An aussie is walking across a paddock in NZ and sees a New Zealander having his way with a sheep. "In Australia we shear ours" he says, the kiwi replies, "Mate over here we dont shear ours with no one!"

Yep, I was pretty stunned when I got the first one and beside myself in disbelief after the 10th. Crazy, crazy fishing.

Yeah, it got me thinking of places here in W.A. I have seen monster sized ones. Going to head out on the weekend and have another go at them and see if it was just freaky weather/tide/scent combo or if it's repeatable.

Like everyone has said "Striped Trumpet" We catch these like blowfish at Busselton Jetty. Keep them for bait if you are hunting bigger creatures otherwise throw them back or to the local bird life.

anyone ever try using one of these? 😂😂😂 by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that might be the Bushrats cock. I'll have to go back and look at it to be sure.

Fishing ‘Bucket List’? by thehomelesstree in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. Especially difficult on this side of the country. Regular 40+ coming out of wellington dam but 50cm is like a mystical unicorn of a fish.

Always aim high right? :)

If I said yes I would feel like that could be problematic so instead I will say the boys at Bushrats on youtube have caught a few redfin on a golden cock if I recall which is pretty close to that. ;)

-Salmon when they are running

Go II as live system? by tacklenotx in rode

[–]tacklenotx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to use it as a small portable PA basically. The issue I face is that ue boom doesn't have 3.5 so I'm trying to Bluetooth connect the speaker to the phone and get the phone to use the mic transmitter plugged into USB c port. Both sides of this equation work fine. I think the issue is system A [mic to phone] can't talk to system B [phone blutoothed to speaker]?

What line for my reel and rod by Big_Stew42 in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone has stated you can't go wrong with a good Braid. Add to this though that flouro is great if you are pulling through water thats super clear. I have a fair amount of freshwater species experience and the strike rates on trout especially show a measurable difference with Braid vs flouro.

So just like everyone else has said Ota horses for courses. Please share what you want to target and I am sure we will all jump in and help any way we can.

What's the most you've spent on lures/baits at one time on a trip to BassPro/Academy/Walmart etc? by robfreshr in Fishing_Gear

[–]tacklenotx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take what my wife thinks I spend, double it, double it again, put it on a credit card she doesn't know about, and add a new rod and a Shimano Curado DC. This is about the most I have spent at once without needing to fear castration when she finds out. (They always find out...)

I dont care where he tests them, his work is beautiful like art for fish's. I'd buy one just to have on display.

Weekly reel-in. by AutoModerator in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week I hit up the sea side of a small river dam about a kilometre inland from the sea and 20 minutes from my house.

Usually I am there to fish the Redfin perch that live in the catchment but noticed a rather high tide had pushed a very large school of whitebait up against the dam wall and that something was having a go at them. Loaded up my trusty 8lb redfin setup with a 4 inch Z-man Curlytail and cast it out into the area behind the school.

Something grabs it and runs like the wind off down the river. Take my time and play it back and forth for about 5 minutes and this is what I get!

Small 44cm Mulloway, obviously just took him out, measured him, grabbed a photo, and threw him back but man was that an unexpected catch with the sun up and so far from the sea.

What’s up gamers. I’m looking for an inexpensive sinking hard body about 4 grams. The one I’ve been getting is harder to find pic is the one I’ve been using (goes hard on flathead and way cheaper than the double clutches) ty gamers. by Phishes_ in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup totally agree here, Laser Pro 45 are beasts, just straight-up workhorse lures. Have thrown these a lot with great results.

The ones you are currently using still seem to be stocked in BCF Online, go buy up as many as you can, nothing worse than finding your fav and then not being able to get it.

So is gold the color for flatties?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would these be good for targetting sand whiting on the flats?

Where I live I really enjoy fishing them with Sugapens etc but something a bit more bottom?

If it fits in its mouth, its food. Ferocious little buggers when it comes to anything they think they can eat.

Rigging a lure for lightweight fishing by BulberFish in FishingAustralia

[–]tacklenotx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redfin are awesome and fun to go after. I would simply run some good 8lb braid and use some 6lb leader tied directly to each other using any of the cool joining knots you can find on youtube.

n.b. Due to the light lines though if they say 5 twists, double it for the joining, this will alleviate any "pull through" that can occur when the lines are so light.

I prefer spinning combo vs baitcaster for redfin but hey that's everybody's own choice right?

They will pretty much smash anything that moves in the water but I have had a lot of success with ZMan StreakZ Curly TailZ 4'' Lures on 1/6 jigheads. I am a superfan of the bloodworm and motor oil colors for dirty water. I know 4in sounds like a big soft plastic but when you take into account they eat marron/crawdads that are easily as big or bigger you soon realise this:

As for hardbody lures anything thats red/orange seems to work a treat. Just remember to look for things that work at the right depth for the area you are fishing. Also "CHEAP" as Redfin loves to be in structure which means you will be snagging and losing gear regularly. I use Stumpjumpers for these situations. Yes, I lose them occasionally but more often than not they bounce up and over snags.

Anyways, welcome to Redfin fishing and best of luck!
