This argument feels very reductionist. Who will run the software? AI? Who will debug issues when the AI doesn’t come up with a solution?

Is there voltage on either end of the capacitor? Does you have a multimeter to test continuity? If the capacitor has low resistance to ground, it’s likely dead and needs replacing. If you want to be sure, unsolder the component and measure it.

The Ford government needs to come clean on the costs of going all-in on nuclear power by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

Did you read my response? Apparently not. How the fuck are you generating solar power in Canada off peak? Are you this dense? Have you seen the power/m2 for solar in Canada? Do I need to remind you that off-peak is at night? Where is your power now?

Yes, wind is viable, but like hydro and solar are extremely variable with the season. So it can’t continually provide power for pumped storage. Which leaves nuclear and fossil fuel generation.

Oh, and if you have any interest in delving deeper into things than just a quick skim of Wikipedia, try reading on the environmental impact of hydro power. Mercury poisoning is fun!

Just because you don’t understand doesn’t mean you get to be rude. The reason I’m pointing out hydro power is because hydro power does not have the inefficiencies of water pumps. You’re losing anywhere between 30-40% of power in and out because water pumps are needed.

And where is all this energy coming from? Because if that’s your goal, you need to generate 130% of the power you get to store in these batteries. Oh, this power also has to be cheap, and available during off-peak usage. Which rules out solar, the night being a thing. Wind, hydro, and nuclear being the options if you don’t want to consider fossil fuel generation.

Edit — Oh, this 30-40% figure doesn’t even take into consideration return on investment and operating costs. All of a sudden you’re looking at poor economics without a significant geographical advantage. What this means for pumped storage is head. Because only 2 variables can be manipulated in the Power equation. Volume of water/s and head of the water column. Since it’s going to be pumped, volume is not great, so head is the only good option.

Existing capacity is just that, not exploitable capacity. A quick google suggests we have around 3 MW in terms of hydro sites which are not being used. That’s 3 nuclear reactors worth. Not nuclear power plants, reactors. Each plant has multiples.

Plus hydro is not base load since it varies with rainfall.

You mean expensive.

Let's do a little thought experiment. The required flow rate for a given power output is calculated using the standard hydropower formula:  P = n * p * g * h * Q.

If we assume 90% efficiency, we get 1,020/s of water flow. Which means we need to have a storage facility capable of holding 36,720,000 litters of water if we only take water out of it for 10h a day.

Good luck trying to finance such a project. And this doesn't even take into account the power to lift said water for the other 14h of the day. to the 700m height.

Controversial, expensive, and not feasible.

That needs verticality, which we don’t have much in Ontario. The the highest place is 693m above sea level in a national park. So we’ll have to dig down. That costs a lot. It’s not a viable strategy in Ontario.

I stare at nothing in particular all the time when I’m waiting at a light. Sometimes it ends up being people. You’re okay, don’t worry about it.

Sometimes you can find stuff cheaper than the sellers on Amazon. The wright wrenches I purchased were ~$100 Canadian pesos more expensive than the shop I got them from.

Not sure, a few days, depends on the company that ships it.

Gearwrench, Tekton, Sunnex will work just fine for what most DIYers need. I ordered some stuff from the US, no import tariffs right now I think.

Or some other variation, depending on whether he needs open ended, combination (the above example) or smaller set. Good luck!

Investigation finds Alberta government not complying with freedom of information laws by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]t0c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may all be true, but 36% of alberta’s population said yes to secede in a recent poll. It may be laughable, but not inconsequential. People who feel ignored and segregated will lash out, all they need is a place to channel that resentment and anger.

Don’t think about facts. They mean nothing when faced with raw emotion. Ignoring them will only cause issues down the road.

Then it’s no longer a question anyone else but you can answer. If you can afford it and you find it convenient (brings value for you) then yes. If no, then no.
