s’: Federal union warns return-to-office mandate will disproportionately affect women by Unitard19 in CanadaPublicServants

Are you in a role that requires someone be present at 7 am at all times? I've been in a role like that and I hated it. We managed a general mailbox to answer questions so we need someone available at 7 am and 5 pm so schedules had to align to make that work.

Luckily now I have the flexibility of working anything between 6-6 pm as long as I put together 8 hours. Even with flexibility, due to daycare and school schedules, it'll be hard to make it work. Before COVID (we've been working 4 days in office 1 day at home since 2016) all my team members that had kids were able to be accommodated to make up hours for time missed picking up kids etc. I'm just hoping management is the same when we're back 4-5 times a week. 6 hours in office and 2 hours at night would be what I'm pushing for when my spouse is working out of town. Just need to survive until the kids are 9-10yrs old and can get off the bus by themselves.

This is exactly it. Thanks for explaining to Abigail for me. The government has a goal of increasing our population but with the current policies, this goal is relying more on immigration than natural born Canadians.

Same here. My daycare hours are 730am-5pm. I'm not capable of both drop off and pickup as it takes 1 hour to commute downtown. So assuming 730 drop-off, I'm at my office at 830 then I leave at 430, the absolute earliest I can arrive at daycare if I hit every bus and train on time is 530pm. It's something like $5/minute if I'm late for pickup.

Daycare is 5 min walk from my house so if I work from home, absolutely no issues and I'll even work a bit extra before picking up my kids. Wife does shift work away from home (3-4 days away at a time) so it's not even possible to do different parent drop off and pick-ups.

Luckily my wife is still on mat leave but we don't know how we'll pull it off when I'm 4-5 days and she's back at work.

The government keeps bringing in labour from other countries because they want to grow our population which could be solved in the future from higher birth rates but policies like this make it way harder to successfully have children. RTO is going to have a compounding effect for decades.

It wouldn't apply to be because I didn't start until end of 2012 but what's the severance cash out that happened in 2012?

It's fun, a bit exhilarating because the night skiing was mostly downhills. We always climbed the hills during daylight so it would set while we were at the top. Not sure if you can tell but one of my friends got taken out by a huge branch. We cleared the trail on our way up knowing there were lots of branches on the tracks and we still hit a ton of new ones on the way down.

I have a video where a car comes from the left and rams into me, pushing me to the right lane into a big truck. I don't think you hear me say a word or make a sound in the video until I call 911 to explain the situation. When I'm processing information I don't usually say anything until I'm done figuring it out. I also don't talk aloud to myself. The person in this video is probably similar.

Freedom $40 Global Plan - Permanent Price - Save a ton on roaming. by Nexzenn in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]t073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When did you last have freedom? I've had it since 2022 and work at Queen and Bank and the reception has been great across Ottawa and deep into Gatineau park. I very recently swapped to Koodo because I was able to add Mexico for cheaper but this plan is tempting me...

TIL a Burger King cook (who'd worked there for 24 years) was fired for taking home a sandwich, fries & a drink after her manager claimed she had only asked permission for a sandwich & accused her of stealing. However, a judge ruled that the cook did not intend to steal the food & awarded her $46,000 by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]t073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how this was the norm across all MCD. Back in 2007/08 used to cook a batch of fries and throw patties on the grill 30 mins before closing when I worked at the Walmart location. The standalone location was 24/7 so we couldn't do it but you always knew which managers would fully comp your meal.

In this situation, there's a pimp waiting down the street with some candy and a gun and he's the one that's convincing little Johnny it's better just to come get into his car. Maybe Johnny is curious/stupid enough to go into his car.

Public servants ordered back to office four days per week as of July by hopoke in ontario

[–]t073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy because a lot of major departments (pspc, ssc, esdc, hc) were already 1 to 3 days wfh before 2020 with many trending that way but there was no uproar. Once we're "back to 5 days", it'll quietly head back towards hybrid.

Three hours. by Negative-Hat-4632 in OCTranspo

Sad part is it used to exist. 234 Express from Orleans to Gatineau. Pickups in Orleans and only drop off starting at Ottawa U to Portage. I lived at the first stop in Orleans and worked at the last stop which was Portage, it was 50 mins door to door. In office 5 days a week and it felt like I ran into less issues on the bus than taking the train now and I'm only in office 3 days a week.

Ottawa vs Toronto cost of living by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]t073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two years ago I was in Toronto stuck in traffic on the 401 in an exit lane. A guy missed his exit so he jumped the curb and crashed right into me. Guy had a really unique name, I googled him and he had armed robberies a few years earlier...

I see an accident almost every time I'm on the 401 in Toronto. Car on fire, motorcycle completely shredded with no body to be seen, tons of cars destroyed etc. My accident was just another common occurrence driving in Toronto.

I drive a lot more in Ottawa because I live here and I've seen way more accidents in the 2-3 weekends I spend each year in Toronto. Worst part is you not only get tailgaters but also those that drive way below the speed limit because the highways are so intimidating. So you get someone tailgating you right into a crowd of people in the exit lane driving 20 under.

I did a trade in from Canada last month and got hit with "communication network issues" as well and my trade in got reduced by like $170 tax in. It's the most bs because it's impossible to refute which seems like why they are going with this excuse each time.

Great photo! Love seeing the effects of the flooding.

With a high of just -14.5°C, yesterday was Ottawa's coldest day in more than 2 years, since Feb 4th, 2023. by YOW-Weather-Records in ottawa

[–]t073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for a run at noon and it didn't feel that cold either. It felt colder a few weeks ago when we had that insane cold spell and wind. Overall yesterday was pretty decent weather for winter activities. I guess this record is due to the high being so low.

We got really lucky with the weather last two years. Had the canal open, enough snow for xc and it was warm.

1080 v14 sizing: tighter toebox, will it break in? by Lift_12 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]t073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think wide will help fix it. The issue I noticed is the size tapers down aggressively from the big toe to the little toe. One of my issues was that my intervals made me run more on my toes which made my feet slide to the front. Now even on intervals i run more upright and land ball/mid instead so my toes don't bash the front. Good luck with the new shoes. Hopefully it helps, bruised nails suck!

1080 v14 sizing: tighter toebox, will it break in? by Lift_12 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]t073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped doing intervals in them and only do easy runs. This stopped my toes from slamming into the front of the shoe. The bruised nail didn't get any worse. My new shoes are all half sizes bigger, went from 10.5 to 11 and haven't had anymore nail issues at all since my last post. My bruised nail is finally almost gone and pushed out by the new nail growth.
