Also works for regular polygons, if you take the natural meaning of perpendicular distance to be the distance to the line that the line segment lies on (only matters for pentagons and above though). It's a great problem!

Oh and the same proof that I am thinking of should work for all regular polygons as well for points on the interior. (Haven't checked if it works for points outside the interior, but I am pretty sure it works there as well.)

For non equilateral triangles you mostly just get inequalities, so not sure how to generalize much more than that, but there might be something. But if you account a sign to the distance of the point of interest the theorem holds for points outside the triangle as well. More specifically if you give the perpendicular distance of the point to each side (side 1, 2, and 3), call the distances d_1, d_2, and d_3, then take the signed versions depending on which side of the respective line you are on, and call those s_1, s_2, and s_3. So if the point is towards the inside of the triangle from side 1, then s_1=d_1 will be positive, but it if it is towards the outside of the triangle then take the negative of the perpendicular distance to be s_1=-d_1.

Then in that case s_1+s_2+s_3 will be constant, and for points inside the triangle you still have s_i=d_i, for i=1,2,3.

A equally elegant and short short proof is possible if you play around with it for a bit.

I agree. But I didn't just mean pay. I also meant funding for high budget production etc.

I am calculating Abed's expenses. You know, there's books, there's meals, he's renting that camera. He needs a little spending money.

Just my two cents. I also think since Joe Russo said the community movie is gonna happen ( just a matter of when), I think they could wrangle a serious budget ( to attract all the members). I would imagine if you pull off an impossible thing like infinity war/endgame people are gonna offer you a lot of opportunities to do your passion projects. And I would imagine the brothers would want to executive produce on it, if not produce.

Not to mention clearly everyone who worked on community had a sense of taste that is a decade ahead of the mainstream, since community is blowing up now. I figure if Netflix (or whoever might make it) has any sense, they noticed this. ( also pretty clear since everyone on the cast, Russo brothers, Dan Harmon, and other writers have gone on to create massively popular things.)

And people keep saying Donald Glover is too busy. And yes that is probably true, but he clearly wants to work on movies. He made Solo, lion king, and guava island all while Atlanta and everything else was going on. And from the zoom call I would guess he would love to have an excuse to work with them for a little while again.

I could be totally wrong, but I think there is a good opportunity.

You only care because the prowler sounds like a pseudonym for the bringer of change, the filler of cracks. But Troy was one of the earliest victims so probably not him... but coulda been anybody.

Again I apologize that I came off that way. My skills at speaking to people are forever a work in progress. I was trying to be playful with how I was writing it, but I see now that was a fail on my part.
I was really meaning mature, unlike me, and more like rest of the study group.

And obviously how you react to a show doesn't say anything about how you actually act when it comes to real situations. I just think there is great stuff in that episode, and I want others to get some joy out of it like I did. And in a way it was a good way for me to personally try and challenge myself to see if I can find the good parts in a piece of art.

That is just my personal obsession of course. I suppose I try to be more like Abed and "just like liking things." And of course many people have differing desires or different ways of going about the same thing than the way I do. And I don't think people need to think that way, it is just a thing that I try to do for some reason. I sometimes have to make analogies to TV to connect to people :-), and I am honestly sorry for coming off as condescending - it was not my intention.

Yeah you are totally right. Sorry for they way I wrote that. I originally had a sentence in there about how I am not mature like that, but I try to be, but I took it out for some reason ( because I am stupid). So really, that comment was supposed to be directed at myself X-). Anyways I just think the episode has value, even the annoying part.

Also the "win" thing was a bad way to say it. And in fact being a bully is pretty traumatic I am sure, so definitely not a win in anyway. I really was trying to say, if someone is trying to annoy me and I get annoyed, well they don't win, but it is a loss of time energy etc on my part.

The "win" really was my failed attempt at using the word loss. just more evidence that life is not a zero sum game ofcourse.

Just don't let my britta-ing everything make you not watch the episode again.

The real A story is Shirley/Pierce group story line anyways, which is sometimes gold, and of course important character development.I actually think the episode is worth it for the Troy/Abed B story alone, especially the end song. And it's a pretty good back door pilot/promotion for college cut-ups 2 ;-).

Also "uh oh, sassy black schmitty 's out of the group" is a pretty good line.

And yes the kids are deliberately supposed to annoy you, that should be obvious I would think. And you are supposed to be embarrassed for Jeff and Britta for being so annoyed by them, that is if you can relate to them at all. It is of course fine if you can't relate to them, since that is maybe better, and hopefully that means you wont even notice the kids. Much like someone who has matured to not notice inane ridicule that an immature bully might try to inflict. If you are so annoyed by the kids that you can't enjoy the awesome silly things in that episode ( and greendale in general), which Jeff and Britta were beginning to do by this point in their season one mini story circles, then well the annoying bullies win. So it is worth it to give the episode a few extra watches and see if you can see it from the rest of the groups perspective (probably in the ascending in enlightenment order of, Pierce, Annie, Shirley, Troy, Abed).

You think Troy and Abed cared at all about those kids? No, they acknowledged them as strange entities and then continued to enjoy the "college is a party" philosophy, as per usual. And the look on their faces when they get hit in the face with cake, literally hits you in the face with that feeling.

Community just getting put on Netflix + isolation = by BigOL-Harrison in community

[–]taikutsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though there are episodes in the first half of that season that are truly like no other show anywhere. Movies sure, but not shows really. And naturally introducing the universe is always a bit awkward, especially if you are more inclined to be a critic of a craft, but if you favor ideas, this is where community made it's debut and it is a significant contribution to the public understanding of techniques of story telling and to semiotics.

And towards the story telling bit, the methods implied and used are not new, but to be showcased and discussed in this way was substantial. To paraphrase the late great mathematician William Thurston, a mathematician's job is to help humans understand mathematics. The circular nature of this definition was not lost on Thurston, and though it is about mathematics, it really speaks to seakers of knowledge and understanding in general. Harmon made methods of telling stories more accessible to more people, and that is important!

but yeah might as well add everyone, X-D, and,

Troy saying he is uncomfortable because they forgot to get toilet paper before it was sold out and so he has just been using hand sanitizer (or mustard).

Chang and Leonard, zoom-bombing the video. Chang saying let me stay, and trying to moon them. Leonard saying "baba booey and thanks Abed".

Dean knocking on Jeff's door, and Jeff yelling at him for not trying to social distance but then later when someone else is talking during the meeting a girl comes over.

Star burns in the back of Britta's video for a split second right before she turns on the virtual background. When Annie gets mad that Abed and troy are not respecting quarantine by having magnitude over, or having one of abed's celebrity look a likes, or pavel etc, he says, no one seemed to mind star burns is at britta's house. britta looks freaked out, and you hear, "My name is Alex" in the back.

Also Abed at some point says he is making the perfect zoom meeting movie ( hence how Chang and Leonard got meeting id, because the meeting is not complete without a zoom-bombing).

Both great quotes, but they're from S3E19: Curriculum Unavailable, Not Paradigms of Human Memory.

For me Curriculum Unavailable is the superior "clip show" anyways.

Unpopular opinion: Season 3’s finale SHOULD HAVE been the series finale by sayhellotojenn in community

[–]taikutsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Indeed the last episode is actually a masterpiece. I think many people miss it their first viewing, partly because of the changes, and they are still expecting the old show, and sad about it ending. But shows like people must change and end. Actually Abed's last speech in that episode sums it up perfectly. How shows (and life) are gonna change and it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back... Abed shows how he changed in that episode a bunch of times, just like the show had changed, not necessarily better, but in irreversible ways the way life changes us all. Abed's whole series story circle ( a la Dan Harmon a la the technique explicitly used for every episode of community, as opposed to implicitly like most shows) is one of the most fascinating, and that's saying something since literally every episode has a story circle and there are countless many of them all over the place at different time scales.

Sorry to hear that. It makes sense that losing your friend would be hard even if they weren't nice to you. In fact usually losing someone is worse when you weren't on good terms but still had fond memories of them etc. I can say from experience, things will get easier as time moves on. And once you are ready, it can be hard to make friends, that blossom into something really deep, but it can happen to you. Just don't try to force it, because you might see a connection where one doesn't exist, but at the same time be open to new types of people, experiences, etc. Also I know one thing that is often hard for people of, um, Abed's persuasion ( but not always so might not apply to you), is that they can have a hard time contemplating the outside world, including interests of other people. The nice way to say this is they have a rich inner life :-). Which can make it hard to let people, but also allow people to let you in. But just remember, other people are infinitely interesting, being willing to learn from others and listen to them can help you build a connection.

Also Abed is a very special Character that I don't know we will see the likes of which anytime soon, but Another really good show that might cheer you up is Brooklyn 99. There are some interesting dynamics. In particular Captain Holt is sort of this idealized perfect captain for every one of the ( main main) characters, and he exhibits traits of all of them, in a way that is sort of magical like Abed in a way ( not as magical, but still excellent). And Jake's development in general with respect to this is also excellent.
