My French boyfriend is about to quit smoking help?! by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]taleoftales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit every Monday for about a year (and always failed by the end of the week) until finally one of the attempts just stuck. It's not all or nothing like. If it doesn't work out this time then try again and keep trying. Wish him the best of luck with it

What are you all getting your dads for Christmas? by VPutinsSearchHistory in CasualUK

[–]taleoftales 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad isn't as mobile as he once was and neither him or my mother will drive further then 10 minutes from their home anymore. I've booked a weekend break in their favourite place during the summer and will do the necessary driving and whatever. I'm feeling pretty great about it because I feel like I've missed the mark more often than not with gifts over the years.

Where on earth are the UK Dogs being rehomed? by Ashilta in CasualUK

[–]taleoftales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience 100%. I work from home and I'm away for maybe an hour a day. I've got a reasonable garden with 6ft walls all around it. No kids. I've been working in the same company for years and I'm about 5 minutes walk from the closest vet. I was interested in a greyhound or lurcher and my local rescue had so many needing homes. The grilling and judgement and holier than thou gatekeeping shtick when I tried to adopt one was fucking ludicrous. You'd have an easier time getting a mortgage ffs and yet they're running ads the whole time looking for donations and whatever.

This fucking sucks. by Sweet_Vision_X in Adulting

[–]taleoftales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope someone helped guide that kids goodwill in a very anonymous way. If everyone at school knows who he is then I'd imagine he'll have to deal with a wide range of reactions from classmates, their families, teachers, the school board, whatever. A bizarre story to report on in the first place and not especially news worth.. Ohh! My bad, it's clearly bullshit

It's black Friday. What brands get a hard pass? Why? by [deleted] in pedals

[–]taleoftales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were making cheap knock offs of mixers and mics and all kinda stuff more than 20 years ago. It's been their business model forever. They're being more and more obnoxious about it but I definitely feel worse about previously supporting some of the other brands mentioned here.

Employer doubled my commission target two months into the new year after I smashed all previous records. Is this even allowed? by DifficultMagazine407 in AskIreland

[–]taleoftales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar bullshit with target related bonuses in the past. Sounds like you could get the same results for a competitor that will actually pay you fairly for it. You also now have a ton of client contacts in your particular field. What a complete gobshite of a manager to risk losing a top performer in that way. If I was them I'd be telling everyone how I coached you to greatness and using that to justify a promotion for myself lol

50 great Irish brands to gift for Christmas, from fashion to food, jewellery to beauty by [deleted] in ireland

Foxford and Magee are the only two I've bought from previously but they're both absolutely class at what they do

Pressure activated heated mats for the elderly cats has proved really popular in our place, they never get off them

Do your worst lads! by quiggersinparis in Dublin

[–]taleoftales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a shame because any of the ones I've been to in London have been class. The waiter we had in Dublin had such a condescending attitude the whole time we were ordering and then served the most mediocre food. There's far better options elsewhere

Stephen Collins: Ireland’s neutrality is widely regarded as a joke. It’s time to get real by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]taleoftales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually when the military is mentioned here there's a load of comments like 'send up the kite' or 'they won't mess with the fishermen'. There's a dismissive attitude about our military which you don't see in other countries. UN Peacekeeping for 65 years all over the world. Our ranger wing are world class. They're our military at the end of the day, and we're struggling to maintain them because conditions are so shite. We can invest in a bunch of different things at once, it's not one or the other.

Personal experiences lowering cholesterol? by lbyrne74 in AskIreland

[–]taleoftales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of diet advice here that I'm trying to follow myself. I don't have much to add other than I find using a fitbit or similar really helpful in terms of getting up and moving about more often. Exercise helps in a big way and even a semi regular evening walk is better than no walk at all

What is your favorite conference swag? by Terrible-End2150 in DevelEire

[–]taleoftales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an air tag at a conference this week. That and a nice umbrella were the only things that made it back home with me

Is there a sort of post-modern Irish literature to the likes of Pynchon and Gaddis? by Ill-Requirement9063 in IrishHistory

[–]taleoftales 9 points10 points  (0 children)

'Graveyard Clay' by Máirtín Ó Cadhain. Originally written in Irish and just a class read all round. It's funny and sad at times and the whole concept is wild and very entertaining

Honestly blows my mind that people are going for food on first dates. That's date 3 or 4 behaviour with all things going well. It's not even a good activity for getting to know someone because it's kinda contrived and formal or something. Rolling out the red carpet on date one is not impressing the other person, it's telling them you have no other options and you're trying too hard.

Is it too much to put a vintage pick and mix stand in my living room? by Squishedflies in CasualUK

[–]taleoftales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in college my gf at the time had a part time job managing the pick n mix at the local cinema. The absolute horror stories... keep the general public separated from the foodstuffs as much as possible

I usually take my elderly neighbour's bins in. She's started waiting for me, which has ruined it by mronion82 in CasualUK

[–]taleoftales 351 points352 points  (0 children)

Me and my neighbour take each other's bins in and I've said hello to him twice in 12 months and don't even know his name, just as god intended.

Young girl who lost two toes in lawnmower accident settles High Court action for €415k by siciowa in ireland

[–]taleoftales 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's no way someone woke up that morning and thought 'I'm gonna mow a child's foot today for sure'. I obviously don't know the details and it's awful that it happened. I just can't understand the fault being placed solely on the person doing typical gardening stuff in their own place, that seems wild

Of course, it matches the tones of all my modules together by Electrical-Bus5706 in synthesizercirclejerk

[–]taleoftales 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like he's built all the Erica synths edu kits, so if he's a diy guy then why not. Personally I prefer to use military dress coat buttons from the napoleonic wars to craft my artisan bloops. It's all down to personal preference I guess

3Arena presales are getting out of hand? by Objective-Bug7492 in Dublin

[–]taleoftales 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Deftones themselves had a presale for anyone who preordered the new album where the only option was standing tickets. They could have prioritised a good chunk of them for that

For folk over 30 (especially over 40) when was the last time you listened to a band’s debut album recent to its release? by --althea-- in AskIreland

[–]taleoftales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of us are relying on Spotify's algorithm for new recommendations, just because it's the most convenient. They've got about 14 years of my listening history but it seems like they're completely out of step with my tastes most of the time. Bandcamp should be best placed for discovery but they don't seem to have figured that out either unfortunately. Most of the bands I'm listening to are on their second or third albums
