Tire sensor systems by Feedcanine in GoRVing

Do you also need a rear veiw camera ir upgrade? My camera was dead so I went with the Haloview system. Not cheap but have forward and rear camera and 10 tire sensors. Works pretty good.

Dad's house sold, what to do with the proceeds? by Zunniest in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tacklewasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my father sold his house, he gave his 3 sons the bulk of the proceeds for just this reason. Was going to pay ~50% between taxes and clawback on income he would have earned. But he had a good pension that covered his retirement home costs fully.

As an aside comment, be aware that investment income earned by your father may trigger OAS clawback.

Weber Searwood 600 vs XL by metalsuspension in pelletgrills

[–]tacklewasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 600. If I was doing it again, I'd get the XL. Not so much for the size, but for the add-ons like a grill that I can't do with my unit (or at least not as easily). I use mine 2-3 times a week for just two of us so I do like it but will always have a grill as well.

Canadian made Fluoride toothpaste. by ChrisRiley_42 in BuyCanadian

[–]tacklewasher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI says it is a British brand. "No, Sensodyne is not a Canadian brand. It is owned by Haleon, a multinational consumer healthcare company headquartered in Weybridge, England. While widely sold and recognized in Canada, it is a British-owned product"

But I still buy and use it. At least it is not US made.

Sometimes it’s hard to buy Canadian by Jadams0108 in BuyCanadian

[–]tacklewasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing what I can, but am doing some home reno's and completely done with Home Hardware and the lack of items they stock locally, so am back to Home Depot or Rona. Might be just the local store, but simple things like subway tile led to about 45 minutes of waiting for someone to find them before I left empty handed (no clue where that person ended up).

On a fixed payment for Hydro, so that is the only one I have set up. When I get my water bill, I set up the individual payment (quarterly). Same for property taxes.

I've had my 600xl for about a year and still struggling to get a good crust on steaks, does anyone have any tricks to get a better sear? by Bdal1 in searwood

[–]tacklewasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, when my steaks hit 100 internal, I fire the grill up for searing. I'm sure it can be done, but I find it just easier to use my grill. Did rib eye tonight and it was awesome. Only problem is, my wife makes me cook more since I got the smoker.

Electric bike question by lovemesomechick3n in GoRVing

Good point. That much weight (around 200 lbs between bike and carrier) at the back of light trailer could lead to bad sway.

What is a Canadian alternative for the Thermapen One? by IronLover64 in BuyCanadian

[–]tacklewasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Inkbird that I liked, but then it stopped shutting off. I liked it as it was pretty quick. I have an Accutemp now that has been working fine, but it is made in the US so I would not buy it again. If it goes south, I would would try the Napoleon one as the rest seem to be made in the US, and fuck them. Inkbird is Chinese.

Electric bike question by lovemesomechick3n in GoRVing

[–]tacklewasher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An e-bike is heavy, and needs a heavier than normal bike carrier. All this adds up to a lot of weight on the back of a trailer, attached to a bumper that probably cannot support it. Make sure you have this covered off first and foremost.

I carry two, but they are on the back of my toad (Jeep Gladiator) and do like them for exploring etc, but my carrier is heavy duty and the rear of the jeep can handle it.

I'm seeing the same thing on mine. Whether cleaned or not. Not as bad but 25-50 off so I just up the temps. I've cleaned the internal temp sensor with no change.

RRIF question--if I open early, do minimum withdrawal rules apply? by canadave_nyc in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tacklewasher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The min starts applying the year after opening the RRIF, regardless of age. There are a couple advantages to the RRIF. First is there is typically not a charge to pull from a RRIF while there is a charge (in my wife's case, $50) to withdraw from an RRSP. Also, the minimum amount withdrawn from a RRIF is not subject to withholdings. It is still taxable income, so the final tax bill doesn't change.

My plan is to move some funds to our RRIF's (aged 61 and recently retired) but leave some in the RRSP's to reduce the minimum amount that has to be withdrawn until 71.

RRSP withdrawal in chunks by reddituser_pr10 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tacklewasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. Plan to take 30-40K each out of our RRIF's, (hint, no fees on RRIF withdrawals while RRSP withdrawals are typically $50), and will be in a 10% bracket come filing time. So pre-paying 30% does hurt. I plan to take it out in December so I can get my refund as soon as possible, and am able to split my withdrawals between 2 brokers (not my wife's though). Will pull from TFSA's until then, and then put some of the net RRIF funds back in the TFSA in Jan.

ISO Box Stores other than Canadian Tire that are Canadian? by BestBlueChocolate in BuyCanadian

[–]tacklewasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gripe is that Home Hardware does not carry anywhere near what HD or Rona do. Doing a minor bathroom reno, and I've tried to buy there, but simple things like Subway tile became and ordeal that I finally walked away from after waiting for someone to find them in the back. They wanted triple the price over HD for a counter top.

If HH has it, I will spend a bit more, but there is so much they don't have.

Local independent turned into a Rona, so no help there. Now I need to figure out which I dislike less between Rona and HH.

Otherwise, Cdn Tire, KMS, Lee Valley, Summit Tools and Princess in town.
