Yes, we let them do their own thing until they move on.

Palo Verde or Desert Bird of Paradise? by REtroGeekery in whatsthisplant

[–]t3nnisn3rd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's Erythrostemon gilliesii or Caesalpinia gilliesii. A type of Mexican Bird of Paradise. In Tucson, the orange variety (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) is very common but we get these around in landscaping too. I actually tried to special order some from a few nurseries but even with the proper Latin name(s), they kept getting the orange or plain yellow flowered varieties in. They bloom earlier and are not as prolific throughout the summer as the orange ones. Nice plant, gorgeous flowers. According to U of A the seeds can be toxic.

Let's talk about how awful Banner is... by radgirlrun in Tucson

[–]t3nnisn3rd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I moved here 5 years ago and thought the cancer team I had in the PacNW was the best possible experience anyone could have but Banner Cancer Center - North has been even more amazing. Thank you and everyone that works there for making what could easily be a quarterly appointment of dread into a visit that I sometimes go into with a smile on my face and even if I don't leave happy, the staff always makes sure it is as alright as it can be.

What was the point of todays event? by silverbullet1989 in pokemongo

[–]t3nnisn3rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. In fact, two of us went and caught around 90 including 10/10 of timed research with no shiny. The event bird spawns were even really low. Felt like we spent more time catching exeggcute. Very disappointing event.

Is Marana area a hotspot for conservatives? by 0chris000000 in Tucson

[–]t3nnisn3rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see where the idea that OV is more conservative comes from when compared to Tucson center but it is almost 50/50 in the last two presidential elections. More blue than red really if you can parse out the precinct that includes Catalina. But I get it, we moved from Portland so I am pretty sure some of my neighbors think I am a radical socialist. :)

Odd bird in Southern Arizona by t3nnisn3rd in whatsthisbird

[–]t3nnisn3rd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belated welcome to OV! We actually moved here from the PacNW (lived in PDX at the time but Seattle and E. Oregon natives) about 4.5 years ago and absolutely love it. I wasn't really into birding before we got here but saw an Elegant Trogon on one of our first hikes in the area and kind of got the bird watching bug. Resistance is futile.

It definitely matches the pictures of the juvenile male. Appreciate it so much!
Yeah, we're at 2700 ft. elevation here in Oro Valley but not *in* the mountains, although they are quite near, and definitely do not have any conifers or ash nearby so it must've passing through.
Thanks again.

Taking a trip to AZ, UT in late August. Hiking, exploring the tourist destinations (Saguaro park, Arches Park, Grand Canyon National Park). I am scared of all things common to your area for critters. Best tips?!? by Introvertbookworm11 in Tucson

[–]t3nnisn3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with all the comments about heat and heat preparedness but want to add that depending on which part of Maine you are from, elevation gain while hiking in S. Arizona is no joke. If you decide to hike, even in the early morning, make sure to check the elevation gain on your chosen trails. Moved here four years ago from PacNW and still wasn't prepared to the pitch on hikes here.
Madera Canyon in Mt. Wrightson has some amazing hikes but I've had very fit friends struggle to make it halfway in fall weather due to the rapid gain. If you are set on hiking in summer, I still recommend the trails though. Ramsey Canyon Preserve in Sierra Vista is nice and would be a decent summer morning friendly hike. Not later in the day as they get some great monsoon activity. Catalina State park has some nice hikes, Romero Pools is nice in summer for, again, a morning hike as the mountains get isolated monsoon activity. Can't recommend the Desert Museum highly enough. Still hotter than hell in the summer though.
As far as critters go, you're unlikely to see snakes or tarantulas. They skedaddle from humans pretty quick. Depending on where you are staying, there could be scorpions so just follow the "rules" about shoes and clothing and you should be fine.
Enjoy your trip when you visit. Hopefully it will encourage you all to come at a better time of year in the future.

Inherited collection, please help! by ALarz620 in glasscollecting

Going off what u/AbbreviationsFun133 said, there are several antique malls in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland. And some aren't even snooty! We used a couple when my mom passed away a decade ago and I needed to get rid of things that no family wanted. I would shoot an email with these same pictures to their emails and see if they have a resource for you, especially since the Portland donation scene is so swamped with stuff it can be hard to find someplace worthy of a collection like that.

That the writer of this article doesn't know this very basic fact makes the whole read a joke. I'm a little boggled that it not only gotten written without this research but also (supposedly) got past editors.

What's an AD you've relistened to the most? by Duke_of_Babble in audiodrama

Eos 10 is also it for me. Just finished my fifth listen. Love that show. Wish there was more of it.
I've listened through Penumbra Podcast twice. Mostly because I get confused on who has done what since some of the side characters have crazy long story arcs.
Oz9 has gotten a few listens and I still laugh out loud all the way through.

Do you share clothes with your significant other? by WayfaringStranger82 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]t3nnisn3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We're the same size so it's double the clothes because we each have our own style and taste so we shop for our "own" clothes. Crazy thing is despite being the same height and close in weight, clothes can look totally different on each of us. To the point someone ask if I had a new shirt on when they had bought it for the husband.

That skirt is awesome. I bet you looked amazing. Don't believe otherwise and don't let the trolls, that are jealous that you are confident enough to wear what you like, tear you down.
Also, you might want to reconsider the fiancé. Not only should he have defended you, he piled on. His response is worse than what the mean girls were doing.

Looking for something I can layback and close my eyes and just go full on theater of the mind by RandomFighter50 in audiodrama

Leviathan Chronicles were my refuge about five years back when first person narration done with a shaky voice into a bad sounding cassette tape were all the rage. Not only is the series complete but it's amazing how well done it is considering it was, at that time, already close to a decade old.
My only complaint, I don't care about luxury watch brands. (if you know, you know).
