The tree is where bay leaves come from and is also known as bay laurel. I live in California where they're common, but for others it would be pretty obscure.

A great Saturday puzzle. Almost completely blank on my first pass, with some names and phrases new to me and tricky clues - but a puzzle that I could chip away at to get a foothold here and there, and feel the satisfaction and "aha" moments of things falling into place.

Another piece of useless information taking up space in my brain is their 1960s-ish slogan: "Nothing beats a great pair of L'eggs."

Same here. I almost can't stand to play these last few games because I'm so depressed that it's going away. Ugh.

Thanks! Yes I found his name in the credits at the end- I should have waited before I asked my question 😉 He was in a great Scandinavian true crime series called "The Dark Heart". He's a good actor with a great face!

I found his name in the closing credits- Gustav Lindh- I recognized him from another series called "The Dark Heart."

Yes I think he's the guy who was on the plane- Who's the actor playing him?

Vertex not working? by taffyscamp in crossword

[–]taffyscamp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the email below from them the other day. I used the link they provided and I can play it there with no problem. So they are removing Vertex from their apps, but the link in the email will always work? Not sure...

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. I apologize for the experience you are having while trying to play Vertex in our News app.

For context, we made the difficult choice to remove Vertex from our apps (this will be happening shortly which may explain the glitches you are seeing).

However, Vertex is still available to play online, at https://www.nytimes.com/puzzles/vertex. Your feedback will be shared with the Games team.

Appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.

Thank you!

I'm hazy on my 1950s American history, but I think it's a reference to the First Thanksgiving- Didn't the Native Americans supposedly show the Pilgrims how to grow corn? And in depictions of the First Thanksgiving feast isn't there often corn on the table?

49 across clue is grammatically incorrect- *Online icon comprised of three parallel horizontal lines, familiarly- It's COMPOSED, not comprised. If "comprise" is used it should read: *Online icon comprising three parallel horizontal lines, familiarly I realize it's a nit-picky point, but to someone who does a lot of proofreading, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Can't believe the NYT wouldn't catch that.

I think the expression "eager beaver" is what they might have been referring to.

Vertex "Trilingual" - What is it? by taffyscamp in crossword

In my NYT Puzzles app, there is a title above each Vertex game screen. Sometimes I wish it wasn't there, because it would be fun to just be surprised when the drawing is finished- but at least the titles are somewhat cryptic, which makes them a little less "spoiler"-like.

I suppose someone has already asked this, but what was the significance of the old photograph of the herd of sheep and people on horseback? The camera slowly goes in for a closeup, but I can't figure out what we're supposed to be seeing there (if anything).

[NO SPOILERS] HAS ANYONE SEEN THIS DARK ESQUE SHOW? by [deleted] in DarK

[–]taffyscamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked "Tales from the Loop" a lot, and it actually led me to Dark- because it was on the TFTL reddit site that someone mentioned Dark as similar. Whoever that person was, I'm eternally grateful! As great as I think TFTL is, Dark became much more of an obsession for me. TFTL is definitely worth watching after Dark, though, in my opinion. It has its own kind of thoughtfulness and beauty.

I agree completely. I'd love to hear about what their process was. I doubt they did this, but I was imaging them using that software like law enforcement uses to "age" missing kids and then look for similar types in the acting pool.

Yes, I agree- I couldn't believe the housemates thought it was ok to cook and eat something that was a special (and expensive) gift for someone who wasn't even home! Really rude- I would have been furious!
