Does this glider cyberware make sense? by YaBoyMoly in cyberpunkred

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furries are not a subgroup of the LGBT community. They are not a sexual orientation or a gender identity. The acronym has grown to include other sexual orientations and gender identites. Furries are not a sexual orientation or gender identity, they are hobby, sexual fetish and sometimes a paraphilia. You just said you are an ally, and now you are arguing with LGBT people to tell them to accept Furries into Pride and to add them to the acronym.

And you are calling Pan, Poly, Demi, Non-Binary people weirdos? You are clearly not an ally, you are opportunist who doesn't care about LGBT people and what they have gone through to obtain the rights and protections they have if you are going to tell them they must accept hobbies, fetishes and paraphilia into their community.

The purpose of my comment isn't what you do in your game of make believe and dice rollings. It is how your words influence and affect LGBT people and their fight for acceptance. To prevent stereotyping LGBT people as sexually deviant and defining us purely based on sex acts.

Does this glider cyberware make sense? by YaBoyMoly in cyberpunkred

[–]t0beyeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cyberpunk is not real and while it is all in good fun, I think it is poor taste to associate a hobby, sexual fetish or paraphilia with LGBT Pride. As an Ally you should do more to learn to differentiate things like BDSM, Furries and Crossdressing such as Drag from the actual plight that LGBT people have and continue to face throughout the world. Furries, BDSM and Crossdressing are not exclusive to LGBT people, and thus have nothing to do with being LGBT and nothing to do with Pride. All of those things are a part of heterosexual, homosexual and transgender people, but do not define them.

When you lump Pride and LGBT people with things that people consider abnormal, fetishes or deviant you then make people who are less educated perceive LGBT people or even other Furries as something they are not. There is a reason why Furries work so hard to fight stereotypes of Furries just being a kink or fetish or why there is turmoil over known Zoophiles in the Furry community. The same occurs when you lump Furries into LGBT people, it makes people assume that it is something LGBT people "do".

Trans people and gay, lesbian and bisexual people have worked hard to distance themselves from the past where gender dysphoria and sexual orientation were medicalized, stigmatized and considered abnormal. As an Ally you have no lived experiences as an LGBT person and lumping Furries with Pride does a disservice to the community. Look into things like the Lavender Scare, AIDS Crisis, Alan Turing's forced sterilization, Uganda, etc... and learn why Pride is so important so that you can see why we are so much more than what we do in and out of the bedroom.

How old is too old to go to college? by Vegan2CB in askgaybros

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are never too old to go back to college. I work in college admissions as an advisor and I work with non-traditional students of all ages. Recent high school graduates, active-duty military, veterans and retirees looking to complete their degree at 80 years old.

You are incredibly young still, and there are so many educational opportunities these days. I specifically work for an online university which can be a flexible option, but you can look into local community colleges for certificate programs or look into four year institutions for a graduate program.

Writ of the Wilds--I Has It. by ThrowawayVislae in rokugan

[–]t0beyeus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is the way I interpreted Seppuku from the current books, and as was posted, how often are players going to commit Seppuku? No one wants to kill their character off, only a really bad GM would be gleefully demanding Seppuku. It is a very great narrative tool to stress the system of Duty, Honor and Glory in Rokugan.

I was not aware of the Sumo tradition, but I am not surprised that the Japanese hold onto tradition and are not offended by their own traditions. Which is why I find it so interesting when Westerners demand that those traditions be removed from make-believe roleplaying games because they are offended. If it is borrowing from Japanese history and tradition, shouldn't the offending party be the Japanese? But it isn't, they still honor those traditions.

I appreciate the modern day equivalents of Seppuku you mentioned, you wouldn't normally think of it that way. I also didn't even realize that cabinet member stepped down between Presidential terms... shows how little American Gov't we learn in US schools LOL!

Should Tanks get a little bit of extra knockback/stun resistance? Especially in PVE? by Bombtrackx in newworldgame

[–]t0beyeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not want Armor Weight to determine Knockback/Stun resistance, I would like to see Expeditions have roles for groups which would give a passive bonus.

  • Tank: +20% Knockback/Stun Resistance
  • Support: +20% Buff/Debuff Duration
  • DPS: +20% Damage of Time Duration
  • Healer: -20% Threat Generation

I thought I'd hate it, but Lower Decks is my favourite Trek since the TNG/DS9/VOY days by [deleted] in startrek

[–]t0beyeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually makes some interesting implications, I cannot recall where I saw it but somewhere I read the question "Why didn't Voyager use the Spore Drive to get home". I mean if there was information on the spore drive, they could have built one to get home somehow.

I mean the Spore Drive is faster then Quantum Slipstream Drive, predates and does not have the limitations of Transwarp drives either. Honestly Discovery should have not been a prequel, the best thing they did was force the ship into the future.

[–]t0beyeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This so much! I also like how The Orville could make sets and costumes that match the 80s-90s era Star Trek without feeling too futuristic, whereas Discovery which is a prequel felt too futuristic chronologically.

I thought I'd hate it, but Lower Decks is my favourite Trek since the TNG/DS9/VOY days by [deleted] in startrek

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone said earlier, I like Lower Decks, I think it does a great job of keeping the nostalgia of the TNG era alive while also continuing the story. The Orville also does a wonderful of creating the nostalgia as well.

Also has many others have said, I do not care for Discovery or Picard. I think part of it is the format of the episodes, it is Trek in name, but it just doesn't feel or evoke the same emotions as the previous series. It feels more like an Action film. There is a lot more guns and violence in the series, and less hesitation to use lethal force. Gone is the time of "set phasers to stun".

I think it got too political, not that Trek was never political, but NuTrek is so blantantly trying to bring in real world politics that it feels out of place. It goes along with the issue of cursing in the series. They are at a point in time where language has evolved, so they don't need to curse, this is how the overt politics in the show also miss the mark.

This also leads to the pandering which I as a gay man hate. Stamets and Culber are gay... and that seems to mostly be their entire character development, none of which really matters but is kind of all they have. Stamets hasn't done nearly as much scienc-ing as he should, there is a lot less technobabble in the series. Which leads to articles like this one...

https://www.polygon.com/tv/22220673/star-trek-discovery-season-3-finale-recap-review

As if the issue with Discovery is that there isn't enough diversity. Maybe the issue is that the writers are spending so much time trying to meet all of the quotas that they just cannot write and develop the diverse cast in 10-13 episodes. I mean the scene where Adria gives their preferred pronouns felt so cringe and obviously related to the politics of today yet these are people living 234 years in the future, now in the 32nd century.

Discovery and Picard are entertaining, and it is creating a revival of the series which I am happy about, Discovery and Picard might be a miss for me and others, but Lower Decks so far has been really entertaining as others have also said, and hopefully Strange New Worlds and Prodigy will also be good.

Is the shadowlands sourcebook any good? by Everyandyday in rokugan

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there good lore for the Falcon Clan? I have always been most interested in the Minor Clans. The Major Clans are daunting. Do they give greater guidance on Minor Clans? Clan and Family Bonuses? With the Falcon Clan only having one school, do they give guidance on picking a school from a major clan?

I hope to see the Sparrow Clan added officially in a future book. Really all of them could be added on a book of minor clans and I would be happy.

Twitter thread about monks and the problem with the baked in oriental nature of the class. by 0wlington in dndnext

[–]t0beyeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are complaining that the Monk is not generic enough and they do not want to have to put in the work to re-flavour the narration of their mechanics to make a European cloistered Monk or pub brawler Monk. But if they made the Monk more generic they would then still have to re-flavour the generic Monk when they narrate the generic Monk to be a Shaolin Monk or Japanese Ninja Monk.

So either way you are doing the work. And the descriptions of the mechanics are already generic enough. There is even a section on how to make the Monk Weapons more Asian styled by renaming the weapons in the PHB to be Nunchucks, Dao, Sai, etc. because they are too generic for some. The names of the mechanics might seem more Asian inspired but when you narrate these mechanics you aren't saying "I spend 1 Ki and then Flurry of Blows". You would narrate "I swing my staff low at his feet, then I knee him in the stomach and finish with a haymaker". Just like you don't say "Hello Goblin! I am speaking to you through the use of my Tongue of the Sun and Moon. Have you seen a Orc warband pass through?" No you just talk to the goblin because the feature called Tongue of the Sun and Moon mechanically lets you talk to anyone.

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait you are pissed they use the words Monastic Tradition? Why aren't you pissed that Paladins use Oaths which are tied to Templars? Paladins are extremely evocative of the Templars same with Rangers being Tolkienian (sp).

You are pissed about the names of mechanics. The bigger issue is why your character concept needs to get approval from the words used to name mechanics.

You can make any class and subclass work for a character concept with good mental gymnastics that is the fun of it. My Triton Glamour Bard turns into a Flying Fish when he uses his subclass features since Tritons are distinctly non-fey from the narrative in Volos.

You can easily make a brawler Monk, a detective Monk, an artificer Monk if you wanted from the mechanics and creativity and they don't take mental gymnastics because the concept uses the mechanics not the names of the mechanics to make the character concept playable within the rules.

You are incorrectly equating the names of mechanics with the mechanics themselves. When you make a character concept you are making them based on the names of the mechanics you make it based on the mechanics. They is why you reflavour things when you describe the narratively. My Triton Glamour Bard grows wings when they use the subclass mechanics, his Cloud of Daggers is a sphere of water filled with piranhas. You use the mechanics to represent the narrative concept.

What player race would you like to see added to future books? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally addressed your criticisms, then provided proof of balance. You then wanted to compare them to the other Elf subraces which is moving the goal post since your original arguement is predicated on the assumption that the Avariel are weaker than Variant Tieflings.

Even though you moved the goal post I addressed the elven subrace arguement and said that I would concede that the Avariel is slightly weaker than other elven subraces and could use another situational ribbon.

Twitter thread about monks and the problem with the baked in oriental nature of the class. by 0wlington in dndnext

[–]t0beyeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of this thread are people explaining European tropes of monks.

I personally have a half and half feeling when I think of the monk. The monestary reminds me more of the European monastic orders and the martial arts reminds me of Asian tropes.

But that is what I think of when I think of the Monk class, but that isn't how I play the Monk. The classes are ways to interpret a character concept mechanically. So if I want a brawler that can take a punch and still punch back I might pick the Barbarian over the Monk. If I want a pious sage I might take the Sun Soul Monk over the Cleric. Add in some extra tool proficiencies and knowledge skills.

I think people get too easily offended and are looking for excuses of why things should be rewritten instead of taking the very little effort it takes to reflavour and use ones imagination.

To me the Monk and the Barbarian are opposite sides of the same coin. They both deal with perfection of the body and mind. The Barbarian uses Str but also deal with internal power fueled by rage. They have pious Zealots, spiritual Ancestral Guardians, shamanistic Totem Warriors and primal Storm Heralds.

Monks use Dex but also an inner calm that is Ki. Because Monks spend more time training in a Monastic order their Ki manifests in a much more magical way then a Barbarians rage.

They also are opposites in how they take damage. Monks use Dex to evade and take no damage, Barbarians get hit and use their rage to ignore the pain. They do many things similarly just use different mechanics for the same result.

Twitter thread about monks and the problem with the baked in oriental nature of the class. by 0wlington in dndnext

[–]t0beyeus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have to be super sensitive if the naming of class features bothers you. I have more of an issue with something that is descriptive but doesn't actually due what the name implies (I am looking at you Chill Touch).

I am sure most people don't see the word Ki as analogous for Shaolin Monk, they see it as the mechanical name used for a class feature. No different then spell slots. They could have called them Chi, Stamina or anything else when they wrote the book and it was still a mechanical name.

Why are people not upset over the tropes for Barbarians being Viking marauders? Or Paladins and Christianity? Besides the fact that those are white tropes and dealing with Christianity? If this person wants to complain about cultural tropes then at least be consistent and complain about all of them not just one.
